Articulation
The new articulation is broken down with a stock image of the Hasbro version first so that you can see the change right after. You will see that the shots showing the Takara version have the Constructicons holding their own individual weapons, which are unique to each Constructicon. This inclusion is one of the main extra features of the Takara set.
Elbows on Longhaul

Elbows on Scrapper

The elbows do lock for combined mode so there is absolutely no stability issue either now or down the line due to their inclusion.

Hasbro's elbow is preserved, making it a double elbow.

They call him Master, Mixmaster
Different knee joint for Scavenger
Hasbro
Takara
You can see here how the ball joint is replaced by an extra piece connected on a mushroom peg. This makes the knee bend at the actual knee and not the lower thigh. It also provides a slight increase in articulation. This is also present on Bonecrusher.
Different knee joint for Bonecrusher
Hasbro
Takara
Notice how the pelvic area is tabbed in correctly. If you hear the click, it will be rock solid and not undo itself when playing with or posing the figure. This seems to be an issue Takara fixed (at least on my version). As shown with Scavenger, the knee joint is different. However, while the knee bends at the correct area, the final result looks about the same when the knee is bent at 90 degrees, which you can see below.
Takara
I am unaware if the different knee will help achieve any new poses that people have been wanting to do. For those interested, this is explored further in the conversation we had on the Seibertron forum.
Devastator
New Head
The head lets you switch from one look to the next.
Ratcheted armpits/shoulders
I don't know what to call this specific joint but this is the joint used when extending Devastator's arms outward. It is ratcheted now, by having the connector pieces of Scavenger and Bonecrusher ratcheted, and helps counter gravity when doing poses that extend Devastator's arms so that they do not fall.
Mixmaster's cab
Mixmaster's alt mode has been the most controversial element of Generations Devastator due to the orientation of the cement drum being reversed compared to the original (since it is supposed to resemble a bigger cement mixer). This means that the front of the Hasbro version has more paint apps than the cab found in the back. Takara doesn't seem to fully agree with this change as evident in the mount of paint applications they added to that back cab.
Hasbro
Takara
You will notice that Takara included a faction symbol on this cab. This is important since this would make it the only faction symbol not facing forward head on if Mixmaster was oriented the Hasbro way. Scrapper himself has his faction symbol facing forward by being in his shovel, unlike the Hasbro version, adding to the theme of the placement of the symbols. Also, the individual guns can be placed on the alt modes to give each vehicle an offensive edge. Mixmaster's is placed on that back cab which would have his gun facing away from the action if he were oriented like Hasbro intended.
The intended orientation becomes very evident in a group shot. Here is the SDCC version of Hasbro's Devastator:
Here is Takara's and you tell me what works best.
This:
Or this:
To conclude, here is a rundown of the major changes with Takara's Devastator (UW-04):
6 unique individual weapons
New parts for improved articulation on all Constructicons (knees, elbows or double elbows)
Purple hands for Devastator
New tooling for Devastator's head to switch from visor to visor-less look
Ratchets when extending Devastator's arms outward
Different choice and distribution of paint applications (especially on Bonecrusher's robot mode and Mixmaster's alt mode)
Painted rims

The silver truck "fuel tank" is on the top of the arm, while on Takara's:
The "fuel tank" is purple and on the bottom of the forearm. This draws my attention to the fact that the Hasbro photo shows the left and right arms swapped. Is this the case for all Hasbro CW and SDCC Mismasters? Does this mean Hasbro had to misassemble the forearms to get them to work?
Posted by Cobotron on December 20th, 2015 @ 12:12pm CST
Maybe that Hasbro photo is of a miss-assembled prototype.

A side by side comparison to compare deco was already newsed last week: http://www.seibertron.com/transformers/ ... nes/34370/
This is not a comparison, just a round up of the new added features and the Hasbro pics are just there for everyone to recall how that version did it. There will be a full blown comparison by Seibertron in the traditional gallery style coming at the beginning of the new year, so stay tuned!
Cobotron wrote:Wow Ag, it looks like his fists are upside down on the Hasbro. The first finger protrudes out in a "trigger grip" sort of way, but on the Hasbro version, his pinkies protrude. Tea, anyone?

Yup, the stock photo is missasembled. Here's another pic I found of Hasbro's which shows that he is fine. Still Ag pointed out something no one pointed out before, another victim of the brilliant stock photo team

I know this may seem a bit "silly" to say but I just had a dream this morning about doing something illegal to take pictures of UW Devastator in a staff only area. I hope nobody got these "in-hand" pics from such methods as that!
But in all seriousness, I am hoping to get an MP Optimus Prime and CW Megatron with an upgrade kit to make him bigger, so I can have them next to UW Devy like in the cartoon and comics. I am so tempted tho to get that Dr. Wu Mixmaster to combine with Devy, since UW Mixmaster looks kinda crappy in design.

I'm curious if any of you have come across any QC issues with the figure. I just received my copy today and noticed a few issues immediately.
First of all Devastator's left forearm, which is composed of a missile pod, was loose at the wrist where it locks into place. The space was too wide so the hinge the wrist was on was loose. Thankfully, a few seconds under a blow dryer and some shaping alleviated that problem.
The left wrist is looser than the right one but it still locks for me.
Second, the elbow on my Hook are stuck and I'm afraid to force them to bend. Anyone have any suggestions? It goes without saying that I don't want to break my copy of this figure so soon.
Which elbow, he has two. The further one down (in the outside of the shell) was easy to unpeg. I understand that the inner elbow stuck to the shell were tricky to pose but not stuck. I just move them using the other elbow joint (which protrudes).
Thirdly, and this goes for all owners of Devy, I found a stress mark on one port near the crane where Devastator's head assembly should click into place.
A visit to Seibertron's gallery of SDCC Devastator helped me determine that port is in fact warped. This prevents Devy's head from sitting flush. Any thoughts or advice?
This one took me a while to figure out what you were referring to. And I realized why, its because his head sits flush with mine. I do not see any stress marks.
In the end, I quite like this figure as Devastator. Scrapper and Scavenger are my favourite individual constructicons since they actually feel like good decent voyager toys. The rest have a cheap quality too them. And Bonecrusher is a really crappy figure. I hate him as much as deluxe Breakdown (they have a similar dumb problem). Devastator is definitely better than the sum of his parts. A good toy, but I dont know if I would call him the year's best. I dont like the arm locking pegs (both the ones on the chest piece and the Longhaul forearms, which always unpeg) and I would have really liked the gun to peg in his hand. Was it so hard to put a small groove next to his thumb so that the gun peg could peg in there?! I would have also liked the ports to be the same on both arms. Its not hard to implement and could have added a small bit of diversity ala Predaking who can switch his arms around if you want.
Great legs though! Here he is combined (really hard to keep him all in the frame, so I didnt)
Thanks to al for the helpful advice. With some careful maneuvering, I have gotten my United Warriors Devastator to function as he should.
After some time under a blow dryer and being extremely careful, I was able to bend the port back to a functional shape. As frustrating as it was to have to work on him right out of the box, there is a sense of achievement to be able to get him in proper working order.
Great figure and an amazing update to the original Devastator. Can't recommend him enough.

possible
1. reuse of brawl or Rook moulds with drill/sonic cannon for nosecone
2. reuse of Breakdown or wildrider moulds for lightspeed
3. retool of arielbot for strafe
4. cheet with second arielbot, or retool of UW groove for afterbreaker
5. or else repaint the legends groove as afterbreaker

I DON'T CARE about these issues. They are not enough to keep me from getting this UW version. If anything I mostly want him for the purple hands.
I am not really that upset about Bonecrusher, cuz even though he has the crotch issue (seek a doctor), he still LOOKS pretty good, and if I need to I'll find a way to customize it to fix it as best as possible. (Like I did with Generations Springer to keep the tabs on the gun from breaking from yanking it out of the front of the chopper mode. All they had to do was make the tabs shorter and there would be no stress marks.)
I personally sometimes enjoy sanding parts and fixing little bits so it doesn't bug me. Even if Bonecrusher has this problem, it's not the biggest issue for me. Bonecrusher is supposed to be the tough guy, and he looks kinda scrawny in this set.
I never was one to complain about the individual bots too much if they are all voyagers. I always end up picking favorites and kinda forgetting about the other guys till combined. Really, this Unite Warriors Devastator looks just as impressive as G1 Devastator did to me some years ago. (I always wanted that guy. )

1. Brawl has an alternate drill part, as shown by TFCC Ram Horn. So he gets to be retooled into Nosecone, as Rook already has a reshell: Swindle/Hound
2. Wheeljack has the same basic profile as Lightspeed in Vehicle Mode.
3. Question is, which one? Firefly has no reshell yet, so I guess he'll be picked? Or maybe Blast Off?
4. Afterburner will be a problem, yes... hopefully TT has had the foresight of preparing an alternate shell for Groove.

As for QC problems with UW Devastator, I haven't noticed many. The shoulder and thigh ball joints on Scavenger are loose on mine. I tightened the shoulders but left the thighs alone for now as they're not loose enough to make him not stand or anything. The shoulders though were so loose that he really couldn't hold his weapons outward, especially the launcher. The only other things I did was I tried to tighten the knee joints on Long Haul for combined mode. I was getting a little tired of those knees moving before the actual hips when moving Devastator's legs forward. I also loosened up one of the outward hip joints for Long Haul/Devastator. It kept making a really nasty sound as I would move it outward. When I opened it up to see what was going on in there I decided to file down a little bit of plastic on the ratchet notch. The way it's designed, I felt that it could snap over time just due to how large the hollow piece in the middle is to give the ratchet it's flex. Kinda like some Megazord ratchets, namely the shoulders for the Timeforce Megazord. Now the leg moves outward smoothly and easily compared to before and it doesn't have that nasty sound anymore. Some of the other hip joints are a little looser than I'd like but nothing worth fixing yet. Especially with them being disc joints and those aren't as easy to fix as ball joints. Oh and the Devastator's left forearm didn't want to peg in securely to Bonecrusher so I tightened that peg up a bit.
Overall I love the set. I would've been just as happen with the Hasbro version had it released before we knew what Takara was doing but that wasn't the case here. Takara definitely knew what they were doing when they made their announcement. The wait hurt a bit especially when I walked into Toysrus a few times with a coupon and enough money to buy Devastator and had to pass.
Just for fun I had RID 2001 Landfill out and about and he just gets smaller and smaller with every passing year. Long Haul is just a little bit shorter than Landfill at the head but is bulkier overall. I still wish I hadn't passed up on the the RID 2001 and the Energon Devastator repaints the only times I ever seen them in stores though. It would've been fun to have all three of the more modern "G1" Devastators together. Sure I have the Micromaster version but he's not so much fun. I also regret passing up on the "G1" colored ROTF legends Devastator. I just couldn't justify the price when I seen it on the shelves. It also seemed to keep getting MORE expensive every time I seen it too. If I had known about it, I probably would've picked up the PCC set as well but I didn't know much about them at the time and never seen it in stores.
I would totally buy an Autobot colored Devastator. Scavenger as Grimlock, Hook as Hightower, Bonecrusher as Wedge, Long Haul as Heavy Load with some G1 Landfill influences, Mixmaster as Quickmix and Scrapper as Scoop. Or something like that. I just really enjoy this Devastator and I would like another version that's not just a G2 version. Although, I would like to get at least one of the two G2 colors as well. Maybe it could be released as six voyagers at retail as it would be the same price but that would most likely never happen. Especially with Titans Return coming up. And for those wondering about Long Haul being released as a voyager, they did release those "upsized" cyberverse commanders as voyagers even though they stand eye to eye with the current leader class which is about as large as Long Haul is overall.
I just want more of this Devastator is all.

and IMO, to me these changes feel unnecessary. They're not needed, especially if you're just gonna get the set for Devy. I can't believe fans are big enough babies to make Takara put in set for individual bots that won't even be displayed. You can enjoy or hate the individual bots, but chances are the combined mode is the only thing that'l be displayed on your shelf.

I don't have room for combined mode. When they are displayed, they'll be in individual mode. Tis one of the biggest reasons I waited for UW. I have nothing against the Hasbro version, but the elbows and weapons are a very nice touch from Takara, and worth it in my opinion.

It's been redesigned already so what's the issue? There's the Hb version with the static elbows. TT just wanted to add extra icing on the cake.So if there's another option for the consumers to get an improved version then by all means.......Capitalism at work.

Nope. You're no baby. Just a patient fan/collector like me who has extra disposable income for the shipping costs.
Really now, why make issue for some mold improvements over a product that is technically the "SAME" cost over the Hb product? It's only the shipping that kicks us in the gut. I see green.....well light yellow green here.....

I was actually planning on getting the Hasbro version until UW Devs was announced. I don't mind the limited articulation, but I prefer the better version. I don't think it's the fandom that were big babies, but Takara who wanted to make UW Devy as close to MP as possible, which is what he's supposed to be in scale with.

Technically, Hasbro's is the changed one. Though Hasbro's came first, the stuff in the Takara version that the Hasbro version lacks was in Takara's original plans for the toy, but were taken out of Hasbro's release for budgetary reasons. Takara simply put back in what Hasbro had had removed.Agregor wrote:How does Scrappers elbow thing work?

I care about scale. And when you have as much money invested in a properly scaled classics collection as I have, an extra large, big for the sake of being big Devy is not an option. I don't play with my figures, so I have no need for the up-sizing unless the character is portrayed that way in the G1 cartoon. (my preferred continuity)
You endorse the word "official" and express interest in Dr. Wu's replacement Mixmaster all in the same post.
Obviously you aren't satisfied with certain aspects of the "official" Devastator either. Hasbro's just a toy company that owns a bunch of 30 year old copyrights and trademarks. Most of the people who had anything to do with the creation of G1 in the 1980's are no longer on Hasbro's payroll. I hate when people use the word "official" thinking they're defending the actual creators of G1. All they're defending are a bunch of corporate executives that inherited somebody elses legacy. That's why I support everybody, not just the owners of the brand.

Yup, I was gonna write this. If someone wants the unchanged version, they should go for the Takara one. This is one of the few wide retail Hasbro figures of the past ten years to be designed by Takara. For that alone, I wanted the complete experience. However, I completely understand if anyon preffers owning the modified Hasbro version.
Also, one of my main joys in this toy is transforming him and building him up which means I deal with all modes as much and would very much appreciate that they all look good. Spending money on an expensive toy for only 1 decent mode doesn't make any sense to me. But thats just me.

Durroth, I agree on the double elbows. It would look perfectly fine if it was a straight piece, making a nice elbow. But at the same time, I wont downplay added playability. I do find it fun how Mixmaster can look all double 07
That issue with Scavenger's arm also bugs me and it took me a while to realize I wasnt doing anything wrong.
I dont have any issues with Scrapper though and that piece never came off. The way I undo his elbow is I apply pressure where it is needed and keep a finger over the opposite side. It both makes it easier to undo and nothing comes off.

The purples and greens match well enough, if there is a difference, I cant see it.

I also just noticed here that even the hand mold on Longhaul is different than Hasbro.

I hate it when people say "crap" to official figures and go with 3rd party figures all the time. WHO CARES about scale with other combiners eh? It's a great design, and it scales PERFECTLY with the Combiner Wars Megatron, which I think is what they were going for. I don't mind 3rd party, but only to an extent. I like upgrades for official figures and stuff, but I am not planning to get many 3rd party combiners in the future with MAYBE the exception of DX9 War in Pocket Hulkie.
Fair enough, but I still think Hercules is a rip-off. UW and CW Devastator scales WAY better with Masterpiece figures than Hercules ever could, cuz he's too damn small (And more expensive). The least expensive price I've seen for Hercules is $449.95, and he's not even g1 accurate. If you want g1 accuracy, go with UW or CW Devastator. Again, something that's like half the size of $200.00 UW Devy is double the price at about $400.00 with less accuracy to the look of him in fiction, and that's worth it? Again, Masterpieces are meant to be in scale with this guy, and Hercules is too small for that. I'm not gonna stop you obviously from getting Hercules, but that's just my thoughts on it.

Scale was never consistent in the original cartoon, but this titan class Devastator is actually much closer to the correct size compared with the Classics figures released to this point than any of the other Combiner Wars/Unite Warriors combiners, which are actually undersized compared to the rest of the Classics line.

Thats right, yes, they are underzised because in the cartoon, the combiner was always bigger than the sum of his parts, which understandably cannot happen with toy. So in combined form, Devastator is far more in scale but of course the individual constructicons are a bit too big.

Let's keep it about Unite Warriors.

Ok, I have a question about this toy. Hasbro's version has a few less pieces to reduce cost and I am wondering now if they had released this unite warriors version as an exclusive retail edition (TRU for instance) charging 180$ and another more wide releases of the standard version at the same price (159$), what would everyone here have chosen? My question is deep down, if both were presented to you and you didnt have to go out of your way to get it, but one was 20$* more than the other, would any of you have preffered saving that extra 20$?
*I think 20$ is a more than fair enough estimate for the mark up to counter any added cost by Hasbro, especially when Takara incurred a higher production cost than Hasbro but still sold it at a similar price (using the same currency) in their own market.

If I could grab one at tru, I'd definitely get the UW version - easy answer, just for the sheer improved design of the figure.

Comes down to availability for me.
For once, I KNEW I could get this figure semi-locally (as in an hours drive away). If both were available semi-locally? Again, comes down to the combined form. And both look fine to me.
So either or I guess.

I’m not into Masterpiece scale. I do CHUG scale so Im good with this:
Obviously some here do not share my opinions. To each their own. But Im very happy with my Hercules. While Hasbro’s mold might be more cartoon accurate aesthetically, the scale harmony with other existing figures just isn’t there. Scale is worth every penny to me.

I really like the look of Scavenger (the excavator); so much so, that, if he had been released individually, I would have just gotten him, and left the rest of devastator...
