According to Deadline.com, "DreamWorks Animation is deeply engaged in two potentially game changing negotiations that could transform the company — including one with Hasbro to forge a family entertainment powerhouse to be called DreamWorks-Hasbro. The other talks are with Hearst to turn DWA's AwesomenessTV into a joint venture."
DreamWorks' Jeffrey Katzenberg would become chairman of the combined operation, the website says.

You can call it a "merger" if you want, but make no mistake about it Hasbro is buying this company.

My problem is that Disney is not trying to make anything new anymore. Yes, it's famous for breathing new life in old fairy tales but it was new life. Now, they have bought other peoples creativity and plan to milk it until we hate it. Star Wars used to be a group of special movies that were important. Now they are just a cash cow that will always been on the air or in the theaters in some way while there are still people to buy tickets. Yeah, they may be good movies, but its still a dillution.
I don't want them to own hasbro because its good for SOMETHING to not be owned by disney.

Also, whoever it was that said Disney should buy Bandai...not gonna happen. 1, Bandai is Japanese, so they're out of Disney's reach anyway. 2, Bandai is so enormous that even Disney couldn't afford to acquire them. Mickey Mouse can't defeat Gundam I'm afraid. Or Kamen Rider. Or Godzilla. Or any of the other millions of franchises Bandai owns (and unlike Disney, they don't have a reputation as insufferable legal pricks). Bandai is going to live forever- I'll wager a lot longer than Disney.

I think he was just joking about Disney buying Bandai... but you're dreaming if you think Disney can't buy Bandai. Disney is so much bigger than bandai it's not funny. Disney has a market cap of 153.51 billion dollars, Bandai 5.17 Billion

Disney is quite big, but given Bandai's location and the large amount of faith and support they have from their consumer base (coupled with the generally more independent attitude Japanese companies tend to have) I don't think Disney could buy Bandai, mainly as Bandai could easily turn them down and survive without them, and also as Disney would not have enough to gain from the buyout to compensate for the huge expenditures they'd have to make to buy them.
TL;DR: Disney COULD buy Bandai but they won't and if they did it wouldn't go well for them.

Dangers of capitalism, horrors, it's all the same. Originally it was "The Landlord's Game" demonstrating how rents enrich property owners and impoverish tenants. Eventually when monopoly was "created" the on the nose allegory was lost, but hey, it still teaches how horrific unregulated capitalism can be.

This would be a huge win for Hasbro. Dreamworks doesn't know what to do with itself. They could tap Hasbro huge catalog of intellectual property.
Toys are a waning business, kids being born now are all about virtual play, even movies are not as attractive as they were to previous generations.

I agree with you on some of those movies, but the Croods made $587 million world wide and cost $135 million to make. Also dont forget How to Train Your Dragon 2 which made $615 million and cost $145 million to make. They are not producing all hits (like Frozen)but they certainly aren't dead yet.

Then you'd be wrong. It's a poorly written, poorly animated show, dude. It's ok if you like it though. I guess. It doesn't make it good. It's just more cash-in swill.

Various reasons are the cause of the quick collapse of these talks. From a predictably negative reaction from Disney, to Wall Street analysts who deemed the $35 a share asking price from Dreamworks too steep, to Hasbro shares losing 4% on Thursday and an additional 2% on Friday. Perhaps there are some additional reasons, but the bottom line is that this deal won't be happening in this reality. You can check out the full articles about the demise of the Hasbro/DreamWorks via HollywoodReporter.com and NYtimes.com.

Still, it could have been cool to see what kind pf animated TF series that partnership may have produced. Maybe in a different life...
Posted by spiderbob007 on November 15th, 2014 @ 12:12pm CST
My suspicion is that Hasbro is really courting Disney, and their merger talks with DreamWorks and Softbank were to make their intended suitor jealous. I have read that Disney has 30% of Hasbro's business in toys; which includes Star Wars, Marvel, Disney Junior and Disney Princess. A merger between the two is probably inevitable, its just a matter of when and under what circumstances. If Hasbro can show that they are a desirable partner to competing companies, they can negotiate a better deal with Disney.
If they do merge, we can also get a collection of Marvel era Transformers comics with issue 3, featuring Spider-Man.
