Top 5 Best Ironhide Transformers Toys
With us finally getting a Masterpiece Ironhide, I thought it would be a good time to look at all the good Ironhide toys we have had in the past. What is funny about Ironhide is that his initial figure is one of the most unappealing to a Transformers fan (especially a child). The toy itself doesn't have a head. Instead, it has a weird face on a sticker stuck on a seat behind his windshield. This is of course because he is a re-purposed figure from a line where little figures would pilot these mecha toys but while this is fun for toy history buffs, it is a weak consolation to a kid who just sees a toy which looks nothing like he does on the show. His next few toys were also pretty bad and he still doesn't have a decent classics-styled toy to this day. However, he does have some good toys under his diaper belt and here they are:
5. Transformers Revenge of the Fallen Recon Ironhide
Oh man, would you look at this thing! It is bad to the bone. While people have a problem with the Ironhide Voyager mold, I never found it that bad. It definitely gave us a more complex toy. I always preferred the versions which hid his arms and this is one of them. The full load of weapons could hide anything, just look at the pictures below. This is Arnold Schwarzenegger's Commando in toy form. Plus, this was the very first toy to integrate the c-clip system where you could clip on new guns to different toys (like clipping Generations Darkmount's guns onto Generations deluxe Warpath).
Plus, his front bumper becomes a crossbow
4. Transformers Dark of the Moon Leader Ironhide
I really like this toy. Sure, it is easier than every other movie leader since Revenge of the Fallen, but I am not complaining about being able to go from one beautiful looking truck mode to an amazing looking robot quickly. He is by far the best looking movie Ironhide to have next to any leader Optimus Prime on your movie shelf and he has some great gimmicks. He has two sets of guns that can pop up while in truck mode (and end up being deployable from his robot arms) and some hidden armament in his legs, including a really sweet knife when he likes to get up close and personal. Along with that he has his big leader electronics gimmick (is it normal that I miss those?) where his chest open up to reveal a giant cannon barrel which spins and lights up. While he has some negative points, the only one that bothers me aside from the obvious undercarriage kibble is that the truck sides just bunch up under his robot arms. It isn't the prettiest sight but it does add some much needed bulk. While people can dislike movie figures all they want, I feel nostalgic for nice hefty Transformers Leader figures who had a bunch of fun electronics and sublime detail. I mean think about it, you get fully retractable weapons in both bot and alt mode, a gun and big knife hidden in a leg scabbard ala Robocop, great paint apps for a retail release and a battle mask!
3. Transformers Prime: Cyberverse Ironhide
This is fun design, incorporating Ironhide into the Prime line and aesthetic. This design is actually phenomenal since it brings so much together at once. He is a great amalgamation of the G1 and movie look in a more animated aesthetic with the headsculpt and clear chest (G1 cues) working with the pickup truck alt mode and dual cannons (from the Bay films). Also I would like to point out brilliant the transformation is. While the Arms Micron deluxe Ironhide relied on a fake chest, the Cyberverse version actually has the truck's windshield be the robot's chest. It is impressive to see great alt mode integration on a toy which has so much new details in robot mode. Remember when I spoke of an animated aesthetic? This toy's amalgamation (along with the deluxe) also references a shelved design for Animated Ironhide who was supposed to join Optimus Prime on earth and have an earth mode. That is a lot going on for such a little fella.
2. Transformers Animated Ironhide (Armorhide)
This is a near flawless toy. I find it absolutely brilliant how the cartoon made it that both Ironhide and Ratchet share the same basic mold (which has been the case since 1984) but since Ratchet is now on earth and has an earth vehicle mode, you end up with two visually different characters. The toys do that well. Sure, there is a Ratchet who shares the same mold as this toy but I love how Ironhide makes the mold his own (as he always has). The perfect toon accurate headsculpt really helps. The design of this toy is incredible since it was made after the stylistic cartoon character models were done and it imitates that style perfectly. Also, through this mold, you get one of the most creative designs for a cybertronian vehicle. I love how they were thinking outside the box for this one, giving it almost an animal look (like a tortoise) adding some sentience and otherworldly functionality to the vehicle mode. The weapon storage in vehicle mode is also perfectly executed with simplicity and helps fill out the look of the vehicle. It's a smart design that looks just like the cartoon and has great nods to the G1 character. Sounds like pure win in my book.
1. Transformers Masterpiece Ironhide
When was the last time we found a decent representation of G1 Ironhide in stores? Never. Look at this list, it's either animated, movie or a mix of both. But nothing even close to G1. No vans of any kind. And that's because there really hasn't been much aside from the forthcoming honourable mention. But we finally got Ironhide in all hi glory in this Masterpiece offering. I seriously do not care what nitpicks any fan may have, this toy is better than anything I could have dreamed. The Transformation is one of the best Takara ever designed and it is a true spectacle to see that van shape into this robot before your very eyes. I always thought that to have the look of the show, we would need a fake chest, no way around it. But I am proven wrong. The alt mode integration is spot on, no extraneous kibble (aside from some wheels, though they might anatomically represent something related to the bot mode, up to you) and more accessories than you would ever need. Plus, all those accessories come in that sled, bringing a magnificent homage to the G1 toy (along with other neat homages like that G1 face in can mode). I can't speak highly of this toy enough.
Honourable mentions: My lists usually always look at toys that were released at retail, especially since I care more for the toy itself and thus the mold as opposed to the character it represents. In this case though, the character it represents is a big deal and Ironhide is no stranger to redecos since that is what he started as. So I will include his Botcon 2005 Exclusive toy here, even though I am not a big fan of the mold itself. Fellow Seibertronian Sabrblade says it best:
Sabrblade wrote:It's still arguably the best Classics-style Ironhide toy there is in terms of resembling the character and [is] a good toy overall.

I disagree. I can SEE why people have that opinion; the panel lines in alt mode (doesn't bother me, much), and not being able to put his arms down at his side (that does bother me a little)... But the bot mode still looks good, I think, and that mold has one of the funnest transformations of any of the classicsverse figures -and that is the most important part for me.

Well, as someone who does own it, it's a pretty bad figure. His head isn't just visible, it also has a giant electronic gimmick permanently attached to it. It really has more of a Fisher Price feel to it than a Transformers feel. It's not the worst figure ever (or even the worst Energon figure) but it's definitely not good overall either.

I own the green recolor of him, and I agree he's pretty underrated. Honestly, barring the visible head he's actually pretty good. Nice, beefy alternate mode, fun and easy transformation, beefy robot mode with good articulation and probably the best damned Powerlinx modes of Energon. And heck, he's got molded seats and a steering wheel in his cab! okay, it's not Alternators-level, but it's still good to see!
And hell, the visible head might be a minor blessing in disguise. People hear how 'horrible' it is, then they get the toy and realize other than that, he's a good toy.

I guess I'd agree with your list, except I'd toss out CW (repaints don't count on my book) and replace it with the G1 original, which I have much nostalgic love for.

Thanks. As for repaints, it's hard not to count repaints when thinking of Ironhide or Ratchet. And the CW version isnt a repaint, he is a retool since he has a new head. In that regard, there is no difference between CW Ironhide and Animated Ironhide (which we all agree is a great toy and worthy of this list).
OptimalOptimus2 wrote:In my opinion, the 2007 Movie Ironhide is the best Ironhide toy there is. Sure he may be a little thinner than his film counterpart, but the overall design and detail matches perfectly. I should also mention that his vehicle mode is the most realistic of the Voyager toys.
The 2007 Iornhide mold is on this list; Recon Ironhide uses it but gives it a better head and a whole bunch of weapons

Oh and for the people asking about Energon Ironhide, I had the toy twice through buying lots and gave it away both times. I couldn't stand having it in my collection, the flaws are just too great and it has the laziest design I have ever seen on a TF with that head and giant speakers above the roof. The thing is an eyesore. It did make this list though: top-5-worst-cases-of-visible-head-syndrome-among-transformers-toys-t104938.php

Assuming we're talking about the elephant that forms most of Magnaboss, BW Ironhide has always been oddly alluring to me. I never knew who any of the namesakes were when I first got Magnaboss on Christmas of '97 (I think it was '97), so he just was this quirky elephant robot with a weird head, but I dug him. I liked to think of his panels as armor.

Movie Ironhide was an insult to the G1 character with his horrible dog like face. Prime Ironhide doesn't look bad and should have been what the movie version looked like.
I'm not a fan of the Animated aesthetic or indeed any of the modern aesthetics. Plus his voice was wimpy and his character an ass.
I actually like the G1 toy since I got the 3rd party head. It's now one of my favourite Tf toys.
I am eagerly awaiting the Combiner Wars version.
The Botcon one looks nice and I've always liked the RID Spychanger.

I'm not very fond of Animated Ironhide either. Sure, he got a nice bot mode but his vehicle is pretty... unsatisfying in my book.
Leader Ironhide is indeed one of the best around. I too, miss the bulky and gimmicky Leaders of yore.
Cyberverse Prime Ironhide is also very great. It make his repaint/remold buddy Traicutter amazing too. A very, very great mold.
Personally, I much prefer the original 2007 movie voyager Ironhide over the ROTF retcon one. It's cleaner, bulkier, and if perfect on a movie shelf with the deluxes. Honorable mention should go to the HFTD deluxe. I personally don't really like it, but many people do.
Finally, I am the only one who really love the G1 mold? I don't have Ironhide but I do have Ratchet. I love his derpy look. Very "Gobotty". It's hillarious and very fun to transform. Plus, obviously the vehicle mode is perfect.

Totally agree. Energon Ironhide's only real fault is the stupid VHS. However, he's big and fun to play with. Also, I had great fun customising one. Go see it and tell me over there what you think!

1) I agree entirely with the guys on the list....just not in that order. To me, Recon Ironhide should be 1, Cyberverse Ironhide 2, Leader hide 3, animated 4 and CW 5.
2) The movie Ironhide to me did justice to the character and actually the vehicle mode is the best part of the movie design. A huge truck is just so much more imposing than a van, and the truck worked so well. Plus we was a grizzled old war vet with scars and a love for guns, and to me that fits my Ironhide very well. So really, I think Bay did justice to him and i love his movie self.
3) CW fits on there since it gives us the younger Hide to me, and he does look amazing and has an awesome head. Plus he uses the truck design, which fits him.
Overall, great list! I like it and give my stamp of approval

I DID forget about that part of the mold, and that one DOES bother me, but I stand by what I said. An interesting transformation goes much further, for me, than a really good looking bot mode. That's why I like the Ironhide/Ratchet mold, and don't much care for (and I know I'm going to get a lot of flack for this) the Brainstorm mold.

A good transformation does score big points with me too but in the end, I will preffer a crappy transformation if I can get 2 decent modes rather than a great transformation with a bad robot mode or alt mode. But that rarely happens though because a transformation resulting in a crappy robot mode usually doesnt label itself as a good transformation. The times I am thinking of when the transformationw as the better part of the toy would be with RID 2015 Sideswipe and Gen Blitzwing, whose robot modes dont hold together and arent solid so I look upon both of them quite unfavourably. Animated Leader Megatron has one of the simplest transformations ever (especially for a leader) but both modes work really well. So a toy will score major props for having a great and satisfying transformation (HFTS Bludgeon for instance) but that only compliments a toy and doesnt compensate for any negative points, at least for me.
As for all the Ironhide toys out there, here is why I didnt include them: I wouldnt recomend them to anyone. All the toys on the list I would recomend. And sadly (for all of us), CW Ironhide is the only wide release G1 themed Ironhide toy that is a decent toy. The only problem with that Ironhide is that it doesn't look too much like Ironhide. But it's still a better toy than the others. That Offroad mold is awesome and he becomes an extra limb to use in the best combiner system we have ever had where that mold is the best land vehicle limb. For playability, this toy is great!

Now let's look at the other toys mentionned that might have replaced it on the list:
G1 Ironhide: Anyone who may want this toy already has it and understands why it is the way it is. I would never recomend it to any fan of the character (unless they are curious about his origins), it just doesnt work as an actual Ironhide toy since he doesnt even have a head and unlike the G1 cartoon and the other G1 toys, the robot doesnt make up the full alt mode but rather just half of it, where the other half is a sled.

Beast Wars Ironhide: easily the worse robot mode of all Beast Wars combiner components:

Energon Ironhide: He already was on a list, the worse case of visible head syndrome list, and that is where he belongs. That stuff sprouting from the roof of the car is an eyesore:

I wouldnt recomend this toy to anyone unless they are into goofy toys (which some are, but this isnt the list for that).
Universe Ironhide: many people have said it already, but this mold is terrible and would never feature on any best of list. It doesnt even look like Ironhide that much more than any of the other G1 themed Ironhides we've had. I would never recomend anyone spend money on this mold in order to have an Ironhide toy in your collection.

HFTD Ironhide: For the movie Ironhides, the voyager is ok and I just picked the recon one because it had the most playability and a realy nice headsculpt. The deluxe HFTD toy has a neat transformation but doesnt fit anywhere in a collection and the other molds give you a better fix for the movie ironhide itch.

As for the arms micron, something went wrong with that release. You can clearly tell from this photo that Hasbro was supposed to release that ironhide mold since it makes way more sense for him to be the one weilding those cannons kup has. Since he cam in the Arms Micron line, he doesnt get the appropriate weapons nor does he get much paint deco and you are left with stickers which I dont feel do that great a job. Especially the ones on his shins that are all mirrored up and shiny, it's so odd. Plus he cant do the decent thing of having his chest be his windshield, which the Commander class figure was able to pull off, and you have to mistransform/reassemble him not to have a dumb looking panel sprouting from his back.

In the end, the list is about honouring good toys and not figuring out which bad toy is not THAT bad, which seems to be the defense for every toy not on the list.

The CW Ironhide to me is the worst of the 1984 Autobots in that run. Other than being red and having a decent head, there's little to tie him to the Ironhide (cartoon/comic model) we grew up with. He's the worst of the repaints/remolds in the entire line.
BotCon Ironhide has some flaws but is a really nice toy. The windshield is different but the fact that he's a van and also the fact that he has the additional gunner station really helps this fig.
I understand why Universe Ironhide gets some hate, especially with the Smurfy blue face. The Henkei version and the 3-pack Autobot Specialist Ironhide both have a lot better color schemes.
As for the original 1984 Ironhide, all he needs is the head kit that popped up around the time of the Encore release and he's a much nicer figure.

So I can no honestly and without a doubt confirm that my list would not change having those in hand. I wouldnt count thid aprty anyway since saying a toy is only good when you need to spend more money on an add on is the worst way to sell a toy to me, but even with the add on head, that toy still looks wrong. Believe it or not, but G1 Ironhide is far better proportionned when that seat face is seen as his actual head. Because or else the arms are just far too low and it looks terrible. Oh well, at least I got that kit for free.
Now for deluxe Ironhide, I like that toy fine, better than the first movie voyager, but everything is so dam tight. The arm keeps coming off when going back to vehicle mode and that front section with his head and abdominal area stuffed inside is so tight that it seems ready to burst. I also have a huge issue with his lack of neck. I might be doing something wrong, but both the head and torso do not lock in. The upper torso just hangs in this void detached from the lower part of the body where his pelvis and legs are, its really off.
So yeah, the toys are passable, but nothing to tunr home about. I paid 5$ for deluxe Ironhide and I am happy because I wouldnt have paid more.
