We have an update on the much delayed Transformers Universe MOTA from Jagex CEO Mark Gerhard. The game should finally launch this summer, and we can expect regular updates up until that point. Those updates will include a new in-game trailer, new screen shots, and details regarding game features, modes, and characters. His full statement can be found below:

Hi Everybody,

First off some introductions. My name is Mark Gerhard and I’m the CEO & CTO of Jagex. We’re probably better known as the developers of the world’s largest free browser game RuneScape but now, following the past 3 years of development, Transformers Universe!

Many of you joined us on our journey for the first time when we shared a sneak peek into our aspiration for the game back in 12/12/12. Since then we’ve refined our vision, gameplay, tech and team to bring you what we believe will be the start of an entertaining, social and competitive game for all of you to enjoy over the next decade and beyond!

2013 was a critical year in the evolution of Transformers Universe. It was essential that we just knuckled down and got on with the core gameplay, and that unfortunately meant there was not much news to share for anyone outside of Jagex.

However from today onwards you can expect regular updates, and soon all start participating first-hand as the game moves from core development, through each stage of community participation, balancing, polish and iteration.

So here’s the big news. We are 100% set to launch Transformers Universe this Summer, and will be progressively inviting an ever-widening portion of the BETA community to enjoy the game before opening it to the rest of the world this summer!

With that in mind, let’s talk a bit more about the game itself.

We’ve built a massively online, tactical action game, or MOTA as I like to call it! Transformers Universe offers fast-paced, battle centric, tactical action with a selection of game modes for core gamers, casual gamers and Transformers enthusiasts alike.

As the Commander of a new squad, you will recruit, maintain and battle others with a unique collection of Transformers warriors created in collaboration with our friends at Hasbro.

Autobots versus Decepticons, you’ll team up to play with and against other Commanders around the world in tactical and strategic online battles, competing for supremacy in the global faction war. Legendary Transformers characters will make special appearances – but more on that another time!

Your squad of Bots are a faction-specific collection with their own play styles, weaponry, augment options and specialties. There are countless fighting strategies when battling them and we really believe they will crystallise, embody and capture both what Transformers is all about and your imaginations.

So what’s next? Well, very soon we’re going to be releasing our first in-engine trailer, which will give you a first look at some of the playable Bots in the game.

We’ll be posting up exclusive in-game screenshots soon, so you can see the game coming together. You will be the first people to see them, and naturally deserve nothing less.

What else should you expect from Transformers Universe in 2014? After the trailer we’ll also be launching numerous other initiatives; kicking-off our BETA program first, revealing and detailing the games major features and modes, spotlighting the new characters that you’ll be able to own in-game and a whole lot more.

The best place to get all relevant information will be right here on this website. You’re a central part of what will make the Transformers Universe community special, so please do sign up to our channels on YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, and the official forums.

2014 is the launch year for Transformers Universe and the start of an epic journey as you #testyourmetal. Soon you’ll be able to experience this for yourself as we roll out to BETA.

I look forward to seeing you on the frontlines.

Have fun and speak soon,

Thanks,

Mark

Heh...personally I don't care anymore. I wait 3 years already for that game. And I subscriped also on the Beta, but never got a mail to be part of the Beta... If I may say so, Jagex you suck. :-x

Is it safe to say that this will be the last large piece of aligned fiction?

Oh yeah, this exists.

To be fair, I assume it takes a long time to develop video games. I just wish they hadn't hyped it up so high when they announced it. I was super excited then, but now I'm only marginally curious. I hope that with more frequent updates, my excitement can be rekindled. We'll just have to wait and see.

It's not what we expected (and wanted it) to be, but I'm still interested with the final result!

Either way, I hope that the customization of the units doesn't go full-WFC and pretty much block us out of the modelling phase completely.

... I also posted this in the N&R forum, and I don't have my news credit for it.

It's kind of sad, really. This is the kind of game I would've liked.

Not that I'm not going to still try it out and play it, but I would've personally enjoyed creating a Transformer that way.

But anyway, with all of these changes, am I the only one who thinks this will turn into something akin to League of Legends?

Thanks again to Seibertron.com user #Sideways#, we have another update about the Jagex Transformers Universe online game, to be released this summer. Courtesy of entertainment news site IGN, we get a further look at the game, including a trailer - check it out below, along with some further information!

In Transformers Universe, you'll be the Commander of a new squad. In this role, you'll recruit, maintain and battle others using unique Transformers created by Jagex and Hasbro. The Bots under your command will be faction-aligned and offer unique play styles, weapons, augments and specialities.

The Autobots vs Decepticons feud is alive and kicking, and you'll be teaming up with and fighting against other Commanders along faction lines. Legendary heroes and villains will be making special appearances from time to time, although more is planned to be revealed on that front at a later date.

We'll have much more on Transformers Universe in the coming months. Anyone interested in participating in the beta should register their interest now.

Oh wow, totally forgot this existed.
This was originally announced alongside WFC if I remember correctly. And wasn't it supposed to come out like within a year? WTF took them so long.
It also seems kinda pointless now, since this was specifically designed to work alongside Prime, set in the Aligned Universe and using the same style as Prime. Just Prime is now over, and Hasbro is moving towards simpler designs and, well a more kiddy tone again.
On top of that, it's just a trailer for the Beta?
Somehow I doubt this will ever actually be released.

I think the designs in the game look like they're a link between WFC/FOC and TFP's designs. I wonder if Hasbro wanted to bridge them to show that perhaps at one point in the Aligned Universe the TFs did start out looking more G1 but then evolved into the TFP style we see today. That's interesting if that was the intent.

However I'm not digging Megatron's face. It just looks rather plain somehow. He needs some features in it to make him more imtemedating and scary like more monsterous eyes, scars anything. Like how BW Megs has a classy but evil look,Armada Megs with a powerful militeristic look,Animated Megs with his cunning and caculating face along with Movie Megs with a monserous look and Prime Megs's evil warlord look.

No the Ironhide toy came from some concept art that was from when Bulkhead was going to be Ironhide before they changed their minds because they thought kids would be confused because he died in DOTM.

stupid reason if you ask me i think kids would be able to tell the show was not the same thing as the movies.

anyway here is the concept art.

Looks cool, but I would have preferred they stuck with MMO instead of a MOBA. Like DC Universe Online, it would have been great to hang out and/or explore locations as your own Transformer.

PC Gamer has an interview up with Chief Creative Officer of Jagex, Alex Horton, talking about his experiences working on Transformers Universe. Jagex is the developer working on Transformers Universe, a multi-player, class-based tactical action game. Horton talks about characters in the game, and how developers are incorporating in brand-new characters along with lesser known characters from the franchise history. He talks about how great it has been to work with Hasbro, to collaborate on new characters and bringing back some of the more obscure characters from the Transformers history.

Horton goes on to talk about how the franchise has always been about action, and how Universe will stay true to that while offering a free-to-play, browser-based gaming arena. He says that they are targeting not only core gamers and Transformers enthusiasts, but also the casual gamer. They’re striving for a game you’ll grow into; as you get deeper into the game you’ll get more into the weapons available and challenge increasingly difficult opponents.

While Horton won’t say in what capacity the most familiar Transformers will appear in, he does say that we will see them, and that they will continue to give players more information on those characters, and the game itself, in coming months. Check out the entire interview below.

Image

PC Gamer: So you’ve created two Transformers just for the game in Conduit and Front-Line. What can they give the game that doesn’t already exist in Transformers mythology?

Alex Horton: We’ve created a ton of transformers for our game! Some are brand new, others pulled from the rich lore and history of the Transformers brand. We’ve been really fortunate to have the opportunity to build on that legacy with our own characters. What this gives us is the flexibility to create characters that are custom-built for our game, whether that’s healers like Conduit or former vigilantes like Front-Line. As we reveal more characters and more details on the game you’ll see how these characters fit the gameplay of Transformers Universe. Ultimately, it gives us the chance to build a selection of characters with complimentary and contrasting abilities.

What’s the process like of creating brand new characters in the Transformers Universe? Is there a difficult approval process with Hasbro on that sort of stuff?

Hasbro have been fantastic partners to work with on Transformers Universe. Collaborating with the team there we’ve bought our collective experiences together, combining artists, game designers and the deepest knowledge on the world of Transformers to create a great selection of Autobots and Decepticons for you to command in battle. We’ve even surprised the Hasbro guys by bringing back some seriously obscure transformers from the depths of Cybertronian time.

Can you talk about how the game has changed since its original announcement, and what led to Transformers Universe being the type of game it is now?

Our objective for Transformers Universe has been to carve out our own space in this well-established universe and, more importantly, build a game that is reflective of today’s gaming landscape, as well as working for the brand.

Transformers are about war. They’re about action. So whilst staying true to what Jagex is best at—pushing forward the free-to-play, browser-based gaming arena—we moved away from delivering “RuneScape: The Cybertron Edition” and focused on upping the emphasis on action and the different skills of a collection of Transformers Warriors. We’ve created a collaborative and competitive combat experience with deep MMO heritage. A game for today.

The Transformers are the center of the game, rather than the original notion of building your own Transformers warrior that is your avatar. That’s probably the most profound change. This idea of building out your collection of transformers– something central to toys and games. Pair that with the shorter-session, competitive experience driving the gaming zeitgeist at the moment and we really have the foundations for something special.
As a commander of this collection of Transformers warriors that you’ve recruited, you take them into battle against fellow players from around the world, playing your part in one of the oldest battles in gaming—Autobots vs. Decepticons.

You’ve said you’re targeting “core gamers, casual gamers and Transformers enthusiasts” – is it difficult to balance the game so there’s both mainstream appeal and complexity for gamers who might be familiar with similar titles to Transformers Universe?

In a word—yes. But there’s more to it than the single axis of casual to core. What we’re striving for is a game that you grow into, so as you learn more you can go deeper into the weapon systems we’ve devised and we’ll match you against tougher and tougher enemies. We understand that challenge and want to deliver an experience that is true to the brand—and that’s perhaps the strongest driver we have. We have a very experienced team made up of all kinds of gamers that understand the challenges from both sides of the process. It’s as much of a labor of love as anything else, and the team are genuinely putting heart and soul into this game, because it’s something that they believe in and have very, very fond memories of.

Obviously the game had a bit of radio silence in 2013. Were you waiting for the new Transformers movie to help you capture a bit more of that potential casual crowd?

2013 was a big year for the game. We made some major decisions during that time to ensure that we could bring the best possible product to market. We chose to maintain a silence as we knuckled down and focused on engineering a game for the long term. With a desire to bring more fluidity to play whilst maintaining our ultra-secure platform and client-server technology we opted to integrate third-party middleware with multi-platform capabilities into the way we make games at Jagex. We’re building a game service to run for the next decade, and whilst we love the movies it's not something to base the launch of our game around.

You’ve discussed that more familiar Transformers characters will appear in some capacity. Can you talk a bit about how that will work?

Unfortunately, not at this point! But I can confirm that they’ll be there, and we’ll be revealing more on them soon. We understand it’s something that players want to see and know more about—so we will be giving players all the information on these Transformers legends in the coming months.

maybe one day we'll get the real story of why they announced a game, then went silent for 2 years and came back with a neutered, bland sounding game with little reason behind it?

You know, I posted threads for both this, the previews for Conduit and his and Front-Line's full reveals, and I don't think I have gotten news credits for any of them, even though no one else had posted anything of the sort prior. Did someone get in before I did and I am just whining about old news, or...?

But yeah! I am looking forward to this, from what I have seen before. The interview doesn't say much new other than the single-toned answers we've been getting prior, but hey! At least it looks like there are new images.
