Every two weeks, Seibertron.com brings you a Top 5 list related to all things Transformers written by me, your fellow editor. These are my opinions (just like movie or game reviews hosted by sites are still just the opinion of one person) so what matters most is what you guys think of the topic or list, and I hope to see your own lists or comments on omissions and ranking. Let's have fun! All previous lists can be found here.

Top 5 Best Water Themed Transformers Toys

5. Transformers Energon Sharkticon

This is a perfect little guy which marks a start to the golden era of quality deluxe class figures from Hasbro for vehicle Transformers (which lead into Classics, Cybertron and Animated). This is an inventive design combining the beast like elements of a shark and a submarine vehicle, making it beautifully Cybertronian. The Transformation is simple but effective, making both the robot and vehicle mode quite distinct, with different shapes and details. The articulation is as good as today's toys but the plastic is better and the pop out firing missiles in vehicle mode is a nice touch on this awesome figure which rocks one of the sweetest decos I have ever seen on a Transformers toy.

4. PCC Undertow and Waterlog

Every one of this toy's three modes is fun. It is hard not to like a speed boat with gattling guns. The green clear plastic cockpit (and robot-mode visor) is a nice touch which adds to the water theme and the light blue combiner ports dont take that much away from this figure as it does others since they end up looking like cybertronian breathing tubes in robot mode. What seals the deal though is the combiner torso which has a steam punk diving bell helmet, going all out on the water theme. And if that wasnt enough, you get the most distinctive minicon partner in the entire line with Waterlog. His more humanoid look makes him a cross homage to both the Centurion toy series, from Kenner, as well as Microman thanks to that clear turquoise plastic he is partly made of. He also doubles as a clear turquoise chest shield, making this really resemble some Microman toys. To have all this awesomeness crammed into a scout class Transformer is quite a rare thing these days.

3. Transformers Hunt For The Decepticons Sea Spray

Who would have thought little old G1 Seaspray would one day be the hulking bad ass he became with this toy. While the alt mode pays homage to the small G1 toy, the robot mode goes for a more streamlined movie look crosed with more traditional and smooth robot designs. I especially like how smooth the alt mode is, it looks so clean with every part connecting together flush that you wouldn't expect it to turn into a robot. But it does and you wouldn't want to mess with it due to the wide upper chest and shoulders and face plated robotic scuba helmet. But just to show you he also has a fun loving side, you can flip flippers from the underside of his feet and he has a fold down ramp in vehicle mode for him to accommodate any scout class Autobot who would need a ride across the pond. In the end I just love the look of this figure and how accomplished it is as a transforming toy which has no unnecessary kibble in either mode.

2. Transformers Beast Wars Metals Depth Charge

There is just so much win with this toy from the headsculpt to the metal manta ray alt mode with a deco that just pops. I like how beefy he is as a toy and I really like the opposite sides of the manta ray face becoming the legs, along with the how glorious he looks with his wings in robot mode. He also has a very fun central disc launching gimmick which works in all modes. If that wasn't enough, his tail becomes a harpoon and he has a shark drone which can fire missiles. Definitely one of the most fun toys of the Beast Wars era.

1. Transformers Beast Wars Cybershark

An extremely efficient transformer whose body length shell serves as a great disguise to a very poseable robot. The shark mode has beautiful deco which looks as good as any plastic shark toy found in toy stores in the 90s. What is amazing is that, despite it being a shellformer, it has great alt mode integration that is very reminiscent of traditional transformers with having the head of the alt mode as the chest. A main aspect of the original toys that make up what we call G1 was the disguise component and how they could infiltrate other toylines which didn’t transform. With its phenomenal alt mode, this sharkformer is a perfect example of this legacy. The deco on this toy is as masterful as that headsculpt and he comes armed to the teeth with extra shark themed projectiles (that can be stored within his back) and his pincertail. Of course, that is aside from his hammerhead shark head which he can shoot from his body!

Honourable mentions: Revenge of the Fallen Depthcharge, Energon Mirage, G1 Octopunch (he was the first with the deep dive helmet), and Legends Gelshark.

And of course, a water themed list wouldn't be complete without a mention of Transformers Armada Tidal Wave!!!!!!! The main reason he didn't make it is because while his name was very much "Check me out, I am water themed!", I found the toy far too Cybertronian looking that it didn't fit the water theme the creators were probably going for, aside from the aircraft carrier component. The Battleship mode looks more meant for space travel than going across the sea.

Great list and it's one of the only ones where I can say I own number 1 on the list :D he may not be known as much as his transmetal upgrade (or more appropriately, who that toy was re-released as) but he's still quite fun and I love how his transformation method is the same as the smaller releases like iguanus and terrasaur.

Also I was unaware that the pcc line had someone like undertow in it.

I love my Takara Tidalwave/Shockwave. The paint apps alone surpasses any one of the Hasbro versions. I feel Tidalwave SHOULD have been a part of the Combiner Wars line...damn can you imagine? Thanks for putting him on the list WJ! :VEHI:

I totally disagree with you on Tidal Wave. Not only should he be on the list, he should get the top spot. All 3 parts are straight water-battle themed, and they function very well when combined. I also have to note that Galaxy Force Thunderblast is also missing. That figure is also superior to all the figures you listed, maybe with the exception of Depth Charge. Of course, BotCon Elita also goes with that, as that's a redeco of Thunderblast. Of those you actually put on the list, Depth Charge should be #1.

Great list. But I'm shocked King Poseidon a.k.a Piranacon and the Seacons did not get even a passing mention.

They are the quintessential water / sea based transformers, and while the combined mode is not the greatest, the individual beats modes are list worthy specially Lobclaw (Nautilator) and Kraken (Seawing).

Lobclaw (Nautilator) is generally the right leg. Though sometimes like in the picture I used, its Gulf (Skalor).

You can still get the commemorative seacons for around $59.99 at BBTS if you really want a complete Seacon set.

What about BW TM Rampage? Is he not water themed?

Also don't forget that Tidwave's leg section has foldout seats for minicons to transport them across the water.

I'm really hoping they eventually do an update to G1 Sharkticon, if only because of the metal teeth.

Woohoo! Aquatic Transformers for the win!

Very good list, I must say. Though I'd have liked Energon Mirage/Dreadwing to at least get an honourable mention, along with, of course, the Seacons (though that's already been mentioned).

Cybershark seems a bit of an odd choice for number 1 though. Now granted I don't own him, but he seems a bit...pedestrian? I would have gone with TM2 Cybershark/RID Skybyte, or even Beast Wars II Hellscream. BW Rampage would have been a good mention...but I might just be saying that because of my unhealthy obsession with BW Rampage, and crab-bots in general (Nautilator, BW Razorclaw, Octopunch etc...).

So once again WJ-35 chooses a theme that blatantly excludes Stalker.

That's fine, it's what I've come to expect from his Stalker hatred. But now it's clearly obvious that his hatred towards G1.5 figures extends to G2 figures.

Manta Ray. Making speed boats cool way before that PCC loser Undertow.

Tidal Wave definitely deserves better than just a mention.

I do love that Energon Sharkticon made the list, I love that figure for some reason. I would have probably put him and TW as the top two, then Seaspray. I honestly don't know where I'd go after that.

Gorgeous list, thanks! By the way, while her name is Thunderblast in the Cybertron line, she is Galaxy Force Chromia. And the reason I didnt put her on my list is because I greatly dislike that mold (she made honourable mention here) and think it's one of the most overrated toys ever. That list will be up someday too, looking forward to the comments
But really, thanks for the list, I wish more people wrote their top 5 too so that we can get a sense of everyone's taste.

Also, why would you pick RID Sky-Byte over TM2 Cybershark, do you preffer the deco on Sky-Byte? I had that mold and much preffered the update Takara did with Gelshark, who is in my honourable mentions. They found an awesome way to take care of his big shell and have both robot and shark mode looking like sleek deadly killers. Plus, the update makes his chest actually be the shark head, I found that pretty incredible.

Thanks man! And I did mention Energon Mirage, I too think he is awesome. That headsculpt is killer!

And yeah aside from Octopunch, I did exclude a lot of G1. Thats because I do compare all toys being equal, which I get might not be fair to some. But by doing that, a lot of G1 usually seems dated in comparison. These lists are meant to help show different parts of this hobby to those that might not be aware of it all. And I find it hard to recomend G1 outright to people starting since its very much a world of its own. Some lists will have G1 when its appropriate and when a G1 toy does rise above the rest (like when looking at best car alt modes for instance, or G1 scattershot being a really cool looking cybertronian ship). But for the most part, G1 usually gets its own lists because it is so hard to compare with toys that have more articulation and that arent as dated (like the Sharkticon I mention which might be almost 15 years old but whos articulation, deco and playability is as good if not better than today's toys).

As for BW Rampage, thats very interesting, because I considered him more land, especially with those treads. But yeah, he is water themed, as crabs are (though I associate them more to the shore than outright being in the water, unlike a shark or a boat, but thats just me).

You know, this is making me think that this water theme is far greater than some may have thought. And while some people have now learnt of Undertow, I have now learnt of Manta. So thanks Burn. He does look terrible though :-P Joking aside, its pretty cool that he comes up right away when you google Boat Transformer:

Yeah, that one actually looked the best of the lot lol

If we include 3P, MMC's Hearts of Steel Shockwave is pretty neat, and the new TFC Seacons combiner set looks to be shaping up nicely.

That's Revenge of the Fallen Depthcharge. He's a fun toy but his legs aren't the best, I would of preferred if more of the boats hull folded away but I guess that would be too much for scout class.

Well, Seaspreay was great (especially teamed up with Breacher) but I don't really care for the rest at all. Never been into water-based altforms. Maybe it's cos to look right they'd best be put in actual water and I'm not gonna do that. :P

You've overlooked the greatest aqua-bot of them all! Poor Tako Tank -- why must true love always allude you?

Very good list, I must say. Though I'd have liked Energon Mirage/Dreadwing to at least get an honourable mention, along with, of course, the Seacons (though that's already been mentioned).

Yeah, I hear ya. Would a top 5 aquatic G1/G1.5/G2 TF toys be overkill? If not, aside from the obvious (the Seacons because F*CK YEAH SEACONS) I'd suggest Gnaw with his shiny chrome teeth and Pretender Submarauder with his creepy Gigeresque shell and horseshoe crab "submarine" mode.

As for BW Rampage, thats very interesting, because I considered him more land, especially with those treads. But yeah, he is water themed, as crabs are (though I associate them more to the shore than outright being in the water, unlike a shark or a boat, but thats just me).

That's fair enough. To the best of my knowledge, crabs (or at least some crabs) do spend a lot of time actually underwater on the sea floor. IIRC Rampage is styled after a king crab, which is definitely an undersea/bottom feeder crab.

(Actually...a TF that turns into a Japanese giant spider crab would be both awesome and terrifying.)

If anyone can name more water themed TFs not covered yet, don't be shy.

I can think of a few, though they're more amphibious than strictly water-based. Beast Wars Basics Snapper...
Image
Beast Wars Fuzors Terragator (who isn't going to win any awards for being a good toy but has an awesome beast mode, which sort of makes up for his atrocious robot mode. A bit.)...
Image
And of course, the Tako Tank!

Here's a few more although they wouldnt make the list:

Ah, poor Shortround. One of the few Transformers to have a fairly convincing toilet mode.

Hammerstrike! If only his robot mode wasn't so terrible, 'cause that shark mode is great!

BW Razorclaw

I'd love to get this guy one day. He has a really simple transformation that still works well, and the sculpted detailing on his is killer. Gotta love Kenner and their sculpting work.

Y'know, speaking of Sea Clamp and Tripredacus in general, I'd love to see a proper update for ol' Trippy (that BotCon abomination doesn't count). 2 of his components are great but Ramhorn kinda sucks (at least from what I've seen). Third parties take note!

Submaruader is an amazing design!

Just making sure though, thats a shark head he has right? Reminds me of a street shark:

And you can take my word for it, Beast Wars Ramhorn is a terrible toy when he is not a limb. Especially the robot mode. But his transformation into the 2 arms is pretty cool and very well done.

BW Razorclaw! And yeah, Claw Jaw too, love that little weirdo. But WJ, I'm shocked that Legends Skybyte doesn't make your list, even that he's #1. You love that figure! Haters be damned! :-(

He's in the honourable mentions since I do love that toy (Legends Gelshark). I wasnt gonna have 2 sharks on the list ( :-? that gives me an idea for a top 5 sharks list) and I do feel Cybershark is better for how much he accomplishes. He also has better hands

Yeah, I feel the same about his legs. It's just pieces of the ship in half. Still makes a great alt mode though, hence why I used him for the cover ;) Actually, now that I think of it, his legs remind me of a new Water themed TF that was just released, High Tide:

 Did you know he was initially made by Takara to be a Microman Playset? Thats why he is so different from everything else.

Other problem I had with depthcharge was I got him the same time as skystalker, so he just paled in comparison :-D I do see a resemblance to the legs of high tide.

Seems to be you only have limited choices with boat hulls and transformations
