Right now Im lamenting the inability of the Command and Conquer series to improve on Generals/Zero Hour. Sure, Red Alert 3 is an infintily more enjoyable game than Tiberian Wars, but it is also a step down in terms of looks and some of the features, and still simply isnt as adictive as Generals was.
I think the big problem is this: Generals wasnt really a CnC game. It was a much better game than that. They disgaurded some features of the CnC games that have been there since the start, and it made for a far more enjoyable game. But, as usual, the fanboys whinged, and cryed, and bitched and moaned. So they went very traditional with Tiberian Wars. It was aweful. Seriously, no fun what so ever. Each faction has one way to win a war, and thats it, and the add-on, horendously bad. The Nod without their air units were rubbish, so they have oen nod sub-army with no air units and shite all in the way of replacment units. Genious! That makes the Chinese Troop General in Zero Hour look like f**king Shaft!
Now, on to Red Alert 3. It's a good game. Not as good as Generals, but good. I love the fact each faction has a completly different building technique, I think that's a genious idea. Unfortunetly, it also means that the Japanese win, everybody else loses. The margin of error when on medium difficulty, be it the missions or the skirmishes, is tiny. On more than one ocasion I have been completly undone in both, and whilst at times I like a good chalenge, I think that good chalenge should come from facing *hard* enemies. If I cant even garentee a decent chance of winning at medium, how the hell am I ever gonna want to go near hard?
Mind, I have found myself thinking, on more than one occaision, that maybe all Red Alert 3 needs, to make it every bit as good as Generals/Zero Hour, is simply a better economy, becuase running out of money isnt a risk like in most CnC games, it's a cirtainty, and getting hold of extra resources, especilly if you're not the japanese, is *Very* difficult at the early stages, and even harder once the enemies have had a chance to spread.
And relax.
Boy I'm in a ranty mood today.
