The Hollywood bump is all it takes to pull a property out of obscurity, and IDW is showing what an updated Visionaries might look like by bringing it back in comics. December’s Visionaries Vs. Transformers pits a forgotten property against one of the world’s biggest, and IDW is making a smart move introducing this new version of Visionaries by attaching it to a far more popular franchise.
Even smarter is teaming Magdalene Visaggio, writer of the Eisner Award-nominated Kim & Kim, with artist Fico Ossio to put their own fresh spin on the characters as they introduce them on the Transformers’ home planet of Cybertron. “”As someone who grew up on a host of Hasbro/Sunbow animated shows, I’m very excited to help revive Visionaries for modern audiences,” says Visaggio. We’ve worked hard to keep it fresh enough for new readers, but faithful enough to the source material for old fans. It has all the same scheming wizards, dastardly villains, and flawed heroes of the original, but with a stunning new twist.” Ossio adds: “I’m very excited to be working on Visionaries and teaming up with Mags and [editor] Sarah [Gaydos]! Happy to be able to update them for a new generation! Mags’ script is really great and I can’t wait to have them stand against the Transformers.”

For “Bumblebee,” a spin-off of the Michael Bay franchise “Transformer” movies, plenty of it is in Vallejo. This week on Mare Island, count on evenings with helicopters, special effects and pyrotechnics, followed by two days of downtown action.
The supervising location manager and co-producer oversees around 15 people on his team, though he’s handled movies orchestrated as many as 50 others working simultaneously in numerous states and countries.
It’s not a job for the timid, said Hook, a Los Angeles resident and native of England.
“You are dealing with change and pressure,” he said. “But if you’re creative and have a good imagination, you can climb the ranks quickly.”
Hook started as a personal assistant in England doing a period piece that included a shipwreck.
“My job was running out with blankets, tea and coffee,” Hook said.

It wasn’t difficult to create exactly what was needed in town here, Hook said.
“Vallejo has got great bones,” he said of the town’s infrastructure. “It’s an Anywhere America, Back-to-the-Future type vibe. The great thing about Vallejo is there aren’t these huge chain stores. There a few other cities in California like it, but not that many. The city hasn’t been turned into a strip mall.”
Mare Island’s drydocks have been perfect for “Bumblebee,” said Hook.
So good, he noted, “the ending of the movie was re-written after finding the location.”

At this year's San Diego Comic-Con we got to talk for a few minutes with IDW's David Rodriguez and Mairghread Scott, writers for IDW's Transformers. We discussed the end of Mairghread's "Till All Are One" series (and why she wrote Starscream the way she did) and about IDW's new "First Strike" arc and what that means for the Transformers and G.I. Joe. Artwork in the video by Sara Pitre-Durocher, Priscilla Tramontano, and Max Dunbar.
