Close. It actually references Wilk and Son Towing on the original toy:

Yeah, I don't think this thing will go long without some 3rd party figuring out that they can sell a simple tow crane add on for this thing and make a fast buck. Somebody will get around to it (if not, there's always Shapeways).

It's a magic invisible crane!
Magic and invisible like FunPub's business ethics.

A little parts swapping with Swerve (which would be a pain because he has a TON of pins) and you'd have a passable Trailbreaker.

You're preaching to the choir here :
Bowspearer wrote:The other thing is that Kup ideally isn't the best mould choice here. Honestly, as much as i detest movie toys, I was honestly expecting them to draw on the Longarm mould if they did go this way for both Hoist and Hubcap as it is an actual tow truck. Hopefully the other reveals are better fits.

Should blend nicely, although it's not perfect.

I still say this deco is meant to stand in as Trailbreaker until they get around to a real one.
Thats just coincidence. Maybe they did go with Hoist out o the 12 Machine Wars toys because of that similarity but really, its just the 1997 MW Hoist colors on the Kup mold.
The other thing is that Kup ideally isn't the best mould choice here.
Its the best mold they can use out of the ones they have available to them.
I know they don't go with new molds, but seriously, would sculpting a new weapon that turned into an appropriately sized tow hook REALLY have killed them? Epic fail.
It wouldn't have killed them but the costs for making such a thing would have been passed onto the customer. Such a thing would be quite expensive solely because its produced in limited numbers. So thats why they don't do it.

Longarm is based on an on-screen movie vehicle which is off limits for the Club. Also, ALL 2007 movie molds, on screen or not are off limits to the club.
And people would rather see recent molds used than six year old molds.

Wilkinson. You may have heard of that
And for people moaning about him being a pickup, I bring you: G2 Laser Rod Electro. A few pages back we already determined that the head shares features with both Hoist and him, which means the head will do double duty.

Anyway, they always start off with someone less shockingly awesome for the start of the reveal. From here, should get interesting.

Yea I know all the what they can and can't use, I was just saying it would make more sense. Repainting an obvious big rig tow truck into a some sort of pickup with "towing" on the side of it makes absolutley no sense.
Totally disagree about the old molds.

I think Longarm is licensed as well. According to the wiki, he's a Ford F-350; therefore he'd be off-limits to TFCC.

The back of the card still identifies him as a regular "truck", no licensing information anywhere, in contrast to for instance Starscream's "F-22 Raptor". Plus, Ford is not a part of GM who Hasbro struck a deal with for the movies.
In short, unlicensed therefore free to use, were it not for the cameo... Think anybody could ask that at one of the panels?

Given, I agree there may be a few "b@stard stepchild" molds of each that might be able to squeeze under the radar... but not many.
That said, I think the really exciting thing about this mold is its potential to be repainted as the Laser Rod bot in gold. That would be SPOT ON. I'm actually more excited about the add-on repaints that could come out of the Machine Wars theme... to match the previous G2, RID, Action Master and/or SG bots.
From just a couple molds, we could see a load of possibilities...
(from MW Prowl / Mirage)
Red Diaclone or SG Mirage
Green G2 Mirage (which would admittedly be hideous)
RID Skid-Z (would be amazing)
(from MW Hoist / Hubcap)
Laser Rod G2 Electro (great idea)
RID Wrecker Hook
Orion Pax (ala the eHobby Orion Pax/Dion set) (yegads, would be amazing)
Hmmm. You could totally display Classics Hardhead as Mega-Octane with a grouping of redux RID bots. (Scourge, Skybyte, Side Burn...) Retcon that quick TFCC.
I hope they keep fleshing out the earlier sets like they have. Those have been some of my favorite figures each year.

If that's the route they take, then it's a pretty weak way for them to squirm their way out of getting a crane hook/gun accessory moulded to make the mould work as a tow truck.

But a bad looking bot mode. RotF Dirge is the better choice here IMO. Just think of him as Classics with a lot of (unnecessary) detail.
And it looks like El Duque needs more coffee, as it's Skywarp, not Dirge.

I'm sorry Hope you'll make it out there alive.
I have RotF Dirge and Gen. Sergeant Kup right here next to eachother, and Dirge is short! I don't think he's the worst jet mold out there, mind you. Makes me wonder who they'll pick for Megatron/Megaplex.
O, Thundercracker as Freebee

With 2 figures out now, what I thought would happen might be. The "Machine Wars" having Movie style robots versus "Classics" style.
I'm quickly becoming less impressed with this set.
However, per the Botcon and TFCC Twitter feed, they said this one may not impress. Look for the 3 - 5 molds.
So they say.
Posted by dedcat on February 8th, 2013 @ 3:35pm CST
I remember this being one of the more enjoyable movie molds play-wise, so I'm not terribly upset.
I would have liked some retooling to make it a bit less 'movie-esque.' At the very least, some normal hands.
I'm holding out hope that Thundercracker gets his own unique mold, even though the original was a Skywarp repaint.
Overall, it is a good looking toy and I really dig the head sculpt. But please, no more retooled movie as classics figures. (Especially Breakaway!)

I don't hate it but it does nothing at all for me. Thing was, I thought movie molds might make for interesting MW figures.
It isn't a bad figure but it is by no means a "good" toy either.
