Hot on the heels about news regarding a My Little Pony / Transformers crossover graphic novel called "Friendship in Disguise", we find out from our friends at IDW Publishing, that the graphic novel will be released earlier this year as individual issues available weekly in May 2020. They are REALLY doing this?! Hey HASBRO, bring back the old KENNER line of M.A.S.K. and CENTURIONS. THAT would be spectacular news. A new toyline and new animated series to go with them. I never understood the hype or alleged appeal of talking pastel-colored ponies. That stated, I miss The Care Bears. :-(

Tell them to go read Transformers/New Avengers.

I don't know why they're so upset though, it's not like they're being forced to read it. It's not like it's going to become the status quo.

It's just a crossover.

Transformers has done it multiple times with many franchises (with mostly little success, but that's just my opinion) and nothing has changed. The world continued. Transformer toys continued to be produced. blah blah blah.

Don't like it? Don't read it. Unbunch your panties and go find some bigger travesty to get upset over.

This might have been a fun and interesting little crossover if it came out six or seven years ago when Friendship is Magic was still in its prime (excuse the pun), but a it is, it feels a bit late to the party.

Yeah a crossover with Prime would make more sense, but this is fine.

yeah they are doing it but I doubt they'll include/introduce a strong male character within MLP cast.

well MASK was brought back but it was lack luster not very well executed.

Centurions isn't for Hasbro to do any with i'm afraid to say that belongs to the jack kirby estate.

They were right here complaining loudly and clearly. The links JelZe posted before are full of all the naysayers who crucified the very idea of ponies and Transformers interacting together.

Same with anytime a commercial from Hub Network was news'd if it featured ponies or any other "girl show" characters along with Transformers, which happened often since the Hub tended to mix and match its programming casts in its network commercials.

For good or ill, at Least some of us remember. Most of my frustration stems from the fact that many of the reactions I'm seeing are from people who think this is a new concept, a first time event etc...

Maybe there is some truth to the notion that many fandoms collective memories don't exceed 5 years.

It is fascinating to see how much a girls toy brand interacting with a boys toy brand can bring out so much sexism and insecurity in a fandom.

It just makes me feel old. My daughter was 5 when MLP FIM and TF Prime first came out, next week she turns 15! Of course she stopped watching it long ago, but I did get her that first comic back in 2013. My kids are still fun, but there are times I miss when they were younger

Maybe, but IIRC the last two crossovers (Star Trek and Ghostbusters) were pretty well-received, so if this and the Terminator crossover turn out well too.

I'm cautiously optimistic. If they get this right, it could be a lot of fun.

And here's the "official" reveal of the Twilight Sparkle Prime mock-up (first shown 2014 but I believe it was made in 2012 or 2013). It wasn't made to fit any theme but as a stand-alone.
I'd originally wanted to do Shining Armor because of all the... shining armor. But the "mane" character had a better chance.

I'm not sure how many more shades of purple could have gone into the mock-up lol #botcon #transformers

Over at the Hollywood Soapbox, the Soapbox crew got the chance to conduct an interview with the creative team for the upcoming Transformers / My Little Pony crossover event, which will run for 4 issues and, prior to the coronavirus pandemic, was set to come out next month. The creative team included in this round of interviews includes writers Ian Flynn and Sam Maggs, as well as artist Jack Lawrence.

Were you skeptical at first that My Little Pony and Transformers could come together for a comic book?

IAN FLYNN: Not skeptical, more like delightfully baffled. With a little bit of work and research, they came together surprisingly easily. It’s like mixing up your toy boxes and playing with everything.

SAM MAGGS: I thought the idea was both absolutely brilliant and absolutely bonkers. I pitched on it immediately.

How difficult was it to have two artistic styles for this four-part series?

JACK LAWRENCE: I didn’t actually approach it as two artistic styles as such. It’s different characters as part of the same animated TV show like, say, Bobby interacting with Uni in the ’80s Dungeons & Dragons show. The two character types are built differently, but exist in the same world.

What do you like about Twilight Sparkle as a character?

SAM MAGGS: I think I find Twilight Sparkle relatable, personally. She loves to read and learn and can get lost in books. But over the course of the series, she’s really come out of her shell, and that’s inspiring.

What do you think is the most appealing aspect of the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic series for its fans?

JACK LAWRENCE: I think everything about it is appealing. The characters and world designs are just so pleasing to the eye, which draws you in, but then it’s very, very funny at times — and the stories are really good. You don’t necessarily expect ‘epic’ from My Little Pony, but that’s what you get!
