Top 10 Best Optimus Prime / Convoy toys
This is the 20th biweekly Top TF list Seibertron has published and to celebrate, the whole staff got together to discuss the top 10 Optimus Prime toys (we will go back to regular top 5 lists in two weeks). Optimus being arguably the most popular character in the Transformers franchise has a truckload of toys to his name (as does his Japanese counterpart Convoy). This list will dive into all sorts of eras and aesthetics to give a global view of the great toys this iconic character has to offer. While we can get bogged down by specifics till the cows come home, this list tries to be as straightforward as possible where any toy called Convoy/Optimus Prime counts (Optimus Primal (Beast Convoy) will be for another list since he has his own legacy of toys).
10. Transformers Robots In Disguise Optimus Prime (Fire Convoy)
Burn- "A big shift for Prime as he took on a fire engine. In a way he set the precedent for his successor, Cybertron Prime. He had one advantage though, he could combine with Ultra Magnus to form an even more impressive figure."
William-James88- "This is a beast of a bot and I adore that super mode headsculpt. I really feel this is the point in time where Japan decided to let loose and see how far they could go in terms of complex transformations at that point in time."
9. Transformers Generation 2 Laser Optimus Prime (Battle Convoy)
While the Reveal the Shield Deluxe Optimus Prime toy was also discussed to be included on this list, it was soon agreed that there was no need with the original toy it is homaging already on the list.
Counterpuch- "Original Lazer Prime is so much better than the RTS version, in my opinion."
Burn- "This is the guy that for years could be regarded as one, if not the best, Optimus Prime. Gone are the days of little articulation. Instead we got a big hulking Prime who embraced the 80's era shoulder pads (he was a bit late to the party though) and also became one of the first toys to come with melee weapons. And he also had a nice trailer that could transform and shoot little round discs that little Johnny would no doubt injure his eyes on!"
8. Transformers Age of Extinction: Generations Evasion Mode Optimus Prime
William-James88- "This toy is ambitious for trying to merge a totally different take on the character's design with G1. It obviously isn't as accurate or the most faithful "movie prime" but that is what I like about it. Instead, it is a fusion of two distinct styles coming together in a perfect marriage. This design to me is not movie Prime but instead G1 Prime in movie form with a full on G1 alt mode and smooth panels where there would have instead been multilayered armour, were this to indulge more in the movie aesthetic. I also adore the total lack of any kibble in either mode, the engineering is top notch here and this was my favourite toy of the entire AOE line."
Instead of a quote, one of our staff members, Shajaki, showed how fond he was of this mold by attempting to buy them all and take pictures of the varied decos. Sometimes a picture (or a few more) is truly worth a thousand words.
7. Transformers Beast Wars Neo Big Convoy
William-James88- "While Optimus Primal is great in his own right, this toy is more what the (G1) Optimus Prime / Convoy character would be as a beast. He has an amazing classic Optimus headsculpt which is coupled with reflective eyes and viking horns honing in on the more barbaric theme this toy is going for. It is also a great example of how fun a shellformer could be, using the shell to fully disguise the robot. While the abundance of new robot detail does mean the shell can be found all over the robot, it looks like G1 Optimus awoke from his slumber during those millions of years on earth and ventured out in the ice age, battling mammoths and skinning them to wear their pelts (it's one of my favourite TF images, it will probably come up again). This is by far one of the most badass molds Convoy ever had and it contains the very first Matrix accessory. If this toy wasn't awesome enough, he has an even more badass deco provided by Hasbro when it was issued as Nemesis Prime"
6. Transformers Generations War For Cybertron Cybertronian Optimus Prime
Mooncake- "Top prime is WFC dlx OP"
William-James88- "I have never seen this level of complexity at the Deluxe class. Instead of making this just a shellformer and calling it a day, the smooth alt mode is a mosaic of smaller panels which merge together from various parts of the robot, such as the legs, shoulder pads, arms, chest and cod piece. It is also my favourite take on what Optimus looked like before coming to earth and it works very well for the character."
5. Transformers Animated Voyager Optimus Prime
Va'al- "Animated Voyager Optimus Prime is a wonder of engineering"
William-James88- "What works so well with this figure is how it is practically a straight up G1 update with the head, arms and legs basically being at the exact same spot they are in the G1 toy. And yet, it feels completely fresh and refined. It is amazing how the toy replicates the hyperstylized look of the show."
4. Transformers Revenge of the Fallen Optimus Prime
Burn- "Say what you want about the movie, but it gave us one of the most complex and highly detailed Optimus Primes."
William-James88 "I cannot believe they were able to pull off this toy. The great disparity between the first movie Optimus and the CG model made us think that it would not be possible to showcase the many moving parts of the CG model in toy form, and even less have him transform into a truck. This toy proved that the impossible was not out of reach and that Hasbro was ready to evolve with the brand by making toys for a far more mature audience than before. Along with the engineering wizards at Takara, they did their best to imitate an already conceived character design made for a different medium. And once again, this hyper detailed and hulking Optimus toy transforms into a tight truck which shows barely any sign at any angle that it can transform "
3. Transformers G1 Optimus Prime (Battle Convoy)
Seibertron- "The original Optimus Prime toy is one of the best toys ever. It's a classic toy that will be remembered for decades to come. It is such an iconic toy that it has been reissued or recolored at least a dozen times"
Burn- "It's iconic, he's in a league of his own."
Autobot 032- "G1 wins, hands down. I'm not even a big fan of G1, either, so that should tell you something."
2. Transformers Cybertron Optimus Prime (Galaxy Convoy)
Burn- "Top Prime is Cybertron Prime! To me this was a great figure in both robot and vehicle mode. You could transform the cab into its own robot and use the trailer as a base platform, or you could combine him with his trailer to make one big dangerous looking Prime."
William-James88- "This to me is a true update of G1 Prime for a brave new world. He is just as simple and transforms practically the same way. However, he has a bold new look, excellent proportions, is very sturdy as well as jammed pack with new playability features making this both a favourite of young kids and older collectors. The supermode is easy to convert to and can be configured as you wish. I love how unobtrusive all the gimmicks are and how everything fits together perfectly such as the literal back pack (with straps!) and his battle mask."
1. Transformers Masterpiece Optimus Prime MP-1 Convoy and Transformers Masterpiece Optimus Prime MP-10 Convoy
William-James88- "These are undoubtedly the best Optimus Prime toys available for Transformers fans. I adore that arm and chest transformation, it's like the G1 animation come to life. These are both complex toys made very intuitive. While MP 10 may be the better of the two, I really feel both deserve this top spot since all MP 10 did was slightly improve over MP 1 (still didn't fix the cod piece being visible in alt mode though). It was the first Masterpiece Optimus which really revolutionized Transformers toys as we know them, giving them a whole new depth and showing us the possibility of reverse engineering a design from a cartoon model and turning that into a toy. This figure paved the way for the masterpiece line and MP 10 breathed new life into the line, turning it into what it is today. Also, you just gotta love that die cast on MP 1, he feels so solid. This was a toy people had been wanting for 20 years and it is still amazing today! "
Mindmaster- "If we're talking top Optimus toys, I'm throwing my hat in the ring for MP10"
Burn- "It's Masterpiece. The title by default says best."
Honorable mentions: Here are some others the staff brought up but that were cut in favor of the others present on this list.
Machine Wars Optimus Prime, RTS Optimus Prime, Power Master Optimus Prime, DOTM Voyager Fireburst Optimus Prime, DOTM Deluxe Optimus Prime, TF: Animated Cybertron Mode Optimus Prime, Voyager Classics Optimus Prime, Prime First Edition Optimus Prime.

Although I do believe classics Prime should have made the list and that the movie primes should have been just a tick higher a piece, considering RotF Prime is probably the most complex prime to date and AoE managed to merge G1 and movie without kibble or funky parts

AoE Evasion Prime pulls off the G1 cab mode better than any G1 Prime toy does while having a superbly posable kibble-free athletic-looking robot in there.
I agree totally with RotF Leader Prime. I've said before that it's one of the most amazing pieces of Transformer toy design and engineering. I love it.
Classics Prime should be in there somewhere. It brought back the G1 character in toy form in a nicely refreshed and highly playable that was a big reason (along with Classics Rodimus) why I started getting back into Transformers in 2006 after the false start from MP1 Prime (and then the 2007 movie really grabbed my interest back into the toyline and I had to finally admit I was collecting toys again for the first time since I was a young teenager).
I'm still fond of G1 Powermaster Prime. Yes it's bricky but it's still a fun toy and is the only one of my original G1 toys from my childhood that I couldn't part with during my mass selling some years ago.

Glad to see Fire Convoy on the list as he's a fantastic piece, same with Cybertron Prime. On that subject though, what is the proper placement for the wings on his (Cybertron Prime) super mode? I always thought that the tips pointed up so that the guns slung under his arms.

Yeah its a good figure but is it great no not by a long shot. I would take that one off the list and put robotmaster prime or Classics voyager prime in its place.
I've never understood the fuss over it either. It's not bad, but it doesn't do anything to stand out. The transformation is too simple, the chunkiness and ratcheting joints make posing it awkward, and the super mode is just a backpack and platform shoes.

As for Galaxy Convoy, I put him on my list mainly because of his appearance in both modes. He might have a simple transformation and a brick-ish robot mode, but he still looks imposing and extremely cartoon accurate. And the truck mode is just badass. I really hope the next Chinese Prime after YoTM will be of that mold.

I am a bit shocked at the photos used for G1 Prime, since they weren't truly photos of G1 Prime. That was the one that came in a two pack with a Dark of the Moon Optimus Prime, and the two toys shared the DotM Prime's trailer. (And the G1 cab was modified to accommodate, as otherwise the trailer hitch would not have a peg hole to plug a gun into.)
To compare, one of the photos you used:
A true G1 Prime with his proper trailer:
And the toy the trailer you pictured is properly supposed to go with (may differ slightly as I am picturing the domestically released version of the trailer):
The Evasion Mode Optimus Prime mold is pretty much the only Age of Extinction toy I was even at all tempted by. I never did pick it up, but maybe I shall track one down some day. (Preferably a version with the face plate.)
A few Primes I love that aren't on the list:
Smallest Transforming Transformers G1 Convoy. All of the goodness of the original G1 toy in a bite-sized bot! (Note, mine has been augmented with Reprolabels and a third party replacement for the artillery robot inside the Combat Deck. But even without those, he'd be on my list.)
Powermaster Optimus Prime. Yes, he is a classic example of a G1 brick, but while not as great as the original Optimus Prime, I had one as a kid and have a lot of nostalgia for him. (The one I own now is a Japanese reissue, and thus technically not Optimus but rather Ginrai, but he's still Optimus in my collecton.)
(That final three-way split screen photo also has a G1 Prime in it, 'cause... why not?)
If I were going to include a Movie Prime on my list, it'd probably be the Voyager Class Battle Blades Optimus Prime. Managed to take the complexity of RotF Leader Prime and effectively shrink it down. And no annoying "I am Optimus Prime" over and over again as you transform him! Plus guns and the removable matrix... Overall actually managed to improve upon the already really good Leader Class version.
(Pardon the stock photo of the above. My movie Primes are in storage due to a lack of display room for them, and I have no decent personal photos handy of him to include.)
While maybe not one of my absoloute favorites, the Reveal the Shield Optimus Prime deserves special mention for managing to update the G2 Laser Optimus Prime, and do it in a way that actually doesn't cheat the chest windows! (Note, there's some Reprolabels on this guy, too. And... a new head.)
Sadly, the above didn't come with a trailer. Shame there's nothing we can do about that... cough, cough...
And finally, I would be remiss if I didn't profess my own love for the original Classics Prime mold. Although, full disclosure, he isn't complete without a third party trailer to make him a true update of his G1 equivalent. (And, of course, he has Reprolabels!)
A recreation I did of a G1 catalog shot:
I suppose without the trailer, the Classics Prime would just be a very strong honorable mention. But with it, he is definitely one of my top favorites!
And just to close out this post, remember to vote Prime in the next election!

In any case I love the Generations Legends Prime.

Yes, it lacks knees. And any neck articulation. But he came out in the far distant past of 2011, when dragons roamed the lands, people thought the Earth was flat, and Legends Class toys were more simple affairs. I choose to not hold this against the toy, and judge it for what it is, not what it isn't.
But to each their own. The newer one (from a whole two years later!) is also quite a good toy.

Even if I ADORE God Ginrai and he's in my Optimus collection, I agree for him to not be on the list because he's NOT OPtimus.
Personally, I would have removed Big Convoy because he's not that marvelous for me. Too many shell bits and kibble.
In lieu of Big Convoy, I would have put in Alternity Optimus Prime. This is defenitely the best Alternity mold. So good, that it's the only mold they reused for the Super GT line! Also, seeing Optimus going against the flow and becoming a CAR instead of a truck is quite refreshing!
Ultra Markus wrote:what about classics optimus prime? or CW optimus prime?
CW Optimus is not really Optimus. It's MOTORMASTER cosplaying as Optimus. The sneaky basterd!
As for Classic OP, he's good, but the horrible arm kibble clearly remove him from perfection. Those kibbles should have wraped around his arms or something.

Transformers Generations Combiner Wars Ultra Magnus Gallery
If yes, then I agree he is a fun little guy. The leg transformation is even more basic than the g1 toy though. Oh and if you do mean this toy, then that's motormaster rather than Nemesis Prime. I don't think they ever made a Nemesis with this mold.
Nemesis Destron wrote:Delta Magnus wrote:

A Megatron list is coming for sure but it will be top 5 and not top 10. Unlike Optimus, all Megatron toys seem to have a major flaw somewhere and the staff team couldnt come up with a top 10 they all agreed on. So we actually found it easier to just narrow t down to 5 figures we felt really good about with every other decent figure becoming an honourable mention. Also, unlike this list, we actually included all toys called Megatron. The list should come out in a few months.

Well, if you remove God Bomber from the equation, he basically is Powermaster Optimus Prime. And I suppose you could even include God Bomber now, thanks to the domestic Powermaster Prime reissue that included him (renamed Apex Bomber). It really is a tricky case with him, as he is one toy that has two completely different fictions as two completely different characters, all pretty much depending on which side of the Pacific you live on.

But my Alternity Convoy? Ugh... If I transform him at all, it is only because I typically transform all of my Optimi at once.
As far as realistic licensed vehicle based G1 Optimus Primes go, I actually prefer the Alternators/Binaltech Dodge Ram mold over the Alternity mold.
Optimizzy wrote:My collection of Primes consists mainly of characters that I felt was initially supposed to be a version of the G1 self.
That is kind of what I limit myself to these days, due to display space concerns. Here's my collection as it currently is displayed, minus Classics Voyager Prime who is on display on my Classics '84 Autobots shelf.
Mostly G1 or G2 based ones, although I do have a few Transformers Prime ones in there as well. If I ever need to make more room for G1 based ones, though, the Prime ones will be the first to go. Nothing against them as toys, I just know which ones I'd give priority to in my display.
If I had more room, though, my other Optimus Primes that would come out of storage include Transformers Robots In Disguise Optimus Prime (Fire Convoy) in three different scales, a few scales of Armada Prime, a few scales of Cybertron Prime, a bunch of Animated Primes, and a whole gaggle of Primes from the first three live action films. Everything mentioned in this paragraph is enough to fill two more shelves like the ones shown in the photo above. I know this, as once upon a time they did in fact fill the other two shelves on that shelving unit.
But these days, the top shelf has become my "Classics style" '86 Autobot display (only place I could fit Metroplex!) and the bottom shelf has been relegated to, alas, more practical non-Transformers related storage. I think sometimes about trying to reclaim the bottom shelf, but then I'd have to find someplace else for the stuff currently on that shelf...

I've already had this discussion with Delta Magnus! And it seems he meant this guy:
That's the problem with a character with so many toys. Multiple characters, even, since there are Optimus Primes across many different continuities! It really isn't enough just to identify him by size class and hope everyone knows who you're talking about! You need to be very specific which toy you're talking about!

I LOVE TF Masterforce. Ginrai is a great character and I really love Ginrai. Honestly, I wonder where "Powermaster Optimus Prime" come from? The theory I have is because Masterforce was never shown outside Japan, they released the first version of the toy with just a bio on the box explaining the story. Is there any European or Amercan comics that show an original story for PM Prime? Because for me, there is only ONE. Ginrai.
As for Alternity Optimus, I find transforming him quite easy. The legs are the most complex part, but it's easy to figure out where everything go. Compared to Bee's ultra hard and tight chest transformation, or the self-destructing seeker mold, I find Alt OP to be a breeze and pretty fun. As much as Megatron in fact. Optimus is also the best Alternity to pose without flopping all over the place.
However, I DESPITE Alternator Optimus. No panels align right in vehicle mode and the shoulder kibbles in bot mode are unsightly. I wont sell him, but he's burried in storage.

Even as a huge fan of the 1984 toy, I'm fine with him at the number three spot. I'd agree with the Masterpiece versions sharing the number one spot, as they are basically the '84 toy reimagined with modern toy engineering and complexity. Just for the original Masterpiece version, I'd insist on a version that comes with the trailer. I know there are many who don't care, but to me G1 Optimus just isn't complete without it!
As for the number two spot... Not sure if I would include Cybertron Optimus there, myself. Maybe I'd move the '84 toy up at least one spot, after all?

The theory I have is because Masterforce was never shown outside Japan, they released the first version of the toy with just a bio on the box explaining the story. Is there any European or Amercan comics that show an original story for PM Prime? Because for me, there is only ONE. Ginrai.
I am amused that you're all, "Ginrai!" and I'm all, "Powermaster Optimus Prime!" and yet, judging by your photo technically the toy you have is Powermaster Optimus Prime (I can tell from the stupidly elongated missile on Apex Bomber) and the toy I have is technically Ginrai.
I'd offer to swap toys... But I don't want that stupidly elongated missile!
-Kanrabat- wrote:As for Alternity Optimus, I find transforming him quite easy.
I don't find his legs that difficult. For me, I always have a devil of a time getting his chest transformed properly! But, honestly, I wonder if there might be something wrong with mine. I suspect there may be a piece in his internal structure that is bent or something, making it more difficult then it should be, but not really preventing him from getting to either mode in the end. If so, then I guess it is just my Alternity Optimus that is a pain in the arse to transform, and not all of them!
-Kanrabat- wrote:However, I DESPITE Alternator Optimus. No panels align right in vehicle mode and the shoulder kibbles in bot mode are unsightly. I wont sell him, but he's burried in storage.
Well, I wouldn't put the Alternator one on a top ten list to be sure. His shoulder kibble is, as you say, a bit unslightly. But I actually usually don't have too much trouble getting his panel lines to line up right in vehicle mode. And, while I wouldn't use this in a ranking since it isn't part of the base figure, his vehicle mode looks really good with Reprolabels!
(Pardon the older photo... One of these days, I suppose I should write a review of this guy, which would involve taking newer and better photos.)

What I have is a Reissue of God Ginrai. For some reasons, the new safety measure made the missile extra long. It have the fold in hands and the cab is all diecast. So, it IS God Ginrai. Just a reissue. Also, I have a G1 Takara Ultra Magnus Reissue. His missiles are stupid elongated as well. Cherry on the cake, one peg to hold the missile launcher in vehicle mode is all crooked. :/
My Alternity Convoy's chest transform like a breeze so maybe yours is either broken of have a factory error. That suck because getting a replacement will be quite expensive. Maybe get the Super GT version?
It may be the same case for my Alternator because I cant seem to be able to allign the panels of the hood and front of the vehicle for some reason. Also, to make a bad toy even badder, I bought it brand new and the gun-engine have two right halves.

The Marvel comics had an arc where the Original Optimus blew up but some guy saved his personality on a disc and when the Autobots found out they took the disc to Nebulon and had a new body made for him but after the Headmaster incident the Nebulons did something to the atmosphere to make it hazardous to Transformers and the only way they could survive is if they went through the Powermaster process. It's dumb. Hi-Q was Optimuses partner in it. As dumb as it is I personally think after that point is when the comics start to get really good (until that stupid end).

Nope, sorry. What you have is the reissue Powermaster Optimus Prime.
It was based more off of the Ginrai version of the mold, so it included things such as the diecast in the cab and the collapsible hands on the trailer. But you can definitely tell it is Optimus Prime you have because of the elongated missile on the renamed Apex Bomber (because God Bomber just wouldn't be a suitable name for an American toy, I guess.)
I can guarantee that the reissue of God Ginrai, on the other hand, does not have the elongated missile, as the version I have is the reissue.
And as you can see, the missile is not elongated.
Got him for a really good price once upon a time, actually. Found him on eBay, and the seller had him listed as Ginrai, but hadn't also mentioned Optimus Prime anywhere in their auction's title or description. Thus it probably wasn't showing up in most people's searches, as I doubt most people would even think to search for "Ginrai."
-Kanrabat- wrote:Also, I have a G1 Takara Ultra Magnus Reissue. His missiles are stupid elongated as well. Cherry on the cake, one peg to hold the missile launcher in vehicle mode is all crooked. :/
Now that is bizarre. I don't have any G1 Ultra Magnuses, so I can only speak off of second hand knowledge. But the best image I could find of a reissue Ultra Magnus was this:
And as you can see, original length missiles are shown.
Another possible clue: look at the smokestacks. No U.S. reissue of the G1 Optimus Prime cab (which is, of course, shared by Magnus) has had full length smokestacks, and no Takara reissue has used the shortened smokestacks. So are your Magnus's smokestacks full length or shortened?
Did you get your toys (both Optimus/Ginrai and Ultra Magnus) boxed or loose? Are you sure they are Takara versions, and not Hasbro ones? No chance maybe of an unscrupulous seller telling you they were Takara so they could jack up the price?
-Kanrabat- wrote:My Alternity Convoy's chest transform like a breeze so maybe yours is either broken of have a factory error. That suck because getting a replacement will be quite expensive. Maybe get the Super GT version?
I speculated as such. As for replacing it, I had no plans to. As I said, it is a pain in the arse to transform, but not impossible. And I don't like the look of the Super GT version, anyway.

That is kind of what I limit myself to these days, due to display space concerns. Here's my collection as it currently is displayed, minus Classics Voyager Prime who is on display on my Classics '84 Autobots shelf.
Here is mine from a year ago. It doesn't have my MP-10, TT Armor Knight Prime, RID2015 Prime and some various one steps or something. I put mine up in Bot form to conserve space, but It prevents me from taking any out to look at them. I limit myself to a single version of of the mold but recently I've also limited myself to a single example of the iteration. IE, one Prime from AoE and one Prime from RID2015 but I don't always follow this rule. I'm pretty happy with it, but I haven't bought a Fire Convoy or a Big Convoy since I don't consider them versions of Prime.

As for UM, this is what I got, brand new:
http://chimungmung.com/product_info.php ... ts_id=1966
BBTS offer it too. For some reasons, the missile launchers are not showing. Still, it's say in the description that it have short smokestacks and long missiles. It's also way more expensive than Chimungmung's.

Yeah, just after hitting "submit" on my last post, it occurred to me to express a similar sentiment, but I was too lazy to go back and edit my post. Technically your toy may be Optimus Prime and my toy may be Ginrai, but as long as we are each happy with the toys we have, we can call them whatever we want in our personal collections! And thus, all is good.

Yup, definitely the Hasbro version there. Even says, "This toy is original by HASBRO" in the description. Hence why you have elongated missiles on that guy, too.

Oh yeah, Hasbro. Still, it may be Hasbro ASIA because I never see the thing announced in brick-n-mortar stores in North America.
Speaking of Magnus, I would like a "Optimus Prime" colored G1 Ultra Magnus, just to have Optimus Prime in his supposed first super mode armor.
I should maybe buy the Diaclone version for that purpose, but I kinda don't want to sell any organs right now.
