While the interview does not really give any new information exactly, it's a good point to take to reflect on where the TF comics have come and will be going, with Till All Are One ending, and Optimus Prime and Lost Light reaching their second arcs, as First Strike is about to .. Strike the Hasbro Universe too. Check out some snippets below, and read the whole interview here!
The writers' biggest challenge is figuring out how to explore gender in a race that has rarely encountered it while avoiding making the characters feel wholly alien to readers.
"If you took a hard-science-fiction look at a world of machine life that reproduces asexually, ideas like gender and sex would be either nonexistent or very, very different than our human understanding and background in those issues," says Barber.
"But Transformers stories exist in our human world, where we know Optimus Prime is male because people say 'he' and he sounds like (voice actor) Peter Cullen and whatnot. So there's gender in there whether it makes hard-science-fiction sense or not."
[...]
"Initially, you were invited to think of them [Rewind and Chromedome --V] as very good friends, and as the story progressed, as I became more confident in what I could and couldn't do, we became more explicit in establishing them as 'robot husbands,'" says Roberts. "And I'm pleased to say that everyone involved — IDW editorial and Hasbro — have run with it. And fans, most importantly, seemed to like it."
[...]
"There are certain things that Hasbro will dictate that they do or do not want, but other than major things like 'Don't kill our main characters' or 'We really want to highlight this person,' they let us tell the stories that we want to tell," says Scott.

More elaborately, six IDW writers of the Hasbro Universe (Mairghread Scott, David Rodriguez, Max Dunbar, John Barber, Christos Gage, and Aubrey Sitterson) held an "Ask Me Anything" session on Reddit in which they took questions about their work and provided answers to several of them.Nik Hero wrote:Today on Reddit, John Barber said Wrath of Karza was right around Optimus Prime #1 and Salvation takes place right before Optimus Prime #13-14.

TF vs Visionaries #1
Transformers TAAO Annual
Optimus Prime #14 and
The Lost Light #13
will have been released, and all publications are current and no longer behind. I know this requires a month where 2 issues of OP & LL will have to be released, but its not entirely unprecedented. Otherwise IDW just needs to do like what they did with TAAO last year, and retroactively just state they are a month behind, and adjust any solicitations accordingly.

OP 13 is, as of now (could change), set for 11/22. This would have it caught up. I have no hope of Lost Light 13 showing up by year's end. We'll be lucky if 12 is out by then.o.supreme wrote:I hate to beat the same old drum...So I'll try to approach it differently. I could use some help on Wrath of Karza's placement with respect to Optimus Prime. I have it after Revolutionaries 2 and the first Joe and MASK arcs, what's the consensus on if it's after OP 6 or in the time gap in between Revolution and OP 1?
Also, apparently the X-Files stuff is not part of the HoS/Infestation 2 retcon because it exists in a self-canceling time loop.

I reported last year that the Titans Return one shot was (for lack of a better term) the 300th overall issue of the IDW Trasformers series (though because of retcons , and stories being told in TF history it now stands at #313)
Now it appears that the Optimus Prime Annual due out in February 2018 will be issue #400 (though this incorporates TF vs Visionaries in which issues 4 & 5 will not come until the next 2 months after the annual's supposed release date).
Still it's kind of cool for fans like myself who appreciate such milestone markers, even if the series itself overall is not my cup of tea, it's longevity is to be commended.

Things do break down once the Hasbro Universe starts in earnest if you're looking for chronological linearity, but for good reason. There's a great deal of concurrency to deal with, which isn't a big deal but it makes a purely chronological order somewhat difficult. "Swim lanes" get appropriate post-Revolution, and maybe someday I'll jump into Photoshop and do that. Basically: YMMV, and have fun!
Scotty P's Attempt at a Hasbro U Reading Order
The "Old College Try"/January 2018 Edition
1 - Pre-Revolution - these occur prior to Infiltration #0 but after Shockwave has initiated Regenesis. Exactly where? That's - as of now - up to your imagination on the first couple entries.
- Rom: Annual
- Rom vs Transformers: Shining Armor 1-5
- Hearts of Steel mini-series (optional, in my opinion)
- Infestation 2 mini-series (also optional, in my opinion. For this and the above, extra/back-matter in Revolutionaries will fill in the gaps!
2 - The Road To Revolution and Titans Return
- Hasbro Heroes Sourcebook #1 - "Roadies" opening short
- Transformers 50 - 55 ("All Hail Optimus"/Volume 10 TPB)
- Till All Are One 1-4 (Volume 1 TPB) - roughly concurrent with "All Hail Optimus"
- Micronauts 1-6 (Volume 1 TPB) - could really go anywhere before Revolution, because Time is All Things. I think it gives a satisfying real-life-reading-time gap in between some of the TF stuff going on here, making the transitions less jarring. YMMV
- Titans Return One-Shot
- Transformers 56-57
- More Than Meets The Eye 56-57
- First Strike #0 (Not a typo! Not the most satisfying place to read this but if you're looking for chronology, well...)
- Revolution #0
- M.A.S.K. Revolution - Rough guess with this being ~ a year before Revolution, but it would need to be after Blitzwing's capture.
- Rom #11-14 backup story "Tales of the Solstar Order"
- Rom #0
- Action Man #0-4
- Rom #1-4
3 - Revolution
- ROM Revolution
- Revolution #1
- Revolution #2
- Micronauts: Revolution
- Till All Are One: Revolution
- Revolution #3
- G.I. Joe: Revolution
- Transformers: Revolution
- Action Man: Revolution
- Revolution #4
- Revolution #5
- More Than Meets The Eye: Revolution
4 - Reconstruction
A list isn't the best representation here as there are a great deal of things happening more-or-less concurrently. YMMV, this list is what I like and it purposely jumps around to different things just for the sake of it at times.
- G.I. Joe #1-4
- M.A.S.K. #1-5
- Till All Are One #5-8 (Volume 2 TPB)
- Micronauts #7-9
- Micronauts Annual
- Micronauts #10-11
- Hasbro Heroes Sourcebook #2 - "Upgrades" opening short
- Revolutionaries #1-3 (Issue 1 occurs before Rom #5, Wrath of Karza is after issues 2 and 3)
- First Strike #1 backup story "The Origins of Evil, Part One: Redcliffe Club" (Probably. It's all messed up so... this feels good enough. Different contextual clues put this in different places, but it seems to work pretty ok here and it will remind you of some folks existing amidst other things going on.)
- M.A.S.K. Annual
- First Strike #2 backup story "The Origins of Evil, Part Two: A Game of Chess"
- M.A.S.K. #6-7
- Till All Are One #9-12
- Rom #5-14 - Not including the "Tales of the Solstar Order" story (This could be split up, but I'm not comfortable suggesting you have to for these purposes)
- Wrath of Karza #1-5
- First Strike #4 backup story "The Origins of Evil, Part Four: Hitting the Big Time"
- Revolutionaries #4-6 (issue 4 takes place sometime after Wrath of Karza, issue 6 is sometime after MASK #6)
- Optimus Prime #1-8 (Optimus Prime issue 7 is stated to occur roughly a year after the events of Transformers #50-55, "All Hail Optimus")
- Transformers Annual (2017)
- G.I. Joe #5-9 (I guess, nothing really jumps out as placing it here but it has to go somewhere)
- M.A.S.K. #8-10 (It has to go somewhere and I like putting it in before Revolutionaries wraps up.)
- Revolutionaries #7-8
- Optimus Prime #9-10
- First Strike #3 backup story "The Origins of Evil, Part Three: A Little Bit of Mayhem"
- First Strike #5 backup story "The Origins of Evil, Part Five: One Unholy Machine"
5 - First Strike
- First Strike #1
- Optimus Prime First Strike (events occur concurrently with First Strike #1)
- Optimus Prime #11 (events occur concurrently with Optimus Prime First Strike)
- Micronauts First Strike
- Rom First Strike (This and the Micronauts story basically stand alone with little else to do with the First Strike event, so may as well get them out of the way before the really interrelated stuff hits the forefront of the plot.)
- First Strike #2
- First Strike #3
- Optimus Prime #12 (events occur concurrently with First Strike #2-3)
- G.I. Joe First Strike
- M.A.S.K. First Strike
- First Strike #4
- Transformers First Strike (events occur concurrently with First Strike #2-4)
- First Strike #5
- First Strike #6
6 - The Road to Unicron
Same disclaimer would apply here with respect to things that happen roughly at the same time as other things. Some of this is also very clearly speculative. This is the point where, outside of the Visionaries forced-feeding, the shared universe concept feels like it's just there and normal - right on time for it to get eaten...
- Rom and the Micronauts 1-5 (Seems to be running parallel to other stories, but we'll see once it finishes up. This might get moved quite a bit later!)
- Transformers: Salvation
- Optimus Prime #13-14
- Till All Are One Annual
- Optimus Prime Annual (this starts before the TAAO annual, but ends after. Movies take awhile to make!)
- Transformers vs Visionaries #1-5 (placement of 4-5 currently conjecture)
- Optimus Prime #15-16
- Scarlett's Strike Force #1-3 (#2 references the Ore 13 mine opened up in KY during OP #15)
- Optimus Prime #17
7 - Our Darkest Yet Hypest Hour
- Unicron: Darkest Hour #0
You Left a Piece Out!
No I didn't, we just have no idea where it's "supposed" to go and honestly? You can read these as a separate series, at least thus far. I think that's changing soon and when it does it will in a big, significant way, but now I'm speculating and you're not here for that!

One question and a comment, if I may?
Why don't you have OP #9-10 together? (I know you will have a good reason I missed)
Barber said OP #13-14 happen right after Salvation. I like where you put it, but placed mine where Barber said instead.
I had the hardest time with the First Strike tie-ins and issues because they all seemed to be continuous stories with no room for breaks, so I'm really grateful for your list.
I found the same issue with Revolutionaries and seeing other stories flow through the same time periods.
Again, thank you so much, ScottyP!

6 - The Road to Unicron
- Rom and the Micronauts 1-5 (kinda just runs parallel to other stories, can really go anywhere within this subset of books)
- Transformers: Salvation
- Optimus Prime #13-14
- Till All Are One Annual
- Optimus Prime Annual (this starts before the TAAO annual, but ends after.)
- Optimus Prime #15-16
- Scarlett's Strike Force #1-3 (#2 references the Ore 13 mine opened up in KY during OP #15)
- Optimus Prime #17-21
- Transformers vs Visionaries #1-5
- Requiem of the Wreckers
7 - End of the Road
- Optimus Prime #22 (pages 1-13)
- Unicron #0
- Optimus Prime #22 (pages 14-20)
- "Ad Infinitum" - back up Rom strip published in Unicron #1
- Unicron #1-3
- "Last Stand" - back up G.I. Joe strip published in Unicron #2
- Unicron #4
- Optimus Prime #23 (mostly concurrent with Unicron #4)
- Optimus Prime #24
- "Reunion" - back up M.A.S.K. strip published in Unicron #3
- "Transition" - back up Micronauts strip published in Unicron #4
- Unicron #5
- "A World and a Future" - back up Visionaries strip published in Unicron #5
- Unicron #6
- Optimus Prime #25 (presumably, releases 11/21)
- Lost Light #25
Lost Light 1-24 can go anywhere you like. I like putting LL 1-7 ("Dissolution") just before First Strike, 8-9 before the list above, 10-12 somewhere around the TAAO Annual just to check in, 13-15 just before OP 17-21 ("The Falling"), and 16-24 either just before Unicron or just after all that. I stress that this is entirely subjective and there is no "right" answer with respect to Lost Light 1-24's "chronological" placement.

Posted by ScottyP on June 12th, 2018 @ 8:01am CDT
So as laid out on the page, unfortunately no. However, within each series they're very close to bekng in order, and each of the individual issues' pages does have its first publication date available. That's a bit of a slog to dig through, let me see if I have a way to make that easier.Fires_Of_Inferno wrote:So I've finally decided to catch up on the IDW Transformers. I've gotten all the first 4 volumes of the Spotlight comics (not sure if there's more) in tpb form, I have all of Megatron Origins, I have Last Stand of The Wreckers, I have volume 1 of Robots in Disguise and More than Meets The Eye, and I have the Transformers/Avengers crossover comic. Other than that, that's all I know about what's going on. I've searched around, and all I can find is lists for reading the IDW Transformers comics in chronological order. I'd rather read it in order that IDW Released them because I'm weird that way. However I've found it hard to actually find a release date list rather than an in-universe chronological list.
Would this: https://www.seibertron.com/comics/series.php be accurate for what I'm looking for? Or did IDW release in a different order?
The series order is off because there have been several admins for that area over the years, including a 2.5 year stretch where no one touched it, and I'm still playing catch-up on some material. At least all the books are there now even if some have bare-bones credits/covers and a ton are missing character lists.
I will say that the Phase 2 hardcovers have been more-or-less in publication order. Not dead on to it, but way closer than the Phase 1 books. I will say that they did you a huge favor by making the Phase 1 collections chronological!

Many consider everything that IDW put out in its main Transformers continuity after the Mike Costa-penned ongoing ended (that being primarily everything written by John Barber, James Roberts, and Mairghread Scott), collectively known as "Phase Two", to be the new golden age of Transformers comics.Stormwolf wrote:Hello there, I took a small 6 year break from IDW's transformers.
