I think they've finally found a stride with the club toys. I think starting off with a five-year exclusive of all-original characters was hard to swallow (Heatwave and crew)... but my excitement picked up with Nightbeat, Punch, Dion, SG characters, Ramjet, and the twins. SideBurn looked really nice, too. Seems like they've really dipped into the lore and chosen some great characters with solid comic book development... fan support... or like Dion, obscure BUT important in the scheme of history.
So bottom line, I think they're picking good additions now — characters that enhance existing sets or lines, which is smart. I hope they can also work in an occasional, clever original character occasionally, still. (Perhaps as a Botcon add-on or such.) Those would need to be really solid, and look very nice though.
I kinda think of Treadshot from Botcon last year like this. Just a great looking, out of left field toy... or Slipstream. (though not completely original, at least the first figure for that character.)

He's not BW cartoon Depth Charge! He's some alternate universe variant!

He's still part of a Primax universal stream, which houses G1, BW and Wings. It could be possible this one hails from a stream in which the Beast Wars have yet to happen, similar to the more recent introduction of the Magnaboss trio, Grimlock and Ultra Mammoth.

Yeah, but I really wanted Fun Pub to make him be the cartoon version like the 2006 toys were.JelZe GoldRabbit wrote:He's still part of a Primax universal stream, which houses G1, BW and Wings. Yes, I know I can repurpose him myself, but I like sticking to canon.

I'm sure they are generally urged to put the convention toys in their own alt-universe playpen. I'm chalking this up as one of those moments.
That said, I wonder what universe they will say Ultra Mammoth resides in? Hmmm. If he's supposed to be in Beast Wars original canon universe, my head will spin.

He's Classicverse Ultra Magnus in a new body on Shatteredverse Prehistoric Earth.gothsaurus wrote:That said, I wonder what universe they will say Ultra Mammoth resides in? Hmmm. If he's supposed to be in Beast Wars original canon universe, my head will spin.

And I dont care if you read it either.

But then I found out he comes from the universe of not-TransTech Blackarachnia and not-TransTech Nightscream, who are indeed the two traitorous Maximals Depth Charge's bio speaks of.
And so, I take back my ill feelings. Well played, Fun Pub, well played.

I know what you mean. We all repurpose toys (well, those select few among us who actually play with Transformers toys as adult collectors anyway ), but sometimes we want to stick to the canon.
I'm still uncertain about registering. I'm hoping the Club announces new member exclusive figures not under their subscription service. Hopefully some sort of target for ol' Batmanta to hunt... HINT, HINT, FUNPUB.

But the annual "free" figure will stay if memory serves me right.

NOOOOOO- ah, whatever.
Wish Batmanta had a rival to play with.

This guy's more like Judge Dredd this time instead.Henry921 wrote:Wish Batmanta had a rival to play with.

Now I just need someone to be his rival... since he's a bounty hunter, I'll probably have Depth Charge spar with Lockdown in my display.
Or maybe slap a new head on Voyager TF2010 Payload and pretend he's pre-BW Rampage.

And, here's a thought. Maybe that universe will be the setting for the 2014 magazine story. That could possibly be kinda cool.

The story currently running in the magazine is called Beast Wars: Shattered Glass. It's set in the very distant past of the Shattered Glass universe version of Earth. Provided we continue to see only semi-monthly issues (as is likely), the story runs until at least the beginning of 2014.
It also provides a convenient explanation for how Megatron, Ultra Magnus, and their crews survived the destruction of the Classicverse during the Invasion storyline.
I'd lay better odds on Depth Charge and the other subscription figures at next Botcon, with a prologue set up on the club website.

Turns out it's called "Shattered Time". I guess "BW: SG" was a working title.Henry921 wrote:The story currently running in the magazine is called Beast Wars: Shattered Glass.

I'm talking about the idea of the home universe of Depth Charge, Blackarachnia, Nightscream, Scavenger, and Immorticon being the setting for the 2014 story.
I suggested it since it's a universe Fun Pub has made but has barely touched upon outside of this bio and Blackarachnia's bio.
But I wasn't talking about the subscription figures.Henry921 wrote:I'd lay better odds on Depth Charge and the other subscription figures at next Botcon, with a prologue set up on the club website.

Didn't Immorticon get pretty well toasted during the Transcendent storyline?

Sorry, I wasn't clear there. I meant Depth Charge might play a role in the fiction of next year's BotCon, and likewise might meet up with the next batch of subscription characters in said fiction.

Yeah, but I'm talking about the universe he and his three companions originally came from.Henry921 wrote:Didn't Immorticon get pretty well toasted during the Transcendent storyline?
Since it's been seldom mentioned before yet Depth Charge's bio reintroduced it to us, I figured it could possibly be the setting for a future storyline.

I'll be using this Depth Charge as my pre-Beast Wars Depth Charge on my shelf with my custom pre-Beast Wars Maximals and Predacons (I was not impressed by their treatment of repaints/retools in the Dawn of Futures Past set either, but this mold actually fits Depth Charge and he'll fit right in since I used mostly movie toys for my customs).
There is too much yellow though, as someone already mentioned. On his original figure, his hands were not yellow so I'll likely paint them up silver to make him look proper:
I don't know why the club changed his color scheme so much.
Posted by Sabrblade on March 7th, 2013 @ 1:00pm CST
In this case, it's a little ironic since the fictional universe that this Depth Charge hails from never had any toys to sell.xyl360 wrote:Their fiction is irrelevant to me. The crap that the club comes up with to sell their figures has never impressed me much.
not even Optimus Primal from Crumplezone? I felt that was ingenious!xyl360 wrote:(I was not impressed by their treatment of repaints/retools in the Dawn of Futures Past set either,
My guess is that they probably felt that a deco as simply as BW Depth Charge's on a mold as detailed as Terradive's would look too bland and not as attractive.xyl360 wrote:There is too much yellow though, as someone already mentioned. I've seen some fan customs of Depth Charge from the Terradive mold that, while nice-looking and faithful to his BW color scheme, obscured many of that mold's s finer details with the use of solid colors over large areas of the figure, instead of adding in more variety to the color to help make the mold really pop.

Except for this one of course .Sabrblade wrote:In this case, it's a little ironic since the fictional universe that this Depth Charge hails from never had any toys to sell.xyl360 wrote:Their fiction is irrelevant to me. Yeah, it looks decent, but IMO my mod of Skyhammer into Primal looks better and works better .Sabrblade wrote:not even Optimus Primal from Crumplezone? I felt that was ingenious!xyl360 wrote:(I was not impressed by their treatment of repaints/retools in the Dawn of Futures Past set either,
I'll give it a try and see how it goes. The hands on mine will be painted silver, I may do the feet as well but I won't change too much.Sabrblade wrote:My guess is that they probably felt that a deco as simply as BW Depth Charge's on a mold as detailed as Terradive's would look too bland and not as attractive.xyl360 wrote:There is too much yellow though, as someone already mentioned. True true.xyl360 wrote:Except for this one of course .
Well... given the time it came out... kinda hard to use Skyhammer back then.xyl360 wrote:Yeah, it looks decent, but IMO my mod of Skyhammer into Primal looks better and works better .
As for the yellow, like the guys said in the podcast, cover up the weapon and his amount of yellow is diminished.xyl360 wrote:I'll give it a try and see how it goes. The hands on mine will be painted silver, I may do the feet as well but I won't change too much.

Of course, I'm just saying, I don't think those molds worked well for Beast Wars (not that they exactly had better options back then, at least they tried).Sabrblade wrote:Well... given the time it came out... kinda hard to use Skyhammer back then.xyl360 wrote:Yeah, it looks decent, but IMO my mod of Skyhammer into Primal looks better and works better .
I'm ignoring the weapon. Just the feet and hands are what bugs me. Again, we'll see what it looks like in-hand, but I expect all the yellow they've added to the limbs is going to bug me.Sabrblade wrote:As for the yellow, like the guys said in the podcast, cover up the weapon and his amount of yellow is diminished.xyl360 wrote:I'll give it a try and see how it goes.
