It's been a while since we heard about the pre-Combiner Wars Generations Protectobot Emergency Response set, which was initially reported as being an Amazon exclusive repaints of Transformers Prime and Beast Hunters Arcee, Ratchet and Prowl figures. It appears, however, that the set has made its way to a Ross store in Columbia, MD, for $19.99 - check out the photo proof from fellow fan Frere Barrett on Twitter!

Still not as cheap as what Amazon was giving it away for though this gives me hope it might come to Winners. I would love to know the stories behind how some toys find their way here. Thanks for the news!

Why would Ross think they can do better? Personally, I would not give more than $5 for it.

But in a Ross, these are good aunt-bait. You know, the aunt looking for a toy for little Billy, but doesn't really know much about the things he is into.

Online stores aren't always better in reaching some people like those afraid of computers, or the ones who simply prefer brick-and-mortar out of principle (like me).
I got my eyes on the set, but they won't the Protectobots should I get them.

When I found the sets, they had a Voyager Hound, Deluxe Lockdown and Snarl, and Power Battlers Snarl as well as Hero Mashers Starscream and Jetfire. Unfortunately PB Snarl had a BAD stress mark on his chest plate so I passed on him. Tomorrow I hunt in the Loch Raven area.

Really? Thot they were based on deluxe Beast Hunter Arcee, Ratchet and Prowl... Or is it legends, or a mix of deluxe and legends... Ratchet and Prowl look deluxe sized, anyway. Arcee (Groove) looks a bit runty. Could be one of their Cyberverse versions I suppose...

Yeah its a mix. Only Ratchet and Prowl are the deluxe molds, they used the cyberverse arcee for the other one (another legends Groove haha). So its like getting the legends mold for free, not a bad deal if you dont have any of the molds.

At 20$, you get, for the price of ONE deluxe, another deluxe plus a legend for free! That's a great deal.
Lower than that and it's like having a hot person appearing right next to you to give a bonus free... hug?

I still think the target FOC Grimlock in G1 redeco with DOTM silver knight optimus was a better deal

A FREE GOLDEN VOYAGER is really hard to beat!
Even though I got both mold already, I have no regrets having bought the set twice, one to open, one to keep sealed.

Ross used to charge about $5.99-$6.99 for a deluxe figure (even their prices have been going up). It's been a while since I saw a deluxe figures on the shelf in Ross (or any Transformers at all lately - there's been a dearth), but I think they're around $6.99-$7.99 now. I've seen Cyberverse size figures at about $5.99.
So if you assume lowest cost, then each deluxe in the Protectobot package is 6.99, the cyberverse is 5.99, which makes the package 19.97 - about spot on with the 19.99 price tag, shy two cents. Still a good deal.

CW has re-ignited my interest in collecting, and for the most part I'm only going after Decepticons.
So back whenever Generations Blitzwing was released, I passed on him multiple times.
I think partially because I wasn't sold on his look, and also because I had zero interest in whatever the main line was at that time.
But since I'm not going for any CW Autobots (except Hotspot), I'm considering going back and getting Blitzwing. I just checked out the gallery on this guy, but I'm still on the fence.
I'm leaning towards getting him since I don't have one in my collection.
But is he worth getting??

Well, he hasnt had the best of feedback:
The toy is renowned for two significant design flaws. The first is that tabs meant to anchor the robot shoulders to the chest never solidly lock into place—they are simply too far apart. This makes his shoulder assemblies swing up and out of his chest when the shoulders are rotated up. Pressing the shoulder slots into the chest tabs sometimes works to counter this, but it depends on the tolerances of each individual figure.
The second major flaw concerns the face-swapping feature; almost universally, this does not actually end up working because the rotating faces are rendered immobile by an excess of paint on the inside of the helmet, including the post the faces are mounted on.
I personally own the doubledealer version of the mold and while the thriple changer nature of the figure is nice, I really dont like how the shoulders dont tab in, it makes him all loosey goosey. Buy him if you can find a decent deal but I wouldnt pay inflated aftermarket prices for him.

If you like the character, go for it! Be aware though that he has two inherent design problems:
1) The shoulders won't lock in place due to improperly spaced tabs and slots
2) The face change gimmick can be hard to make work, due to excess paint on the inside of the helmet. The Japanese version fixes this issue.

Okay thanks...
I'm probably going to pump the brakes and put this on the back burner for now.
Especially with CW stuff coming out that I want (Combaticons), and I may be getting a Unite Warriors Defensor, depending on how soon the Combaticons are released.
Not to mention, I'm very tempted to get Apollyon.

I found the biggest problem with that figure to be getting the rubber nose cone to sit over his head properly. His head seems a bit too fat for it to tuck in under it without leaving little gaps. The Dr Wu upgrade helped a lot with this and with the shoulder issue. Nonetheless, I still love the figure and his alt modes look awesome.

Oddly enough, I've had no trouble with the head gimmick on mine. The shoulder tab issue is a different story.
I picked mine up for half off at Tuesday Morning. For that price, he was absolutely worth it. I'm not a big fan of his alt modes (neither one sits together pretty well), but he looks quite intimidating in robot mode, which is how I keep him displayed.

I'm getting almost all of the deluxe CW Decepticons, and the one exception right now is probably HotSpot... So I'll probably get him instead of Blitz.
On a different topic, saw this on Amazon:
Transformers Asia Kids Day Protectobots Evac Squad 2-Pack
Kinda cool... I like the old Inferno mold, just not sure of that color scheme they used!

Yeah, those colors are rather ill-fitting for G1 Hot Spot and G1 Blades, they are, however, more becoming of two Japanese characters that the G1 toys of Hot Spot and Blades were recolored into: Fire Chief and Fly-Up.Sowndwave76 wrote:On a different topic, saw this on Amazon:

The Combiner Wars Hot Spot, if they even started to approach G2 colors, would end up looking like a cross between Pyro and Rodimus Prime.
Actually, the more I have thought about, the more I think Pyro is the ideal third tooling of the Combiner Wars mode.
I'm not sure if the molds allow it but something I keep seeing is how the Combiner Wars retoolings would look interesting bashed together for a third and fourth repaint and bashing the toolings would avoid the problem of straight repaints.
Pyro is a fire truck with missiles and no rescue capability. Perfect for an Onslaught/Hot Spot mashup. A fire truck that does nothing but cause fires. (Onslaught weapons with Hot Spot cab.)
You'd also get interesting results from a Silverbolt/Cyclonus hybrid tooling. A variety of figures could work there. (Silverbolt head and hands on Cylconus tooling for Jhiaxus. Cyclonus head and hands on Silverbolt tooling for Dai Atlas or King Atlas as I'm sure he'd be called if he turned up at retail.)

While discount retail findings are generally not news-worthy, many collectors had difficulty finding these toys upon release late last year, especially so with Arcee. Now they're available again for those in regions with an Ollie's location, and at a fantastic price too!
Be sure to let others around you know if you see these toys by using our Toy Sightings Forum or our Transformers Toy Sightings listings. To assist with use of the latter, Ollie's has been added as a chain to the Sightings store locator. Ollie's Bargain Outlet store locations may be added by clicking this link, and you can find information on locations to add near you using Ollie's store locator. All new location listings must be approved by a site administrator such as yours truly, so please input any address information as cleanly and accurately as possible to speed up that process.
Good luck out there to anyone looking to hunt for these popular Transformers over the upcoming weekend, and be sure to help out your fellow collectors as well if you can!
