If we stop at step 20, we get the "submarine" which is a sneaky way of including a nod to the original figure's gun mode, but it's still not the finished alt mode, thus is not official. Besides, using said inverted "submarine" mode, the handle for the "gun" mode is way too small. I know that logic also eliminates his robot mode without the extra pieces, but since we did see that in the Netflix show, it is official.
Sabrblade's explanation of this figure being a remnant of the PoTP line does make a lot of sense and gives good reason for why Shockwave got this treatment.
But you DO have to admit that this "complete" step 20 was clearly intended and was designed specifically this way. You can't call that an "half-assed fan mode." You could say the same about MP Starscream 3.0 and MP Skyfire Gerwalk modes.
It's like Siege/Kingdom Ultra Magnus. The truck can be on its own without the parts, even if it looks weird with those arms hanging out.

I was holding onto hope that 2024 would be better than 2023 for Bayverse stuff since we only have a single core repaint in the mainline for the entireity of this year, and hopefully we'll see more Bayverse at the end of 2024, but that lineup is super disappointing to see.
Like, I could tolerate 86 when we were still getting a handul of Bay figures a year (like 2022) but now between 86 and the WFC games for some reason, we're down to getting a single core figure a year when we still have a big part of the Bay roster to get through.
It's difficult to say because it didn't pan out when I said it recently for 2023, but man, I have to hope there's more Bay stuff at the end of 2024.
Everything you said.
I really hate the direction of Studio Series right now.
EvasionModeBumblebee wrote:-Kanrabat- wrote:Hell yeah Mohawk and LEADER TLK Megatron!
Let's hope they will not mess this Megs up. Forget the "fat" AoE leader. Take cues from the stellar voyager and iron out the kinks.
I hate to rain on the parade because I'd like it for it to be TLK as well, but consensus from those who found the listings is that it's 86 despite being labeled as being from Bumblebee.
The disappointment levels i feel are off the charts. Why do we need a G1 Megatron in SS.

Yeah, definitely more than a half-assed fan mode, sure. I'll even say that it's splitting hairs, but if the submarine mode was intended official, they would have stopped with the instructions there, and gave a separate set for the extra kibble.-Kanrabat- wrote:Rodimus Prime wrote:But it still requires the extra pieces, does it not? Forgot to mention that it's the same thing with Commander Rodimus Prime. The car can be on its own as "Beefy Hot Rod."
Also, Your instructions argument hold no ground because Shockwave could not stand on his own without the "super armor."

Same. My MP-5 Megatron I got from HLJ had an orange rubber stopper in the barrel, my Encore Megatron (also from HLJ) had an orange cap over the barrel that was glued on the inside, but still popped right off (though the crusty glue is still inside. And my MP-36 Megatron that I think came from AmiAmi had nothing. None of the three had issues coming in.

That mold is done and over with. Hasbro dev team said their plans for the next Soundwave is a new mold at the same size as Voyager Blaster.
What are the chances the new SS mystery Rumble is the WFC/FOC version?

But he does. And as I pointed out before, his robot mode is exempt because it appears in the WFC series, making it an official representation. However, his alt mode does not, so we're left to rely on the instructions as official guidance.-Kanrabat- wrote:Also, Your instructions argument hold no ground because Shockwave could not stand on his own without the "super armor."
As for why do we need gun Megatron in SS? Because whether it's liked or not by some, SS86 exists and it keeps producing the most screen-accurate versions of G1 figures, and in G1 on screen Megatron was a gun.
It's understandable why it is frowned upon these days, hence my high interest in a foreign release exclusive to circumvent the restrictions in the US. As for the MPs being adequate substitutes, are they in scale? MP-05 isn't. MP-36? If so, then fine. That can be the Megatron to represent him from the animated film. Still shorthands the SS86 line itself, but at least there's a figure for him.
Now onto commander Ultra Magnus.
1st, let me say that I disagree with MP-22 needing an update. It's a pretty darn good figure to this day. Can it be updated? Probably. The engineering has advanced since its release. But it's not necessary.
2nd, I also don't think CC Magnus can be done without the white Prime, for budget reasons as well as my belief that if there will be a CC Magnus it will be a retool for either another Prime with a (better) trailer, or the next iteration of Powermaster Prime.
Having said that, I think Magnus should be done as a single figure, because that would be truly accurate.
Posted by -Kanrabat- on February 18th, 2023 @ 3:17am CST
For me, The Siege mold is absolutely perfect because it's "Cybertronian" and it just works. However, the Kingdom retool is horrendous. There is not enough difference between the bots of Siege and Kingdom, while the vehicle feels grossly incomplete. However, that mold works surprisingly well for SHATTERED GLASS UM. Having that derpy vehicle for the Evil Magnus just works IMO.
As for Megs, I think he has been completely "written off" his gun mode since years and years. Takara could make Gun Megs, but if Hasbro ever do it again since that surprise Reveal The Shield Legends, I'd be very, VERY surprised.

I get that this was basically a release for the WCF Netflix show and they could possibly make a better version for Commander Class, I just rather have known ahead of time so I could have saved the $50 on Kingdom and just put it towards this new version. If indeed it turns out to be so much better.
I only recently got into the line because of how good the bots looked in Siege/ER compared to past versions of the early 2Ks or earlier. They finally looked like decent representations of the characters seen on screen, and some of them carried over to Kingdom with a fee great Highlights such as Blaster for example. To think that in a few years they'll redo them in the next class up for a more accurate look and to soak extra cash out of me for something I already have is asinine IMO.
The kicker, you can't wait for that better version because it may never come for the bot you're wanting it for, and in the mean time if you don't buy the existing one you'll end up paying through the nose later on when no longer at retail.

My only beef with Kingdom Magnus is that there's a section of the trailer missing for some bizarre reason, exposing the egregious "truck arms". The cherry on top is the two missing guns. At least the SG version compensate with a sword, a fan/sucker thing, and an extra head.

I do hope to see a new TLK Bumblebee in the future that uses the engineering upgrades from this figure, especially with the chest. Not sure if a reshell would work or not since none of the alt mode parts could be reused because of how different the shaping and detail is on that version of the Camaro.
We're not 100% sure if the rerelease of TLK Bee as SS-25 counts as definitive or not, but since the rerelease of High Octane Bee as SS-79 is not considered definitive by Hasbro and a new version is still on the table, it's possible we could get a new TLK Bee too.

Also regarding the Shockwave alt mode discourse, in addition to the instructions thing, he was also the only Siege Leader to not advertise their unarmored alt mode on the box or in stock photos as well, which does seem to add to the idea that it was excluded intentionally.

The designers told us in recent behind the scenes post. They got free reign to make up alt modes for the little guy, hence they turned him into a target master of sorts (and a cannon for scourge's alt mode)

LOL!
But to be fair, a huge corporation is like a 10km long heavy freight train. It's going strong but it's slow to start and slow to stop. Changing direction can't be instantaneous either.
But if anyone is paying attention, DOES listen to feedback and improve steadily over the years. In my over 13 years of collecting, some things got "worse" but the good things overshadowed the bad by a large margin.
Among the best:
-- We have so many "Mini Masterpieces" in Generations and Studio series.
-- Many characters that were never properly remade since G1 finally got their update.
-- Scale now matters, at least for the bot modes.
-- Botcon and FunPub are no longer a thing, being replaced by way more accessible store exclusives and the Select line.
-- The overall engineering is often mind-blowing.
The only true negative is the overall prices increase but that's a thing that affects everything so...

For the record, BotCon was un-licensed for the first eight years of its existence. It wasn't until 2002 that Hasbro finally gave it the official Transformers license. This current situation is basically like how it was before, only without the convention-exclusive official Hasbro/Takara-made Transformers toys, which was not everyone's main draw for attending. For many, the experience itself, and the friendships people made with each other, was the main reason for attending.Rodimus Prime wrote:From what I've seen its a continuation in name only.
Speaking as one who did attend, those BeastBox toys are high quality and very intricate. And the events were no different than in the Fun Pub years: Voice actor panels, TF toy panels, TF lore panels, autograph sessions, a script reading, a cosplay contest, customization classes, raffle drawings, and more. Pretty sure he meant Botcon as an official Transformers convention partnered with Hasbro since 2002.
The kinds of Transformers exclusives we'd get then are now the kind we get in those Buzzworthy multipack sets.

He's a big boy. But a simple one. His transformation is very reminiscent of that big "deluxe" Transmetal Cheetor. But in cheeta mode, he's seriously limited in articulations. Other than that, he's pretty awesome.

I was really thinking mainly of the corporate aspect of it I guess. I understand there are a lot of different facets to a convention. Not exactly the same, though. It doesn't involve official Hasbro representation, it's back to being strictly a fan convention. Which does have a lot of positives over being corporate-sponsored.Speaking as one who did attend, those BeastBox toys are high quality and very intricate. Anyway, BotCon has its own thread, so back to Studio Series. Is there any inclination how long this line will last? At least until every character gets a figure at least once? In the meantime new movies are released, the video game designs are added and I'm sure Bee will get revisited 600 more times. Probably all before we get the rest if the AoE Dinobots.

Great review! I'm in the same boat with you on being pleasantly surprised. The figure itself is, in my opinion, better in-hand, than what we saw in his initial pictures. What's bothering me about him though, is his lackluster paint job, and his hands/feet. They just don't look good in either mode.chuckdawg1999 wrote:I wasn't expecting to like ROTB Cheetor, but I was pleasantly surprised by a simple transformation that's still fun, and a very clean Cheetah and robot mode. Edit: expanding on the hands/feet: not sure why his robot foot colour is matched to his cheetah front paws, and his hands are matched to his back paws. Seems like it would have looked a little more cohesive, if the robot feet were the same colour as his robot hands, and having his cheetah paws all the same.

That really doesn't bother me as stuff like that happens all the time due to gang molding and the such. Before brand unity that was something that Takara would take care of, one way or the other.

In my opinion, the mismatched hands/feet/paws stick out like a sore thumb. Initially, and I don't think I was the only one, I thought the figure hadn't been transformed correctly for the pictures.chuckdawg1999 wrote:That really doesn't bother me as stuff like that happens all the time due to gang molding and the such. Thinking about it, I wonder if it's due to Cheetor's ROTB movie design, and the toy designers were left with little to no choice. However, I'm unable to locate any clear images of his robot feet in the movie screenshots that we've gotten so far, so I can't say either way.

Dispensor should be his own mold. Frenzy would be a closer candidate for a remold, I think, although he could also use his own mold. Both would probably be core class, so it's not too crazy to hope for new molds.

Dispensor should be his own mold. Frenzy would be a closer candidate for a remold, I think, although he could also use his own mold. Both would probably be core class, so it's not too crazy to hope for new molds.
Agreed with this.
Well of course I agree and would love a new mould for Dispensor. But I dont see that happening, so I take what I can gets.
