That's what I was wondering. I mean, if it's going to go back and use Universe Ratchet it might as well have used Classics Astrotrain. Also interesting that some characters are represented by both their Generations and Legends figures.
And Powerglide shows up twice in the promo art, once as Superion's gun and again flying. Oops.

I think, maybe, that flying one is meant to be the new Generations Jetfire.

The main difference is that where in the existing games, your units had set values, in this version each mode has different values that change when you transform them between rounds. It does also include Combiners in game play, but you wil have to collect each team member, level them to max, and then merge them. Combiners will take up 2 spots on the battle field.
It has been in limited release to Canadian IPs for a couple weeks, so I've been playing about 7-8 days now.
It certainly looks if they follow the same formulas that it will have the whole pay to win aspect in there, but more for the causal player to take away than say Legends does.
Characters who have shown up in this version so far:
In game progress:
Cliffjumper
Acid Storm
Gears
Thundercracker
Jumkheap
Bumblebee (scout mold)
Starscream
Wheeljack

Today, DeNA and Hasbro revealed a variety of new character art for TRANSFORMERS: BATTLE TACTICS, a new turn-based tactical combat game coming soon to iOS and Android.
TRANSFORMERS: BATTLE TACTICS is the first game that lets players command a team of both AUTOBOT and DECEPTICON characters, strategically utilizing powerful abilities to defeat their opponents. TRANSFORMERS: BATTLE TACTICS will feature over 75 iconic characters including classic heroes like Optimus Prime and Bumblebee joining forces with baddies like Megatron and Starscream. The art style mixes retro 80’s appeal with an anime twist that will resonate with Transformers fans both young and old.

In addition, here are some character bios DeNA provided to us:
Bumblebee
Autobots (Soldier)
Bumblebee is always ready for anything. He has an arsenal of gadgets designed just for him, which he can use to meet the needs of any mission. No matter where the Decepticons hide - whether they flee to the deepest ocean, or disappear into the clouds - Bumblebee is ready to pursue and destroy them.
Wheeljack
Autobots (Soldier)
Wheeljack was onboard the Ark ship that initially crashed on Earth. Equal parts medic and inventor, most of the Autobots' scientific advances have come from Wheeljack's lab. Enterprising and outgoing, he's always one of the most popular Autobots. His best invention is a near-impenetrable faceplate, which has been handy when volatile prototype inventions have literally exploded in his face. In combat, his seismic batons ward off enemies.
Alpha Bravo
Autobots | Aerialbots (Hunter)
The newest member of the Aerialbots and the only member that is not a jet plane. His assault helicopter mode gives the team a member with VTOL and hovering capabilities, but he cannot match his teammates' top speed. Being the "new guy" and the slowest flyer of the group makes him feel like he has something to prove. Carries four tracker missiles that process a "spark lock" to their targets. With fellow Aerialbots forms "Superion."
Megatron
Decepticons (Soldier)
There was a time when the name of Megatron was honored by many across Cybertron But power inevitably corrupts, and none are so powerful as mighty Megatron. Long ago, he forgot he was a hero, and became nothing more than a tyrant. The war he launched eventually drained his home planet of life. Not even the death of a world could sate his hunger for conquest.
Starscream
Decepticons (Scout)
Starscream commands one of the most fearsome military units from Cybertron: the Seekers. The squadron has brought him great power and glory, but that means nothing as long as Megatron is the one who rules the Decepticons. Until Starscream can claim that throne, he will have to be content to be king of the Seekers.
Thundercracker
Decepticons (Scout)
Thundercracker lives on fear. Special materials in his jet frame allow him to unleash controlled sonic detonations that can be heard 200 miles away. Streaking across the sky at Mach 6, he wants his enemies to hear him before they see him. He wants them to know he's coming, and cower in fear at their impending doom.
Drag Strip
Decepticons | Stunticons (Soldier)
Nasty and underhanded - would rather be scrapped than lose. Prone to overheating, but possesses the greatest pure speed of any Stunticon. Adopting the alt-mode of an advanced concept Formula One race car gives him a sixth gear the Autobots cannot match, but leaves him with a slightly fragile vehicle mode. His fierce competitive streak and unmatched speed makes him the ideal "tip of the spear" for the Stunticon forces. With fellow Stunticons forms "Menasor."

Yes and no....
I've played the game it's based on for a few months, and have not spent a dime without feeling like i'm missing out, but it's a question of how you play.
I've just kept chipping away at the main story line, and while it will take time, cash isn't needed.
Once they start events however.....
To use their other game for example, in the All Hail Megatron event, without spending money I finished with the Starscream, Soundwave, Insecticon, and Sideswipe rewards, and felt good. I'f you would be OK with the same, then you'll be fine.
If you feel left out because you didn't get a top reward (Prime or Megatron is this case) without using cash, or you are a completest who must have everything, then yes have your Visa card on standby.

I haven't had any problems, then again I am playing on a superior Android OS
What did impress me though was the tech support response. During the game, characters sometimes come out with movie quotes... Unless you're on iOS apparently.
Anyway, one of these supposed movie quotes was "Turbo rodding young punk..." This irritated me so much that I e-mailed DeNA and they responded within hours, saying they'd consider fixing it to the correct "Turbo revving young punk." Dunno if they did or didn't, but I haven't seen it appear since. More than that, I was impressed with their speedy reply - I was expecting my fanrage to be shoveled into their junk e-mail and disregarded. Good to know someone's at least pretending to listen lol

The speculation so far sees Viper as a straightforward Legend Class Powerglide repaint in blue and red, but Cyclonus may very well be a heavy retool of Voyager Silverbolt with a dashing purple deco. Check out the images below, and head to this thread to discuss the rumour. Comment below to have your say on the game!

I'm glad they're doing remolds and premolds that make sense based on the mold in itself, but some of the results - like Ultra Cyclonus or Cyclonus Maximus, wearing a Legends-class Rodimus on his chest - are just.... odd.

It's still in open Beta testing, Canadian accounts have access because the studio is in Vancouver.
As they just updated the game with the new characters and a couple small changes, and it seems in line with the original Battle tactics when it had it's full release as long as no major bugs pop up, the full launch shouldn't be that far off.
Just hold out a little longer.
Loving Viper, hopefully there will be other franchise blenders coming.

I long for a proper tactical c&c style game where you have to go out a build your bases... Harvest energon and use your troops' abilities to outflank and defeat the opponents. With bases progressing till you build metroplex or trypticon that launch a final attack by transforming and stomping towards the enemy base

Was anyone really surprised by this? He's the equivalent of the counter to Ultra Prime. That's all. It's possible he might get new limbs eventually like prime is but for now it's fine. It won't be in the comics, it's just a toy.
I'd be cool with a scourge limb maybe because then BOOM! Scourge and sweeps.

This has to be something goofy that Hasbro cooked up since he's time hopping with the LL crew and not having anything to do with the stuff happening with Galvatron on Earth.
I'm with you, this is just going to screw up everything they've accomplished with his character in the comics if they have him side with Galvatron especially if it's done for the sole purpose of giving legitimacy to Hasbros' dumb idea.

He won't be. Combiner wars is only a 6 issue event for IDW. The only bots from the lost light that are crossing over are the protectobots(which Im shocked they're being included in the comic). This is just a toy and that's all. Combiner Wars is going be a toy line going into 2016. It's a way to get a lot of combiners and just for fun. You don't like Galvatronus? Fine, don't buy Cyclonus or just keep him in his individual mode. It's like Huffer, windcharger, thundercracker, Megatron, Armada Megatron, Huffer and Bomshell. Just toys to go under the subtitle.
It's like throwing a fit were getting this and not other classic combiners. It's going till 2016, were probably going to see some of them later. Calm your tits people.

Never said I didn't like the toy idea. In fact it's a shame I see more Cyclonus in the pic, less Galvatron, but cool nonetheless. Just inquiring who is going to show up for Combiner Wars. Hoping we get Abominus, I know we got one during Prime's run, would like to see in this set, or better yet Predaking in the same way as Devastator, all Voyagers. One can hope and wish right?

Devastator is a one and done thing like metroplex was. Could we get Predaking or Abominus? It's totally possible, but it'd be a voyager and four deluxes or we'll get at least one more original Combiner after the fan built team or...they will be the last one. Who knows. It's great we're getting combiners to begin with. Makes me think the only reason were getting combiners is because every character but a couple from 84-87 have now been modernized.
As much of a fanboy I am, I also look at these from the other point of view. If you make the predacons or terrorcons, can you retool/redeco any of them? Probably not so you're going to make those molds and use them once, or fun pub will use them someday for whatever crap they can think of. Or, you can play it safe and use the more popular combiners that can be retooled and repainted over and over like three of the protectobots being retools of stunticons and aerialbots which make sense. It's close enough. I won't be surprised if we get the combaticons and swindle is Offroads mold, vortex is a deco of alpha bravo and this is extreme but brawl is rook and maybe a new blastoff. It works. I'm a huge fanboy but I'm just happy with what we get.

Would it be more legitimate to gripe about not getting non-classic combiners like Landfill or Ruination?

Nothing not even a redeco of the Metrotitan or Necrotitan.

You're right, the animal-based combiners are too individually specific for retool purposes.
Sorry Seacons, your not up to bat.
