We recently reported about a new redeceo of the Classics Optimus Prime mold and there were a few theories.

Was this a product that has yet to see release? Or an unannounced edition that has since been canceled after some were already produced?

Well it turns out it is indeed an upcoming product that was not released at the time. As fellow Seibertronians Emerge and Sabrblade informed us, this is actually part of a Platinum set featuring redecos of both Classics Optimus Prime and Megatron.

We know this now because Allspark member lastmaximal found the actual set at a specialty store in the Philippines. It seems that the copies found on e-bay are the finished product since the deco is unaltered between what we have seen and what is shown on the box with Optimus having unpainted translucent blue parts in the front of his vehicle mode.

Megatron himself has the translucent plastic theme going on as well with the gun shell being a translucent red. Also, the rerelease of the Classics Megatron gun toy means that unlike what was stated on TF Wiki, Hasbro's policies for these types of transforming toys (toy guns of any kind) are more lax then previously believed.

So, is anybody interested in picking this set up? let us know on the boards!

Looking at these pictures again, I'm surprised that they haven't gone to town on megs as a nerf crossover product (he is a nerf gun isn't he?)

As for their policies on toy guns, I never thought much on it as it comes from the owners of the nerf brand, a brand that does nothing but toy guns.

Those are gaudy as hell and I dig that about them. Even though the clear bits make Prime's alt mode look unfinished I like how it makes those parts stand out less in bot mode. I dig the decos and I don't own either of these molds, so I'll be keeping an eye on this one.

To be fair, this is Hasbro Asia rather than Hasbro proper, and I imagine that this mightn't make it to brick-and-mortar stores in the U.S., so we very well probably won't be seeing this Megatron at U.S. retail, making it be online only like the majority of Platinums have been for the U.S. So the statement of "We cannot sell the Classics Megatron mold at U.S. retail anymore" from Hasbro proper may still hold up.

So there would be a different law between what Target stocks on shelves and what they only have online?

Also, while the Year of the "__" figures are Hasbro Asia, I thought the other platinums were decided by Hasbro proper, no? The prices have been a bit more fair for those.

Yes, Megs is based on an N-Strike Maverick. This is one of those obvious things that Hasbro doesn't understand (like a TF vs G.I. Joe line). They've even made a few Transformers Nerf guns.

Goddamnit Hasbro. I really want a version of the Classics Prime mold but that deco is pretty boring (though I reckon a bit of paint on the clear plastic sides would improve it a lot). Meanwhile, I don;t like Megatron as a gun but that Megatron in those colours looks fantastic.

ARGH.

Megs and Optimus look pretty damn good here. Anyone who don't already have either of these molds should defenitely pick them up. AND DONT WAIT FOR A SALE. Unless they ask for a stupid 200$CAN TrU price, this is a set that will me scalped to oblivion if it ever get on clearance. Hell, maybe even at full price.

I already own Hekei Optimus and Megatron, plus classic Ultra magnus, Nemesis Prime, and Megatron. So I'm gona pass. Any beginner TF collector would be mad to pass this set up.

...

I wonder if that Optimus will have a floppy rooftop like in the AoE 2 pack? :-?

Just when I want to get out of CHUG, they bring me back in!! I'm looking forward to the Junkion set too, stupid me and my 30 anniversary of The Transformers: The Movie nostalgia!!

How about I send you the original Classics versions (complete with boxes!!) and I get the new ones. Sounds great. You'll see them when we get confirmation of release in the U.S. :-D

Tempting, but I really like the look of these.

The giant Autobot insignia, that wick Megadeco. This set is really doing it for me. I'm glad I skipped that AoE set with the classics prime. Too much chrome for my tastes.

Um, wat.

This was pretty unexpected. Unlike the Junkion Clash set, this doesn't appeal to me at all, mainly because I already have the original uses of these molds. The translucent parts really kill it for me, and so feel like Megatron's got too much red on him. This is one of those things I can breathe a sigh of relief and say "Pass".

I really like Megatron, but I'm surprised to see so much.. not-hate for Prime :-?

His bot mode looks fine, but that truck mode as others have said just looks like an unpainted proto. Two additional paint apps on those giant clear side panel arm flap thingies and we coulda had a real nice looking Prime.

I've already got the Transformers Cloud version of the Classics Prime mold and the Transformers United version of the Classics Megatron mold. It's hard to top those for G1 screen accuracy. The runner up would be the Age of Extinction Evolution 2-Pack version of Classics Prime for G1 toy accuracy. These just...don't do it for me. Prime would look better with painted side paneling in the truck cab and without some of those Classics 2006 extraneous details, like the blue shoulders, yellow paint in the head crest, and thigh-high boots, but Megatron just looks ridiculously gaudy. Way too much red.

Ya, the truck panels are slightly whack, but that bot mode looks awesome. Look at his two tone thighs. That Meg deco is AWESOME! I like these decos for the same reason I liked the Triple Changers. They are over the top, make no sense, and full of whimsy.

I don't get the hate on the almost-all blue cab on optimus Prime. It look pretty amazing IMO. I also love the red on Megs.

I may buy on clearance if the clearance price is under 80$CAN.

Agreed, but I see what they were going for. Unfourtunately, giving them both translucent parts just doesn't work as well for Prime (primarily because Megatron's translucent parts were always meant to be mostly unpainted.

That said, this is Optimus Prime and Megatron that we're talking about, so I expect "unusual" designs for Platinum releases. If you've graduated to "Platinum-Collector" status, shouldn't you already have a logically detailed OP by now? (No offense if anyone doesn't, but Classics and Henkei Primes are easy to find on eBay for reasonable prices. That should be your first stop.)

You never know, could have been a smart move. Some of these platinum sets are ridiculously priced and if this is the case with this one and you only would have wanted the Prime, then you are still a winner :)

This set will probably be over 60$ (I am estimating at least 80$). So, if you just want the Optimus Prime, then I suggest you just buy the individual prime off e-bay. We now know that its not a test shot or anything but the actual same toy you'd get with this set. Plus no shipping or tax cost and they are going for about 50$ a piece. If you dont care about the megatron and want one udner 60$ (just prime) then just buy from Lena.

i already know this is going to be way overpriced so im calling it a pass right off the bat, now if it turns out that its 50 or under than i might say sure why not but i highly doubt it since all the platinum set so far have been way overpriced.

But on the topic of selling toy guns it has actually gotten better out there, i was in walmart the other day and saw a bunch of toy guns. And actual toy guns not nerf ripoffs, m16s & m9s with scopes and silencers, cowboy styled shotguns, a couple of years ago none of this could be found. I think as long as its brightly colored it can be sold, so theres a good chance this will see wide release. The real question is will distribution drop the ball like they did with so many other releases.
Re: First Image of New Platinum Classics Optimus and Megatron Set (1758783)

I'd say the Megatron is the selling point of this set It's not often I get to say this these days but I like his decoration overall - perhaps I would have prefered signal red over Signal Orange on his "Safety parts" and perhaps the old idea of a G2 Green or Purple one might have been fun to see. but this colour scheme is nice the clear red being a bit over done is a little odd - but since he is a laser cannon he pulls it off and with those pieces left unpainted he now looks like a new deco and not just a variation of the Henkei/United colours.

He is naturally very different from the old Hasbro off-white one though.

I was wondering what "Head Canon" would be for such a colour scheme I often like to have the excuse to pretend that a significant colour difference either represents use of a different fuel Nucleon or dark Energon say, or is armour for a specific purpose or simply that it isn't Megatron at all but is Archforce or Megaplex. The only problem with that is that Megaplex is Grey and Blue not Red & silver. But the deco is not that unlike the Black Megatron gun toy either though.

So a big positive for Megs (I hope the set gets a wide release).

Now Optimus is a tricky one - he has some positives the robot mode deco might actually have to much paint - that yellow has a horrible tendency to chip for example.

But the back of the cab shows that the template underneath the design of the toy is the 2006 "Classics" Optimus Prime (Rather than say the Henkei one). The original EHobby Clear one works much better - so perhaps if he'd had clear legs at least that might excuse the blue panels.

It's a shame they didn't make the side panels opaque and then paint the side windows and then perhaps use clear pieces on the arms or legs instead. even a clear red gun/ air dam might have worked.

But much like the second-edition-First edition Prime Optimus this is a toy that has key panels unpainted that are begging to be painted - but that in this case at least are going to be a bit of a pain to do so.

Might be easier to just swap parts with an earlier Optimus toy since the spray mask is identical. It might have been fun if they'd put the giant Autobot Logos from Shattered Glass Optimus Prime on the sides that would have looked suitably bonkers to have 3 huge Autobot logos on him.

That said as a toy to dress up in Dia Commander Armour or leave in bot mode he's perfectly serviceable. It's just that Truck mode door are one of Hasbro's worst crimes against Painting to date.

Personally I'd have preferred a G2 themed set - that would have been a fantastic complement to the G2 Combiner Wars sets.

Even an Optimus with Black legs would have been a nice change. But if a lot of people don't take to this Optimus he could be a useful "resource" for scrapping for parts.

Overall I like the set much more than some, but if they have a silly price on it It will just continue to give me a good chuckle at Hasbro's expense.

----

P.s. I would still like a Moulded in Colour normal Classics Mirage where he's the same aps as the normal one but made from Transparent clear and clear blue plastic - essentially like the Takara Electro Disruptor version but with blue tinted clear plastic instead of grey smoke plastic.

They seem to like their clear plastic lately what with Optimus Primal being partially clear too.

It's a shame the "Megatron From the Depths" set never came out that is crazy that the Voyager ROTF Megatron Mould was only made in green by Hasbro - they repainted Sideways a million times and yet couldn't make a grey Megatron toy.

Especially vexing when the Voyager is a better mould than the leader class one is.
pity no one has thought to update and upscale that Megatron yet.
He seems to have suffered from being developed to early in the design process meaning the toy looks nothing much like the final CGI we could really do with a revisit to ROTF Megatron.

I'm not saying I want it "To accurate" the smaller arm isn't especially appealing for example. But why not release the Movie Voyager in another colour - heck why not make a Voyager DOTM Megatron in grey or darker green instead of tan ?

There is a KO of Voyager Galvatron that is painted in silver tones and that looks pretty terrific. So that also makes you wonder why no AOE Galvatron repaint either ? It looks like Wei Jiang is my new best friend when it comes to the things you might actually want and Hasbro is trailing way way behind.

A few things I wanted to mention.

To those asking about a wide release, this set wil always be an exclusive in one way or another. I have no doubt it will come to the states, but it will be an exclusive at tru or walmart or another specific retailer. It wil never truly be a wide release like the G2 Combier Wars figures are.

That's some impressive paintwork he's got going on (not to mention the massive tampograph). Really goes against those complaining that it's "lazy".

Yeah, yeah, the clear parts are unpainted, but that's obviously to mirror the clear red parts on Megatron. At least they're trying new deco ideas.

Want to know what lazy is? Slapping red paint on those same parts for the fifth time.

Don't get me wrong. I love this mold--it's what got me back into collecting in the first place. I happily have it in red, white, and black. Also, if I could afford them, I'd have it in orange and purple too.

But that's the thing, I still want variety. If you want me to get another red & blue one, you gotta at least move those colors around! ;)^

Yes, the G1 seekers reached that limit. Hence why they had to redo that mold (they even took the time to write different molded copyright info, hence you can see which uses the new mold).

The new colors for Classics Prime looks like they took the AoE 2-Pack Classics Prime and Crossed him with Cloud Convoy. By far Henkei Convoy is the absolute best as far as color make up and screen accuracy, second is Cloud Convoy, and third is 2006 Classics Prime.

For me it's the blue-tinted windows that give him a more solid look. I hated the clear windows on the AoE two pack. I see this Prime also has those clear windows as well...bummer. I still want a CLoud or Henkei Oprimus however I'm happy with 2006 Classics Prime for now.

That Megatron is ugly man. For that mold it's United, then Henkei and you can keep the rest.

Obviously? I don't know what you mean when they obviously painted Megatron's barrel silver. If they had left Megatron's "wings" completely unpainted then, yes, I could see a common theme here, but they didn't. At the very least they should have finished what they started on Prime and done the rest of his stripe and the headlights if they're going to paint details on Megatron's clear parts. I don't mind the clear sides per se, but I do think there's something wrong with not giving both figures equal treatment.

I think what Randy meant by common theme is that Megsies wings are totally red inside. While painted on the outside (not much though) he's clear and paintless inside. So yeah, him and Prime complement each other. Megs just does it better.

To those asking about a wide release, this set wil always be an exclusive in one way or another. I have no doubt it will come to the states, but it will be an exclusive at tru or walmart or another specific retailer. It wil never truly be a wide release like the G2 Combier Wars figures are.

Also, here are some more images of Prime:

If they'd blended to blue into the red with some solid blue paint and picked out he windows in another tint - and also not used half a set of stripes on the side then I'd be fine with it - I'd still think it was weird but I wouldn't say it was Lazy.

This would have suited me better.

Yes, Megs is based on an N-Strike Maverick. This is one of those obvious things that Hasbro doesn't understand (like a TF vs G.I. Joe line). They've even made a few Transformers Nerf guns.

At the point of classics megatron's first release, he was often compared to the nerf maverick.

Meagtron's clear red makes it look like a variant of the nerf strongarm. one of TRU's exclusive colours.

The clear blue plastic looks decent on prime in bot mode. Probably trying to "hide" the side panels on the arm. Looks horrid in vehicle mode.

It amazes me we have not had a diaclone Magnus apart from the movie preview edition.
