Additionally G.I. Joe Renegades and I *think* some of the MLP films are on Blu Ray also.

Then I'd say wait, or buy it when it's on sale the first week at target and return it if the blu-ray announcement comes through;
On an unrelated note, wonder if the BW show would look nice on blu-ray

Note sure... Not many TV shows prior to the HD era are being released on Blu Ray (The various Star Trek series are some that come to mind), but they usually require some extensive digital reworking and preservation. Although what Mainframe was producing in the mid-90's to early 2000's was ground breaking, I'm not sure how well it would look in HD (would it look better, or only highlight the flaws in the early CG that we may not notice now??)
I also guess it depends on the quality of the master prints that S!F has. I know they have released Beast Wars a couple of times on DVD. I still have the original Rhino releases, so I don't cant say if the S!F ones are any better, or pretty much the same, just repackaged.

Kids won't care about 480p vs 1080p, so it makes sense to keep the cost down on this series by just going the DVD route for now.
On another note, I'm very glad they announced this before the episode 6-10 single disc released. Saves a little bit of dough on that one.

Agreed. And although for example- MLP has a huge adult cult following, it may not be quite enough to justify Blu Ray sets of the regular TV show, as opposed to the telefilms. I agree that RiD15 would probably not benefit nearly as much from Blu Ray as Prime does, but the only reason I am holding out is if they are doing both at the same time (or roughly within the same time frame), I will obviously go with the Blu Ray. If not, then the DVD is just fine. I have managed in *most* cases to stick to my guns and not frivolously double-dip for Blu Rays that I already have DVD's of.

Shout Factory doesn't really put alot of energy into packaging design.

Their G1 and Beast Wars DVD set artworks looked pretty good, with the G1 sets having all new art while the Beast Wars art was creatively arranged Mainframe art. And their Beast Machines DVD art looked stunningly gorgeous.JoeMabbon wrote:Sabrblade wrote:Wow, that it some generically-boring-looking DVD artwork. o.supreme wrote:What boggles my mind though, is the logic that an action cartoon has to make a ton of money in toy sales to justify its existence. I mean I don't exactly see tons of Uncle Grandpa, Adventure Time, Teen Titans Go!, World of Gumball etc.. toys or merchandise being sold.
Those shows are produced directly by Cartoon Network so they're making money off of advertising and licensing and whatnot. If the show fails they don't take a huge loss. On the other hand the action shows are typically produced by toy companies that have to produce the animation and buy the air time all with the goal to sell toys. If the toys don't sell then there's no need for the cartoon anymore so they cancel it and cut their losses. Unfortunately this means even good, promising shows like the updated Thundercats can be canceled out of the blue if the toy company (in this case Bandai) isn't selling toys.

Those DVDs are made to appeal to nostalgic adults that will want them to look cool on a shelf. The RID discs are made bright and flashy to get kids' attention.

What about the Armada and Energon DVDs looking just as bland while Cybertron gets a neat-looking DVD set?Emerje wrote:Those DVDs are made to appeal to nostalgic adults that will want them to look cool on a shelf. The RID discs are made bright and flashy to get kids' attention.

Eh, they all had pretty terrible single release covers, but for the collections the Cybertron cover is only mildly better than the other two using a similar generic background, but wedging Megatron and Vector Prime on. It's a better effort, sure, but still pretty weak.

Yeah, but wouldn't the Unicron Trilogy releases also be targeted to nostalgic adults? Kids who grew up on those shows by now aren't kids anymore.Emerje wrote:Sabrblade wrote:What about the Armada and Energon DVDs looking just as bland while Cybertron gets a neat-looking DVD set?Emerje wrote:Those DVDs are made to appeal to nostalgic adults that will want them to look cool on a shelf. True, but not quite at the nostalgia buying age either. Usually people who are buying things out of childhood nostalgia are out of college, have established careers, and are building families. I think around 2020 we'll see some really cool AEC stuff released.

The pre-nostalgia-buying gap is getting smaller and smaller as people in general are getting more comfortable with the idea of owning toys into adulthood. I wonder if it may wind up generally being eliminated?Emerje wrote:Sabrblade wrote:Yeah, but wouldn't the Unicron Trilogy releases also be targeted to nostalgic adults?
