Fellow Seibertronian Doc Bot was able to acquire a Hasbro/Xiaomi MiPad Soundwave figure off the secondary market, and has shared a number of in-hand images along with some thoughts for the rest of the collecting Transformers community - check them both out below! Images include the figure in robot mode, tablet mode, the Laserbeak section, comparisons with real tablets and other Soundwave figures, plenty to feast your optics on.

Doc bot wrote:Here are a few rough pics I took while unboxing the MiPad2 Soundwave I just got in from China. Pretty impressive engineering since he's so thin. Packaged just like an electronic gadget rather than a toy which is pretty cool. I imagine this might even be the same packaging as the real tablet. Since his back is bare, it comes in a gold colored sleeve that initially makes him look more like the real thing. The instructions are in a cool Decepticon shaped book with 30 steps (he needs them all).

I can take some better photos later along with the lazerbeak part and guns. I just took these quickly for unboxing fun. Articulation is awfully limited by his unusual transformation.

Lazerbeak needs a bit of imagination to interpret. He attaches to Soundwave's back as wings.

I do want this and I'll get it, but ...

Dammit, why doesn't it come in blue?

It might be meant to be Movieverse Soundwave, who was mostly silver.

Movie sound wave looks more like sound wave in head and face this one does not plus I never saw blue iPad apple products mostly remain same color silver, black, white sometimes gold never blue

If you watch the video in the first post they state that the name was given to this product after it was designed. They chose to call it soundwave because it was a communication device. Nothing more.

I don't think he's "meant" to be anyone other than a loose interpretation of the 'Transformer communications officer' archetype.

I wonder what are the chances of Hasbro importing this over here (or at least it popping up somewhere)? I'm guessing the Mi Pad license puts a hole in that idea, but boy if this isn't one of the more interesting TF products in recent years thanks to not being a slavish homage.

The head design still looks enough like Soundwave, and most like the Movieverse version than other versions.

Well, they said "Soundwave would be the most suitable name for this product" which doesn't necessarily mean that name came after it was designed.

It's head is Soundwavy, albeit in a Prime-esque, abstract sort of way. It's chest also invokes Soundwave.

And it comes with a little Ratbat guy integrated in it's design.

So it has to have been modeled after Soundwave. At least a little bit.

I think one of the neatest parts of his transformation is his head. It's made of 3 slices that cobble together so that he can remain thin in tablet mode. He looses all articulation, but it's pretty cool.

ImageImage

Overall articulation isn't great, but he does have ratcheting hips and knees along with ankle swivels so can stand solidly.

Well, they said "Soundwave would be the most suitable name for this product" which doesn't necessarily mean that name came after it was designed.

That means there were options and that was the best one. It most definitely means that the name was secondary to the product.

Gotta disagree there. It doesn't give any sense about when the name was chosen. Just that they had "this product" in mind - a transforming mi pad.

And it comes with a very Ratbatish minion. And the head too. Those things didn't have to be designed that way.

Seems to me that they chose a name, possibly with a preliminary design, and went from there. There didn't need to be a Ratbat. I'd probably agree with your interpretation if it wasn't for the presence of a minion. There's no reason to include that other than to tie it in with Soundwave. And it's a part of it's overall design - not an accessory that could be tossed in.

Freaky. Don't get too many transformations that, by all rights, should actually kill the Bot in question.

(morbidly curious if there are any mechanical details inside the head slices, like brain modules or the backs of the eyeballs; doesn't look like it though)

No brain bits that I can see. That's a missed opportunity.

Noticed that Lazerbeak/Ratbat's "face" is the USB charge port. It would have been super cool if a real cable could be plugged in.

Hasbro isnt selling it, Xiomi is, its their product, they are the owners. And they are only selling it in China.

http://home.mi.com/shop/detail?gid=159

If you want to buy it, you have to get it from an importer or secondary seller like below:

Asia Exclusive Gold Color Edition

The title for the preorder is interesting. If this is the "gold colour edition" then maybe there's a "blue color edition"? Worth waiting to see if there's exactly the kind of product I want on it's way. :-?

Honestly, he looks more like a Gundam than a Soundwave of any kind, but to me that isn't a problem (I love Gundam-style mechs), just don't think it's Soundwave.

That's my exact thoughts - bar the gundam part considering I've never watched it. It's an amazing looking figure with a great design and fantastic engineering; I just don't quite get 'Soundwave' from it.
I think I'll take to calling him Padlock. Badass name that hasn't been used before, it's derived from a Pad, most systems like these have security hence lock...

you identify certain characters by the way they look, various configurations but still are
identifiable(this is not) are fine no matter what they turn into

I'm just saying it's as much Soundwave as the Movieverse one, maybe even moreso since this one not only has a Soundwave-ish head but actually turns into a media device, can physically integrate its minion onto its body, and has a rectangular window/screen-based chest. All of which are major Soundwave-y aspects that this figure nails down while the Movieverse Soundwave only has one of those aspects (the head).

I mean, what does it take for even the most radically-different designs to be deemed fit to be Soundwave designs? Prime Soundwave, for instance, is a far cry from the traditional Soundwave look as well, and of the above-mentioned aspects he only has the minion-integration aspect. His head, altmode, and chest all differ from the traditional Soundwave look. Sure, he's blue, but he's more solid blue than not, whereas the traditional Soundwave colors are a more balanced display of blue and silver together. This new Soundwave just goes in the other direction with using the silver as its main color, likewise with Movieverse Soundwave being silver.

After all, it's not like it's as wildly different-looking a Soundwave as this one was:

There is more to the Prime version than that:

Many of the "Transformers Prime" character designs try to work elements of the character's previous incarnations into their design. In the case of Soundwave, there are a couple elements fans will be familiar with from the G1 era:

-Soundwave's head sculpt is based largely on the Decepticon symbol. This includes the central crest with two points on top and the antennae like protrusions that angle out to the sides and the triangular shape of his face. This is quite appropriate since G1 Soundwave's face also resembled the Decepticon symbol (and may have been the inspiration for it).
-Laserbeak's ability to attach and "eject" from Soundwave's chest is a callback to his G1 self who was able to open his "cassette deck" chest and launch "tapes" that would transform into his own personal army including Laserbeak.

While nowhere near as obvious a homage as say, Optimus Prime or Wheeljack, I do give the designers credit for incorporating two such iconic elements of the character into an otherwise brand new design.

Plus, the TFP Soundwave was a completely different take on the character that was explored on the show. I heavily doubt there's gonna be a similar amount of fiction covering this; it's just a bit of a gimmick collaboration - so if you're selling it as Soundwave, it would probably make sense for it to be recognisable as Soundwave.

I heavily doubt there's gonna be a similar amount of fiction covering this; it's just a bit of a gimmick collaboration - so if you're selling it as Soundwave, it would probably make sense for it to be recognisable as Soundwave.
But with that head design and color scheme, how is it not recognizable as a sideline toy of Movieverse Soundwave?

Wasn't the development video clearly showing G1 Soundwave as their inspiration tho?
Aren't all Soundwaves (BW excluded) inspired by G1 Soundwave in some way?

then isnt this one inspired by G1 soundwave

I actually see a pretty close resemblance between the SDCC Pad-Soundwave and the ROTF Soundwave toy the both have similar heads, they are both off-white in part the have the same shaped duel prong feet and some of the kibble on the ROTF one isn't that far away from the look of the winged backpack.

I look on it like this - it's a bit like when Rumble got decapitated and turned into a mobile phone.

Only that idea applied to Movie Soundwave.

I see some merit in him as a leader for the Real Gear Robots. he also has some resemblance *though less wacky* to the "Kitchen Crew" too (I.e. Ejector & friends).

I've ordered a gold one i'll see what he looks like with The Transformers Prime toys to when I get him - but I suspect if he's going to look good with anything it will be Movie toys.

OK My Gold Soundwave Pad arrived today. He's not so much gold as he is "Reefer yellow" or yellow Bronze.

He's heavier than I expected - I thought he'd be as light as a feather but he feels reasonably substantial.

He will totally fill the job that I had in mind for him which is to be the boss of the real gear Robots.

Overall he's very god aside from some very small nitpicks.

I would have liked his feet to peg together if feasible, not a huge issue though - his arm articulation is a little peculiar, and The Ratbat/Laserbeak drone could have done with more of an obvious face and feet - as it is it kinda works as a pseudo TF Prime Laserbeak drone I guess - but an upgrade kit would be nice to give him feet and a face.

If anyone finds somewhere that sells a clip on cover for 7" tablets that fits him I'd like one to cover up his robot parts in tablet mode.

He does have some pleasing subtle details on him like the paint in his torso groves that you can barely even see.

He's certainly easy to store being so thin.

Oh and UK customers who bought the gold one from the site selling them might like to know that they actually ship from the UK. which seems to suggest that site must have a UK portal - I don't mind that I ordered from the US site as it enabled me to get cashback on him too. oddly though the voucher codes I also had actually put his price up not down.

The gold one is a little cheaper but If you like the silver there not a huge difference in price so it seems. I wonder if they will make him in white and blue and black too ?

You will probably remember the Xiaomi Mi Pad Soundwave figure released last year for San Diego Comic Con - it looks like Hasbro has kept the license running for the company, as an Optimus Prime figure turning into a Power Bank has surfaced on the usual Weibo account. Check it out below, as we also included an image of the possible dock alt mode!
