Courtesy of fellow Seibertronian Mr Skram, we have a new Youtube video relevant to the recent animated Combiner Wars Machinima series - a stop-motion battle featuring Windblade, the Constructicons and Victorion by youtube user counter656, sponsored by Machinima. Perhaps most notably, it shortly contains a yet-to-be-seen clip of the actual series before the stop-motion battle starts. Check it out below and tell us what you think!

Definitely agree with this. I loved Megatron and Starscream in this last video and this Megs is definitely an awesome one as always.

Mr Skram wrote:"Combiners are going to ruin everything" several moments later "omg we have to use the enigma!!!"
I laughed heartily when she did her little taptaptap with the hammer.

This show is like some beautiful fever dream. So inconsistent and nonsensical but I can't stop watching.

Also, dunno if anyone's seen this but I just found it while bouncing around from vid to vid on Youtube.

Talk about your toys coming to life on screen, eh?

I enjoyed that. Definitely not bad. Looked good to see the toys being animated via stop motion and what not.

Even if Grimlock just has a speech impediment,
In no way can he pull that off.

Savant syndrome?

The G1 episode it happened in featured an accident where Grimlock got a ton of information and intelligence flown straight into his brain. He later created the Technobots and, to go back to his status quo, transferred the intelligence to them and Computron and went back to his usual self.

I watched it.
I get it.

It dawned on me earlier today why Megatron's personality in this show has been so entertaining. It's because he's not acting like G1 Megatron. Instead, he's acting like Cy-Kill! :KREMZEEK:

The fan-made video was ok, except for the way the characters waddled around. There was a "better" version made, with optimus fighting Maketoys Giant, but the creator replaced that version (containing the g1 cartoon music and no speaking) with an awful dubbed version (complete with muffler speech that doesn't fit the actions on screen), so I won't bother giving the url.

As for the official episode, it's still not available in Japan (and I've just given Machinima an earful as they officially claim everyone else can access it at YouTube, which is simply not true), plus those who can't have official sites (China, etc) to view it on. Machinima needs to have a disclaimer listing all the countries that AREN'T supported and/or ensure those countries are either supported at YouTube or given official outlets. In the meantime, a Google search for an online YouTube downloader/streamer will solve any problems temporarily.

Anyway, this episode was awful, as usual:

- Noone considered that CONTROLLING sentient combining beings was unethical. Not even Rodimus.
- Animation was terrible.
- The way that silly female character kept tapping her hammer on the ground, like an immature child was hilariously out of sync with the show's tone.
- The ease with which Rodimus, like every other character, is able to be killed by having his arms ripped off. They should have called the show "Hero Mashers - Our Sparks are in our Limbs".
- etc.

Guess what day it is! It's Tuesday, and that means one more installment of the new Machinima Combiner Wars Series. Spoiler Alert: It's good, again. I know, I know, two good episodes in a row? What is this? Have the pigs finally taken flight? I'm serious. I actually enjoyed this one. I really liked it. It worked with the 5 minute time slot perfectly.

But we're jumping the Ion cannon here, let's take a few steps back, start looking to the skies for aerial swine, and break the new episode down.

We open with Starscream reflecting on the death of Menasor and Computron, as the remains of both combiners have been delivered to the Council's tower from Caminus. The former decepticon feels directly responsible for the death of Computron, as he was the one who sent the combiner to take Menasor down, when he should have just done it himself. This is the kind of exposition I want. Something that challenges our previous perceptions of these familiar characters. By doing this, we subconsciously realize how different this world or continuity is, and how much those characters have changed. The Starscream we know would never mourn or regret the loss of an Autobot. This is not to say that some of the more random mood swings of other characters (ahem, Windblade) fall into the same category. Challenge our perception, but have it make sense in context.

Rodimus argues it wasn't Starscream's fault, and that he did the right thing.

Meanwhile, we see Optimus sneaking around the council's building, and Windblade is jumping from the rooftops. Megatron seems to just waltz in, which is kind of one of my favorite moments from the episode. I love the "Don't Care" attitude that Megatron has in the series. It seems he, Windblade and Optimus are all ready to mobilize. He suggests that they just go in and kill the entire concil, destroy the enigma. Windblade's on board, but Optimus naturally won't allow that to happen.

Image
You just know he's humming the Mission Impossible theme
The council watches them approach through security cameras. The Mistress is afraid they've come to finish the job and kill them all, and it seems Starscream agrees. Rodimus knows Prime wouldn't do that, but Starscream argues Megatron would. Here's one of two main problems I have with this episode (I know, I know, "Only two?" Hold on, we'll get there): Rodimus says that they "have no forces that can stand in their way". What? Why? Why does the council, the leaders of all of Cybertron and Caminus have no security force? At a time of war, no less!!! They're the leaders of multiple planets! There should be tons of guards there normally, but in a time of civil unrest, you shouldn't even be able to sneeze without a dozen guns being pointed at you.

Aaaaaanyway, they again consider using the Enigma to control all combiners, this time to stop Optimus and co. The enigma sure has a lot of different powers... I'm bugged that it's sort of becoming a Dues Ex Machina (heh, more like Dues Ex Machinima, amirite? -badumtiss-) device for the series. Got a problem? Any problem at all? Use the enigma! Next comes this week's clunkiest line, delivered by Rodimus. The combiners wouldn't stop "Prime. Nothing stops him once he's set on a course. And that's doubly true for Megatron." This line just suffers from bad writing, plain and simple. There's about 15 better ways that line could have been written, 13 of which excluding the word "Doubly", which just sounds odd anywhere, in any setting.

Image
The Council

Starscream and Rodimus want to try for a peaceful resolution first, given how they don't know if it would actually control the combiners well enough. They don't have enough time do make a decision, however, as the attackers rush the main building. The Council goes to a ledge to greet them, as Prime explains they're not here to fight, just to destroy the Enigma. The Mistress tells them no, and also gives us problem #2. It's an issue with the sound effects again, as The Mistress tries to be menacing and intimidating by smacking her staff on the ground, but the sound given is so small and quiet, the attackers probably didn't even hear it. It's laughable. It's like a toddler getting all huffy and upset, crossing their arms and saying "It's not funny!" You can't take it seriously! So, just like with the gun in Episode 2, the sound effects fail again.

Image
KNOW YOUR PLACE, CITY SPEAKER! *tink* *tink*

Megatron tries to pander to Starscream, but doesn't do a very good job of it, telling him he's too stupid to handle the power of the enigma. Starscream accuses Megatron of only helping because he wants the Enigma for himself. Megatron jumps and takes a shot at Starscream. The council runs inside, and Optimus, Windblade, and Megs start taking out the castle's defense cannons. Windblade gets a creepy, ominous warning from a disembodied voice. "Don't let this happen" it says. Who is this? We don't know, but it'll be interesting to find out.

Image
Use the Force, Luke

Starscream survives the shot from Megatron, and is concerned about the attackers. Rodimus says no one is going to die, but then it's revealed the constructions have made their way to Cybertron, too. They combine to form Devastator and break through the Council room's floor, taking Rodimus with them, tearing his arm off triumphantly.

This moment actually made me gasp. It was so unexpected, and with a character I absolutely didn't expect to die, that it actually evoked some emotion. For once this series achieved not only a satisfying cliffhanger, but it achieved a near-perfect mix of talk and action for it's 5 minute run-time. The characters were good, the writing was a lot better than what we've seen in the past, and the animation seemed to be more accurate and smoother than normal. It had a great, unexpected twist, and it actually has me looking forward to the next episode for once. This is by far the best episode yet, and the template I hope they follow to a T for the rest of the series. I can really sum it up in three words: I enjoyed it. The previous episodes haven't really been "Enjoyable" per se, and I'm not the first person to point that out by any means, but this one was. They struck such a good mixture of all the good things from past episodes, and got rid of almost all the bad things. I wish it had been this good from day one. I think we all would have enjoyed it a lot more.

Even without dieing, and taking into account the strength of Devvy, it seemed that Roddy, line everyone in this show, is built like a Hero Masher.

I freaked the hell out. Granted the five minute format doesn't allow for as much of an impact as say the Transformers 1986 Movie. But when Hot Rod - my favorite Autobot behind Optimus and Bumblebee - got taken down, my jaw dropped.

Do you think it was Primus that disabled the turrets and said, "Don't let this happen." or someone else? I doubt it was Devastator.

Over the last few weeks, Machinima's Combiner Wars series has been uploaded to the relatively new Go90 service for US viewers, while non-US viewers got the episodes on Youtube a few hours later. However, if any US viewers are having problems with Go90; it seems Machinima planned all along to later release the episodes on Youtube for US viewers anyway! Embedded below is a 10-minute episode that combines Episodes 1 and 2, available for US viewers but not for European or Canadian viewers who already got the episodes through youtube. Have a watch below and tell us if the two flow well into each other!

It's also worth noting that the Youtube videos released weekly for non-US viewers still didn't work for some areas outside the US. So far we have been able to ascertain that this new link works for US viewers and not for Europe, Canada or Asia; but feel free to confirm what other countries this new video may or may not work for!

Pretty sure she doesn't have one. She is based on an IDW design. They really don't care much about transforming in their "Transformers" comics.

As for episode 1&2..yeah...this isn't really going to work well edited together either, unless they make some additional edits. At least 2003's Clone Wars & GI:Joe Resolute, when brought together into long format made appropriate edits so it felt like you were watching a single story.

With this you get...close up of Cybertron...Optimus Prime's Face...fade out...zoom into Cybertron again...

After Windblade entered the Spacebridge, and the hyperspace sequence...if they went straight to episode 2 it would have felt much more natural.

Also after watching this again...I have a few more gripes...Menasor was literally waist-deep in a building when Windblade cut off "Offroad". How did she even attack the leg? --and after she did, how was Menasor Standing...if he was hobbling/struggling to stand or lean on something I get that, but he appeared to be standing just fine...Also now that we have seen episode 5...how did the bodies of Menasor & Computron get back to Cybertron? Who put Menasor back together? Why put him back together if he is dead?

Mistress of Flame is more like the odd one out in terms of IDW's Transformers designs. When you've got exclusive characters like Nautica, Aileron and Swift running about who very clearly have as much vehicle mode kibble as anyone else...

Hell, a lot of designs such as Stormbringer Astrotrain and Stealth Bomber Megatron are designed with a transformation scheme in mind. They've even gone as far as designing a character as a retool of a toy, and in MTMTE a lot of plot points and concepts - Rung, Red Rust, Rigor Morphis - so I don't really see how they don't care about transformation when if anything, IDW is the one fiction that actually utilises Transformation more than any other.
... which if anything, makes the Mistress of Flame an even stranger case. Maybe she's an Action Master.

I don't consider any version of Megatron or Astrotrain original, because they are based on already existing characters, so obviously they should be designed with alt modes. I guess its just me...But I don't see how ANY IDW original characters (Rung, Aileron, The DJD etc...) could have alt modes.

1. I think there has been more transformations in 5 episodes of CW than in the pages of the last 4 years of IDW.

2. Funny you mention that about Mistress...because I often refer to the IDW comics as "Action Masters" ;)

Rung's alt mode is intentionally vague and mysterious; no-one's supposed to know what it is both in-universe and out-of-universe.

(It's the hologram Nightbeat is looking at)

Aileron I don't see how you can't see her having an alt mode because literally all the kibble is right there...

Vos (the gun Megatron's holding)

Again, I... I really don't get it. All the kibble's there, transformation is used as a plot point, as a way to build mystery and intrigue; while other series use transformation as... just a thing they can do and that's it. Sorry if it sounds like I'm singling you out; but I've heard IDW described by quite a few people as the one series to not use transformation when it's the one series to really actually take advantage of transformation.

No I totally respect your point of view. I purchase all the comics, but am not really a fan, just trying to support the brand. I read them once, then board/bag them, and honestly, don't remember much about them. All Hail Megatron was, in my opinion, the last good story from IDW, again that's just me. Because the designs of many characters are beyond my ability to recognize, I am instantly disconnected. I get that it is popular, its just not "for me"

Good to know I'm not alone, but really, those transformations are so obscure, how would anyone besides the most hardcore of fans figure that out? You could open my own copy of the comic, show me the pic, ask who it's supposed to be/what its supposed to be, and I'd be ... :???:

I understand that different interpretations of different characters across all media is fair, but one of the problems I have with many comics (not just Transformers) is how far can you deviate before the character is no longer that character? For some, they welcome IDW (especially MTMTE/TLL) with open arms, for some like me, it is just too much of a deviation from the "norm" it no longer is fun/interesting to me.

I do agree with this, generally. It's the reason - well, it's one of the many reasons - why I'm not a great fan of Bayformers. Movie Ratchet, for instance, has absolutely nothing in common with his original design aside from turning into an ambulance so unless you actually say he's Ratchet, you're not gonna work out he's supposed to be a new version of the medic from the G1 cartoons and comics. His designs in Animated, TFP and IDW all make sense to me; they're heavy deviations to be sure, but those deviations fit what sort of character he's supposed to be while still not deviating too far to the point he's completely unrecognisable. At least in my opinion anywho.
But yeah, it just makes sense to me. If you're gonna make a new version of a character, make sure they're still recognisable as that character. A lot of people don't seem to realise there's a very happy medium between 'exactly the same' and 'different in every single possible way'.

... so to bring this back on-topic since we went way off the rails there, I'm glad that the designs in this are instantly recognisable as new versions of their G1 counterparts (Computron's face aside). I mean, sure, that's mostly because they're based on their toys but... uh... I-I'm trying okay :-(

Sure thing. If I was a fan that had stepped away for 20+ years, then saw this CW series, I could honestly say I would recognize all the characters in CW except Windblade (not knowing she was *fan made*), Maxima, (not knowing she was new for the series), and The Mistress of Flame (not knowing she was from IDW comics) . Of course I'd probably have a dozen or so questions about what the overall story was...But I think some of us that are current on all fiction still have those questions ;) .

I can confirm that it's blocked in Japan.

Thanks for mentioning where this video is available, Seibertron. As far as I know, this site is the ONLY news site that has taken the time to report this. Even the official Machinima description/site does not clearly state where these videos can be watched globally, which in this globalised, digital, online age, is puzzling. Big cheers to Seibertron for posting this info!

Okay, watching this compiled version of episodes 1 and 2 has proved a few things.

First, for all the framerate complaints from before, watching this YouTube version reveals that the framerate issues aren't so much the fault of the cartoon itself, but more with the quality of the video on Go90's player, as the framerate for the animation of the robots looks a LOT better in this YouTube version. Granted, it's still very flawed in places, especially during Starscream's flying/falling back to the Council chamber in episode 2, but as bad as it is, it's not nearly as awful in this version as it was on Go90.

Second, not only does this show not work well as a mini-series of 5-minute episodes, but neither does it work when compiled together. The second episode feels like some time has passed between it and episode 1, yet watching them back-to-back here feels like almost no time has passed between the two episodes, making the Council's learning of the Menasor vs. Computron fight on Caminus, and Windblade's arrival on Cybertron, happen way too quickly. Because of this feeling of immediacy, the Council speaks of the fight as though it had happened much earlier than we saw it happen in relation to when they convene to discuss it, and Windblade seems to show up on Cybertron practically instantaneously. If there had been some sort of transitional wipe or fade to show a passage of time between the two episodes, that could have helped greatly. But as is, the flow of time (or lack thereof) comes off as being more confusing than ever.

Not even that. It just needed to quickly fade in a "1 week later..." or something like that at the bottom of the screen.

I'm sure, when this sad sorry mess of a series is over, some fans will make a complied version, complete with wipes, transitions, redubbed voices for Menasor, etc. Multiple fans will post and repost it, with subtitles (in Japanese, etc), thus thwarting any attempts to geo-block it. It'll still be crap, but less so, and still better than what Machinima clips come up with.

I think you guys are being a bit too harsh on it. I just saw the series so far earlier today, and it wasn't as bad as you guys are making it out to be. Sure it has a few things that could be better, and yes Menasor's voice is a bit off from how it usually is, but it still is pretty cool. My biggest issue with it so far however is how Windblade's personality is. In IDW, she was a naive and cute character, whereas in this cartoon, she's just a bit too much like IDW Arcee. Why do Transformers fictions keep turning nice characters into mean ones??? :-(

Because niceness is for BABIES! Real ADULT stuff is gritty, harsh, cold, and serious business! The stuff of MANHOOD doesn't need no sissy niceness!

You just described half of a Michael Bay Transformers movie. The other half is made up of either sexism or sissys. :-P

Well, considering how much emphasis the creators of this show put on making it bad-A-double-S above all else, it's not that far from movies' mentality. ;)

Whit Hertford. He's been in a few other things, recently the voice of Jay Smouse on Adventures in Odyssey (on which Houser had also been several voice roles in years past, most prominently Jellyfish during the Blackgaard Saga and Ben Shepherd both during and after the era of the Novacom Saga).
