They did say you're only playing as autobots

NICE
I just hope they don't half ass the older gen versions in favor of focusing on the next gen. But at least they're actually releasing the older gen version, I suppose.

As in those 5 are the only ones you play as.
No Cliffjumper or Jazz or even Ironhide (Who makes more sense then Wheeljack)
I mean a Transformers brawler without Ironhide?

The offical press release said something about 5 difficulty levels which doesnt really make for much replay value. From what I've seen it looks more like a $20.00 arcade game rather than a full priced release but I really want to be proven wrong.
Like it was said previously, this game is very reminiscent of Madworld, another cell shaded beatemup game they made. Platinum games are usually short (less than 10 hours, closer to 5) and don't have much replay value aside from the fun of them and going back to the game having learnt new combos and getting higher scores. They have been doing this kind of games since they began. And all of them were full priced releases, but no one really complains since no one else makes games like them.Think of them as 90s Michael Bay. Every film is an event even if it doesnt have much meat to it. Same with platinum games.

Anyone else think this game is the perfect commercial for CW Titan Class Devastator?

They said you could play as those characters. They never definitively said those were the only characters you play as.

We've seen guns in use which I assume is done through locking on to a target rather than aiming like in a FPS, so it's not entirely melee.
And yeah, I think this might help sell some Devastators. Reprolables needs to make a set of "cell shaded" stickers to really give Devs that game look. I also hope we get a new G1 style Optimus, like a budget MP. No combining, no stylizing, just pure G1. Looks like they could also repaint some CHUG figures to make them look like they do in the game. I'd rebuy all of the characters from the game if they had a glossy coating and "cell shaded" paint apps.

Unfortunately they actually said those are the only 5 it was mentioned.
I could be wrong but for now the people there are saying those 5 will be the only ones playable.

Pile on what? Nothing you said has anything to do with what anyone just said. Like I said, Platinum didn't have an hand in Zone of the Enders, that was Konami themselves who developed it.
What? Why are you being so contentious? I was supporting your point.

And of course, Devastator is as oversized as his Dreamwave counterpart:

THIS!!!!
Would be awesome, with a Laser Rod Optimus Prime like head.
Which is still imho the best G1 head in the game.
Great! I think I'll enjoy that hack 'n slash gameplay.
Hopefully it's balanced with auto-aim shooting & melee.
And hopefully you can transform normally to drive around town.
From what it looks like, transforming is a simple melee
ramming move, nothing more.
I hope they throw in some sort of Escalation or waves-mode.
That always keeps me warm for another few weeks after a short
singleplayer campaign.
Looking good, me love Devastator!
I was almost worried that there'd be no more Transformers
games besides Angry Birds, cards & super deformed

Soundwave and the recordicons confirmed.
Wheeljack's playstyle sounds awesome.
>Sideswipe in ninja mode
I guess they are taking cues from everywhere, even RiD15
Posted by Insurgent on June 16th, 2015 @ 6:09am CDT
OH! Michael Bell is doing Sideswipe? That means he must be doing Bombshell and Scrapper as well! I hope! PLEASE!!!!
I was on the fence about this game, but this article has just made me go

Yes, I'm onboard, totally! (can always transform & also ranged weaponry, story & a challenge mode)
The countdown to Devastation begins.

Posted by Deadput on June 16th, 2015 @ 5:18pm CDT
And they said there is only 5 Autobots to play as in only 5 in the WHOLE GAME that's all people just a small cast of 5.
Gameplay is great but gameplay can only get you so far (talking about you Destiny and Titanfall)
Which sucks a lot especially the choice of characters
Typical Optimus
Typical Bumblebee
Typical Grimlock
Typical Sideswipe
The only change of scenery with the cast is Wheeljack and I have always hated Wheeljack.
How are they charging this "Arcade" game for $60 when it's severely lacking with reasons to actually buy it?

In fact where is he in anything besides the comics?

Chill dude, he's a fan favorite amongst adult fans, and the comics are geared towards them. Kids won't find a calculating and ruthless Autobot entertaining in a cartoon or a game.

If ruthless and calculating was any reason to exclude a character from being playable, Megatron and Soundwave wouldn't have been playable in the High Moon games.

Uhhhhh he was never ruthless in the cartoon so far the only times he has been are the comics and toy bios.
Just use the cartoon personalty (whatever that is)

And my first thought was that Megatron and Soundwave have alt modes that wouldn't work in the same way without having to change the engine to be able to do more things. I mean, soundwave could work as a stealth character, but there'd be a great deal more game design and coding required to make him work as such, and the levels would need a lot of adaptations to make them work outside the standard brawler setup.
If you're trying to keep things slavishly G1, then changing the alt modes would be a no-no for trying to work around that.
But then Meg's alt mode is revealed to be a tank in the gameinformer hands on article.
So....
...what was the thought process behind not having the playable?
EDIT: Also, gameplay video shows Lazerbeak, Ravage, Scavenger, Bonecrusher, Kickback, Bombshell and Shrapnel as bosses/enemies.

OVER-THE-TOP STYLISH ACTION
PlatinumGames' signature fast-paced action allows instant robot to vehicle attacks, slam downs, counterattacks, and infinite combos for a unique and customizable combat system.
FIVE PLAYABLE AUTOBOTS
Wreak havoc on the DECEPTICON forces as OPTIMUS PRIME, BUMBLEBEE, SIDESWIPE, WHEELJACK and GRIMLOCK.
PLAY AGAIN AND AGAIN
5 difficulty levels with overhauls in enemy composition, combined with a deep customization system, means hours of intense gameplay.
THE STORY
Optimus Prime and the Autobots face off against classic Decepticons when Megatron discovers a way to harness the enormous power of Plasma Energy to Cyberform Earth. Fueled by the Plasma Energy, the Decepticons are stronger and more powerful than ever. Can the Autobots stop them?
For those who want more meaty gameplay vieos, IGN has uploaded a ten minute gameplay demo which was shown at E3 2015.

This looks great. Really kinetic and fast-paced compared to the more 3rd person shooter-y High Moon games. I want it. Give me a demo, Activision.

Yes, its very arcadey like. All Platinum games are like this. But thats fine, we already had our more story based third person shooting game in FOC and WFC. And with a big studio like Platinum, this will introduce the G1 designs we love so much to a wholey new audience.

I'll give it a go (it is Transformers based after all) but its not grabbed me. Demo would be nice.

Gameplay baby! The meat of the game, which is how it plays, should be the most important aspect of plunking down your hard earned cash. So far, these previews do a good job of introducing a few core mechanics while whetting our appetites for more. I notice that while your driving or shooting, the character does the tried and true over-the-shoulder camera angle and switches nicely to side view for melee combat. So far looks like there are some opportunities for some massive combo attacks. Lovin' the limited character roster. What I'm about to say is total conjecture at this point, but what the heck, this is fun. So we got Optimus- a leader, Bumblebee-scout, Sideswipe-warrior, Wheeljack(!)-engineer, and Grimlock-bruiser. I would think that with the different classes here, the circumstances of combat would dictate which characters are best suited for the level. Otherwise, what's the point? You would theoretically be able to run through the whole game with the same character. In the Transformers universe, where characters are a key component of the franchises success, that would be awful.I'm curious to find out the replay value of the game. Maybe play as the Decepticons after beating the game? Unlocking characters? Two-player arena deathmatch?
So this is getting long so I'll put a cork in it. Yeah, an obvious love letter to G1 and what a beautiful message it is. Cant' wait to get my ass kicked by Devastator!
Posted by MemphisR56 on June 17th, 2015 @ 10:36am CDT
I hope it doesn't end up being too bland and samey in the enemy and arenas departments. From what we've seen, we only have 2 drone enemies, and one of them was shown in 2 flat palette swaps (orange and lilac battlechargers). It feels very much like 80's style arcade beat-em-up, so I guess that works, but recolouring enemies was something that was phased out a while back for a reason.
I'm also a little worried that combat will get too repetitive.
What I am excited about though, is customisation options. They said somewhere that each character can level and will have stats, the stats being in the same categories as the original tech-specs.
I'll be pretty cool to see how stats based on tech specs will influence gameplay, especially if their growth rates are based on their original G1 spec values.
