Seibertronians, are you excited? The next episode of the Machinima Combiner Wars series is up, and it's good. Like, properly good. But it's still not without it's faults. Let's break it down:

We open with a dusty Colosseum-style arena. We see what is obviously the Constructicons fighting a mysterious figure, which is revealed to be Megatron himself. He beats them all quickly, and demands another challenger.
Transformers News: Re: Machinima Transformers Combiner Wars Animated Series Discussion Thread
Our First Look at Megatron

Prime arrives, saying he's not here to fight, along with Windblade, who wonders why they came all the way out to a desolate planet for Megatron.
Transformers News: Re: Machinima Transformers Combiner Wars Animated Series Discussion Thread
Windblade Watches from the Bleachers

Her City-speaker ability is again mentioned, this time by Megatron, driving that point home. Megs also mentioned how he's a big fan of her work (the killing part, that is). He rushes Prime, and Optimus has to engage the former Decepticon leader, with some of the usual mixed-in dialogue about how Prime "is nothing without the war", so on and so forth. It's actually very intriguing, as it points out interesting parts of Prime not previously divulged. This is one of my favorite parts of the series so far.
Transformers News: Re: Machinima Transformers Combiner Wars Animated Series Discussion Thread
Just Like the Old Days

Prime has a flashback mid-conversation to the Black-and-white scene we saw in some of the Trailers for the series, when Megatron tells Prime to pull the trigger, and end it. Megs then catches him off-guard with a massive blow. Windblade comes in to try and save him, but Optimus is already back up and fighting.
Transformers News: Re: Machinima Transformers Combiner Wars Animated Series Discussion Thread
Float Like A Fireflight, sting like a Bumblebee

The group talks about the Enigma of Combination for a bit, and Megatron learns that the Council is in possession of it.

Then comes one of the strangest and most out of place scenes in the entire series so far.

Windblade rather randomly and unprovoked walks up and sucker-punches Megatron to the ground. She tells him "Enough." (even though Megatron had already stopped fighting for a good few minutes, and he was making no motions to start again) and that Prime's "telling the truth", (even though Megatron hadn't shown any sign of doubt in what Optimus was saying. Heck, he didn't even have time to before he was suddenly beat to the ground.) She then proceeds to deliver almost the exact same line that Prime had just said, not only once but twice, one after another. And the times she says it sound so similar in tone that it almost seems like they accidentally put two takes of the same line in. Not only does she say it, but she says it in front of the constructicons! She literally puts the entirety of Cybertron singlehandedly in danger by saying basically straight to a combiner the one secret combiners shouldn't know! The Constructicons of course transmit this new info to probably all other combiners right away. This scene simply doesn't make sense. It's actually confusing. It's kind of a train wreck, and drags the whole episode down.

Megatron decides to be a part of the team, and the exit the arena. The old Decepticon leader decides to make fun of Prime's old catch phrase, and gives the order to Transform and roll out. The delivery (and Windblade's reaction to it) seem very out of place, especially after that last scene. It would have been better if it was delivered if Megatron had said "I've waited years to say this: Transform and roll out!" or something of the like.
Transformers News: Re: Machinima Transformers Combiner Wars Animated Series Discussion Thread
And There They go, off into the Sunset. Headed for Cybertron

So some final thoughts. This is a fairly good episode, but the main problem was the pacing. It's been a problem through the series I haven't touched on yet, but in this episode it's absolutely unavoidable. It rears its ugly head with every change of Pace, feeling, tension, or drama.

Voice acting is good in this one. I'm getting used to Windblade, Prime's good, and Megatron's actor gives a great performance, though I wouldn't peg it as Megatron. Speaking of Megs, one thing of note is that this iteration of the character lacks his arm cannon, even though the designs of the characters seem to be heavily based on G1.

The Animation is especially great in this one. It's surprisingly smooth and fluid and looks really really good. Again, there's the mouth movement issues, but I feel we're going to have to move pass those.

One point that I feel hasn't been touched upon enough is the fact that this is the first time it's referenced or shown that a combiner is actually multiple bots. It seems strange, because up until now it's been implied combiners are one, not many. This really hasn't been explained, and I'd like to know the rules.

So, you've read my opinion, make your own by watching it on Go90, and then share in the comments. Is there anything I missed? Tell us!

Megatron did have his cannon but it was int he final scene just before they transformed and rolled out, I guess he took it off to fight hand to hand in the arena.

Thanks for the link. Being in Japan, this isn't available for me, so I worked some Google search magic to find a third party solution, ahem.

Btw, could some people help me please? Which countries does the YouTube link work in? Does it work on both mobile and/or "desktop"?

I can confirm that it doesn't work for me on Android and PS3 in Japan, using both mobile and desktop user agents. I suspect that it's probably just Japan and China that it doesn't work in, as Takara owns the rights in those territories?

Anyway, did anyone think that Megatron appeared like King Robert talking to Ned Stark from the first season of GOT? I expected Megs to say "All I want to do is leave Cybertron and the Decepticons and go out and (deleted), (deleted) and drink. To hell with them all, Prime!"

You did read the posts I was referring to? Frame rate etc etc are all part of the package in a CGI flick. Whether it be BW Prime or Adventure. Just sit down, watch and be entertained is the gist of my post. Not counting the frame rate or how "limited" the lip synch etc etc. Storywise, the show is just starting, lot's more to know like those movie serials Spielberg and Lucas grew up on.

Framerate is a very legitimate thing to argue about when it's slow to the point of being distracting and detrimental to the product. We're not meticulously counting every frame of each second; the frames are so few in number we can literally see them. That's not a good sign.

As for the story 'just starting', the series is about halfway through.

And I think the point of a lot of peoples' complaints here is that they sat down, watched, and expected to be entertained... but weren't.

Given we're only 25ish minutes in of what is essentially a new series ... it's really only been one full first episode.

People set their expectations too high.

Fellow Seibertronians, in the wake of the release of Combiner Wars Episode 4 just yesterday; Machinima's Youtube Channel has put out a promotional Top Ten Combiner Wars characters video, as can be viewed below.

Most notable about this is that due to not actually having ten characters yet to make a full top ten list out of, the list includes Devastator and Victorion; hence giving us never-before-seen clips of future episodes, including Victorion landing on a structure and Devastator facing off against Megatron. Take a look and tell us what you think!

It's also very confused on continuity. Computron was shown to be created by the council in Episode 1, yet the guys here give the G1 Cartoon backstory.

When do they say he was created by the council in episode 1? They mention he was loyal to them in later episodes, but I wasn't aware they said he was created by them.

Must have remembered wrong... in any case, it seems the intention is that they were created by the council, hence why they'd be loyal in the first place and why Menasor would know.

This... This top-ten characters video is a complete and utter joke! There are literally only eleven characters in this who have any dialogue, and of those eleven, four of them (all the female ones, sadly) are newer ones whom the average G1 Joe wouldn't know of offhand due to their having been made in recent years. And of those four, of course the Mistress of Flame gets omitted for her not being a fighter in this (being a boring politician instead) and having no actual name (just a title), while Windblade's being the central protagonist requires her inclusion, and Victorion's being a more-special-than-special Combiner also requires her own inclusion, which leaves Maxima to be included by mere process of elimination and the need to round out the total to ten. Thus, this video is less of an actual "top-ten" and more of "these seven 1980s G1 characters in the order we remember them from least to most, plus three of the four new girls tossed in for marketing and numbering reasons." >:oP

Also, boo to putting Optimus at the #1 spot. For once, Megatron totally deserved that spot.

And they talked about Megatron turning into a gun in this video when mere moments later they show footage from episode 4 of him turning into a tank! Ugh.

1st 20 minutes of intros? Halfway already? How many episodes are we in for anyway?

And again with the production values. The moment Hb contracted the company to animate the story in serial format should already have given hints on how much budget was allocated to the show.

The company may want to have added more but if the budget they were given is limited (Hb being skinflints?) so corners are sure to be cut. Which goes back to my Pixar analogy. Lower your expectations. Eat the popcorn and enjoy (or hate the show). Heck, this kind of reminds me of Takara's TFGo! Compare that to this, which is better?

Go! is. Go! has a vastly better framerate for its robot characters than this show does, and the sad thing is that both this show and Go! were animated by the exact same company, Tatsunoko Production, who has previously done countless animated works of animation quality ranging from good to amazing. This show, however, has incredibly choppy animation for all of its robot characters, with only the backgrounds and camera movement being the only things decently animated in this. When everything except the characters that a show focuses on looks decently animated, then there's something wrong there.

Poor Mistress of Flame didn't make it over a character that had one line , then died

So basically...if these guys were in charge of the NFL...30 of the 32 teams would make it in the playoffs each season

Correction, two characters that had one line then died. (Maxima, Computron), plus one that had a couple lines then died (Menasor) #-o

To be honest, when they said 10 was Maxima, I thought "Really? Her?" but then I thought "Hey, maybe this is the chance to gain some more backstory or info on her" but nope. We know now exactly what we knew before: She's a throw-away character who had tons of wasted potential.

I know most people think Computron is dead, but I thought the flickering in his eyes at the end of the episode was indication he is still alive somehow...of course this would be the series not to answer that question. I know Rodimus mentioned Computron's demise, (how he would know about this...I don't get either) but then...why the flickering lights? *signs of life* IMHO.

The frame rate issue is really perplexing. Sometimes it's fine, then it goes all wonky. Too late to fix it now, it's all rendered and in the can.

I really liked the dialogue with Megatron. It's like he's a normal guy having a conversation with a couple of drama queens.

As the for the Steve and Larson thing, it looks more like a promo thing more than anything. They're still funny guys though, I usually enjoy their other Top 10s.

Nothing is really "wrong" based on the situation you mentioned. Again back to the most important thing. Budget. Budget allocated for this "advertisement". If Hb committed let's say $ 5,000,000 then we get that much worth of visual bliss. If Hb committed $10,000,000 then we get that same amount in production values etc etc.

Tatsunoko even back during the original Macross also subcontracted and cut corners. Hence we got a mix bag in the SDF Macross saga in terms of animation quality (had some errors in the editing too during the first few episodes, the uncensored non Macek versions). Same with the legendary Gatchaman. The first season had minimum corners cut while 2nd and 3rd had a lot of reusing etc etc.

Tatsunoko was more or less subcontracted for the cheapest services they could offer and TF seems not to be their "in house" love child.

As for the story 'just starting', the series is about halfway through.

And I think the point of a lot of peoples' complaints here is that they sat down, watched, and expected to be entertained... but weren't.

I did lower my expectations though. Like I said after the first episode; I wasn't expecting to be blown away by it, I wasn't expecting anything amazing, I was just expecting something mildly decent and entertaining and I didn't even get that.

People have differing levels of satisfaction. Some are easy to please other aren't. Same old same old. That's what being human is.

Being done on the cheap doesn't excuse the framerate from still looking bad.

Cyber Missions had a vastly better framerate than this and look at how stupidly cheap and unflattering it looked (there isn't even any mouth movement, even for those who have visible mouths, like Megatron with his mouth stuck being always hung open):

Computron was created by Grimlock?

I've never been able to come to terms with this.

I've read quite a bit of flame about how Windblade is nothing like her IDW counterpart.
How all of a sudden she's grumpy, powerful and swings a blade like a badass.
She's not the sweet, optimistic girlbot we all supposedly know from the comics.

Has it never occurred to anyone that maybe we don't know her all that well?
Maybe she was chosen for not only her compassion and empathy?
Hotshot is supposedly a City-speaker, and he has never been portrayed as anything but a pew-pew, fight, punch, kick guy.
A WARRIOR.

:-?

AND
people change.
Especially when something happens that pushes one too far.
Something that makes one mean and angry.

She seems mean
And angry.

Something's changed.
Something has happened.
She is not the girl we knew.

She isn't attending to Metroplex.
She isn't being attended by Chromia.
She isn't who we thought we knew.
She's been hurt by something horrible.

All we can do is wait
And see.

In an ideal world we would have wished that but tell that to the renderers.

You do realize that the cost to render Cyber missions a year or so ago has increased? Prices/costs don't remain static. That's what you call inflation. You also have to factor the change in foreign exchange rates

I'm imagining this setting...........

Tatsunoko: Hey peeps (manager who will assign the in house group who will render the show), we's got a contract from gaijin Hb to animate their combiner war product

Manager: 'sama.....how much we gonna get out of this? What's the budget?

Tatsunoko: Contract has it for US$ 5,000,000

Manager: $ 5,000,000 only? I guess it's team Shoshinsha who'll handle it. No need to bother the in house senmonka.

Tatsunoko: Make sure those whippersnappers don't go the full monty. Budget is only $ US 5,000,000. If we get a second season and a higher budget maybe we could add more bells and whistles......

The only thing I basically like about this Combiner Wars show is the character modeling. The characters look like I feel they should.

The dialogue is bad. G1 tv-show bad. Maybe worse. The voice actors' tones do not react properly to one another. Megatron's delivery is great, but it has no impact on the other characters.

The fight action makes no sense, physics-wise. This show's physics makes less sense than a six-year-old throwing their toys around.

And why the bleep-boop-bleep for the Constructicon voices? Are they that profane?

The G1 episode it happened in featured an accident where Grimlock got a ton of information and intelligence flown straight into his brain. He later created the Technobots and, to go back to his status quo, transferred the intelligence to them and Computron and went back to his usual self.

Yeah, what I find really awesome is how some of the designs are pulled straight from the toys. You literally see some of your toys come to life. I especially felt this when Rodimus was conversing with Starscream, you can see your MP 09 Rodimus toy just walking about.

I feel exactly the same way about the "Devastation" video game that came out a while ago. I have absolutely 0 interest in the game itself, but the character models (mostly all based off of Masterpiece) Are really really cool. I think I even said something like that on here when the trailer first dropped.

Anyway, yeah. I enjoy the character models, they had a lot of potential. Unfortunately it got dragged down by the Dialogue, Mouth sync ( :BOOM: :HEADHURTS: ), and pacing.

I haven't had an issue with the animation or anything, and my original complaints are being ironed out with the story going forward, especially thanks to Megatron

framerate seems fine here.

In spite of its flaws, I am looking forward to each episode. I wish they were longer....

So far Megatron is the best part of the series. He had character, his lines were delivered with avidity, and he had some enjoyable quips in his scenes, a nice change from the angst-filled 'protagonist's' recycled complaints of combiners' apparent ruination.

Myself as well, if they were longer there would be more time for a healthy combination of exposition and action, and more time to introduce the characters.

Windblade is just.... Ugggghhhh.... So terrible.

Megatron was better acted than anyone so far, but his lines are awful. The writer of this show can't write, at ALL, they should find a new job, because writing isn't for them.

I was so looking forward to this series and so hoping it would be on the quality of G.I.Joe Resolute and it simply isn't even close.

We're halfway through the show and we still have no idea WTF is really going on or why things are the way there are.

So much potential, so crappy.

IDW did a better job and their books are almost as bad as the G1 Marvel garbage....

>:oP You could do better?

I certainly could write something better by far. So yeah, with proper animation people, and GOOD voice actors, I could do better, A LOT better.

It's always great to see animation models that accurately reflect the toys or vice versa. Makes it feel more genuine to me personally and like you are a part or have a piece of the action as well.

That Bot wrote:I feel like the only person on this website who doesn't have any issues with the animation framerate. It seems fine to me.

You got to admit though that their animation style is a little choppy at least? I mean I see why people are criticizing it. It isn't very smooth totally. I think the reason for this though is more a stylistic and possibly rendering choice though.

Going to take in that bolded part of the quote for a moment due to my fanaticism for Megatron. ;)

*breathes in deeply*

There we go... :P

That's actually my complaint, I wish the episodes were longer and had a bit more exposition and action to them. The story is pretty straight forward in the way they're telling it when its not just random bouts of action. Since they changed the continuity for this it wouldn't hurt for them to add a bit more exposition to carry it though.
