The appeal to Star Saber is:
1. He's an asskicking no-nonsense swordsman and warrior.
2. He doesn't die every second episode.
3. Aesthetically, he's one of the coolest transformers ever made.
4. Heavily armed gunships is better than a Semi or Winnebago any day, especially in a war.

Like Powermaster Prime he is a 3-step:
1. Yuuki no Brain (Brain of Courage)
2. Saber
3. Star Saber
I see the Brain in the cockpit, but I can't tell if the gimmick is present.

I too once asked about the appeal of Star Saber as a character:
I get that he looks cool and did some cool things, but what's the appeal of Star Saber, personality-wise? He just seems like an after-school role model who never makes mistakes (and therefore doesn't learn from them) and is practically perfect in every way. Not exactly a three-dimensional guy.
The ending theme even sings about how he never misbehaved as a child.
And got the following answers from folks who find him appealing:
He's the only Autobot who's somebody's dad, which is kind of interesting.
Adopted and raised a human child on his own is pretty unique really for an Autobot leader. It just hasn't been developed very deeply in anything I've read. Combine that with him being a tiny bot who expands several times to "Leader" size and there's a lot of potential for him to be cool there. If he showed up in a US book as a non-Villian he could rock.
For me the appeal is the design. A Masterpiece Star Saber (and especially Victory Saber) would really pop on a shelf.
uper bad@$$ best swordsman in the galaxy space hero robot is someone's dad! The first part is the selling point. The second is the texture that gives him some character.
He's a super robot heroic leader. They're not really about depth. You could say the same thing about most versions of Optimus Prime. This character-type gets texture more than depth in kids programming.
here his texture is adoptive father. It's something a least.
I guess the fatherhood aspect really is a big part of his character appeal. Though, this bit of Q&A occurred before he appeared in the IDW comics as a zealot.

That was amazing. Aside from the voice acting- I mean, I'd heard the Victory dub was bad, but not THAT bad..

I love it. It reminds me of the time Kirk saved Darth Vader on the Serenity from Dr. Who with a generational Star Gate.

Isn't that kind of like the Fusion Canon asking about the appeal of Megatron as a character, Sabrblade?
What other secrets will be revealed on the internet by this book?

Hence my spelling of cannon in my quoted comment, my good sir.

It's hard to say. The best option from the toons is to compare Sixshot and Magnus from the Headmasters series, and then compare Star Saber and Greatshot, a recolor of Sixshot, from the Victory series.
Or just take some aspirin and lie down before thinking of scale again...

Star Saber is more of a one-off thing in celebration of the thirthieth anniversary. However, it's basically a given that if Takara is unwilling to give Victory Leo the Masterpiece treatment, then third party companies will step up to the challenge. There's also the possibility of backwards compatibility with the original Victory Victory Leo, but as several individuals have pointed out, combination with the twenty-year-old toy would probably be too great a risk.

I feel like I'm way more okay with the idea of a tail-end G1 figure combining with a Masterpiece homage than I should be. I admit it would be a pretty cool way to bridge the lines, especially for the Japanese 30th. Heck, it's been done with Skoponok and Cerebros. I'm even more okay with it if it results in both Victory Leo and Star Saber getting re-issues.
Let's say, go.

In the Victory cartoon, Star Saber was gestalt-sized, whereas this toy looks like it'll be slightly taller than MP Ultra Magnus, who will be about two heads taller than MP-10:
Thus, Star Saber likely, yet unfortunately, won't be as giant as he was in the cartoon:

Going by memory here:
StarSaber= Slightly larger than GodGinrai
Regular Ginrai= Approx/Same size as Optimus = Mp-10
GinraiSuperMode is at least twice as tall if scaled correctly.
So yeah, he's not in scale, but an impressive size nonetheless.

However, from the looks of the screenshots, wheeljack and sideswip are just a little taller than Star Saber's knees. Since both are about MP-10 waist height and Star Saber will be about 3 heads taller than optimus (one taller than magnus) I'd think the scale is close enough.
Posted by Sabrblade on August 7th, 2014 @ 9:34am CDT
Yeah, I starting to think that he might at least look close to show scale with the MP Autobot Cars, especiaaly after seeing this pic of Saber (not Star Saber, but his standard robot form Saber) standing next to MP Prowl:mcfmullen wrote:Well if he is gestalt size, I wouldn't expect him to be in scale, but I would hope he is relatively close. For example, MP-08 Grimlock isn't "in scale" but is so close it might as well be considered as such. One head height isn't an end-all-be-all. Same with MP-09.

As Prowl was about the same height as Perceptor (according to the official G1 scale guide), who was about the same height as Saber.
