A news item has appeared on the website of The Science Daily, that claims that the premise of Quantum Computers is no longer the stuff of Science Fiction, but could soon become the stuff of Science Fact. Prem Kumar, the AT&T Professor of Information Technology in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and the director of the Center for Photonic Communication and Computing, and his research group are one step closer to realizing that technology. The group recently demonstrated one of the basic building blocks for distributed quantum computing using entangled photons generated in optical fibers.

During their research into transfer bozons at CERN, the scientists needed a very quick-running program to help them track particle traces.
They called this program the grid, and it runs through optical fibres. Making it (apparently) 1000(0? Can't remember) faster than the internet.
It's thought that the grid could be layered over the internet, replacing it as the world wide communications network.
Ain't science the coolest?

My biggest fear is now closer than ever. I guess it's time to build that fall out shelter after all.
So will this new computer eventually make everything else junk? And I'm betting it'll jack up prices on everything, kind of like the Ps3 and the XBox 360 did to video games.

"Flying cars" won't get around until 2015, at least in the BACK TO THE FUTURE movies...it'll probably be around when JAWS 19 is out in the cinemas
