An in-hand image of the Japan exclusive Dark Steel figure has surfaced via eBay. The figure pays homage to Beast Wars Quickstrike, and uses DOTM Deluxe Sideswipe as a base with a retooled head and retooled weapons from DOTM Deluxe Starscream. This figure will be released in Japan as a Bic Camera store exclusive, luckily a version will also be available domestically later this year as part of the DOTM line. Check out the image mirrored below.

It's mostly in the colors, the retooled head and the blades looking like snake fangs.

On a related note, is this mold any good?

I really like this figure. The colors are awesome and the weapons actually look good (I get the reference to the weapons looking like snake fangs). I really wanted an excuse to pick up Sideswipe's convertible mold, and this is the perfect reason to get it. Bought on sight.

And I said "proposed", both versions are called "Dark Steel", except Hasbro's is one word: "Darksteel"
I still say the blades look like snake fangs.

That's a pretty weak connection; hardly an "homage".

Just dug through some SDCC images, Hasbro had him labeled as Dark Steel in their slide show as well. Whatever he ends up being called he's on my must have list.

are you really supposed to pronounce it AN HOMAGE? Iv'e always had issues with that...
Anyway, Giant snakescorpion thingy doesnt translate well into modern day stealth disguises, but a corvette stingray on the otherhand, I mean, come on, they could have givin him torpedo blasters and a blue and yellow paint job and spun off the name "Depthcharge" and since he's a "Stingray" and has "wings" he could have had less backlash then this...
custom idea. credit to me.

Yup, and should be the same toy. The same thing was done with RotF Deluxe Dead End and Stalker Scorponok: general retail in the US, but exclusive in Japan.

That's always how I've pronounced it. It feels so wrong saying the H.

Maybe they should've remolded movie Scorpinok into the homage.

I, for one, really like this. Very cool, IMO. And there is a SERIOUS lack of deluxe-sized Decepticons in the DOTM line, so having another cool-looking 'Con in the line is a great idea, in my opinion.
I'm actually gonna try to get 2. One to be Quickstrike, and one to put a new head on and call Motorhead. Yeah, the colors are basically opposite for Darksteel and G1 Motorhead, but it is close enough for me. ANYTHING to beef up the Decepticon ranks! lol

This figure will also see a domestic general release in DOTM Deluxe wave 5 with Air Raid and Armor Topspin.

i thought thats how everyone said it, it is a French loan word after all.
what do you say? home-age?
on closer inspection, the face looks a bit derpy. kind of kills the rest of its sinister attitude with the Owen Wilson nose

The image shows Dark Steel (the Hasbro version) along with the new plane TF:

Certainly not worth buying a whole case over, but they list its availability as November, so at least we know when to start looking for them .
Posted by Jelze Bunnycat on August 27th, 2011 @ 12:29pm CDT
So November huh? Great, just in time before my State-side visit ends. And two different kinds of Bumblebees in the same case?! Hasbro, wake up, this is overkill!
