Rassoul Edji was one of the lead VFX designers on Rise of the Beasts, and is responsible for, among other things, the head face and battle mask of Optimus Prime. He took to Twitter to discuss at length about the process and studio notes he received from Paramount, including how the film was meant to be a soft prequel to the 2007 movie. Read on for all the info.
I modelled the head, face, and battle mask for Optimus Prime for #Transformers ROTB.
I also designed his new "centurion" open battle mask look along with it's animation.
The director wanted the face to resemble the face from the 2007 Transformers film as ROTB was a soft-prequel to it but also wanted it to be tweaked to fit the new design and for us to give it some new unique features.
This is where we came up with the new mask design which doesn't get entirely hidden when open. Instead, it gets stored on the side of his cheeks, like a Roman centurions helmet.
The head design is derived from his model from the 2018 Bumblebee film to keep some consistency with that film too as ROTB was also a soft-sequel to Bumblebee. There are new pieces, adjusted proportions, and reworks to detailing in ROTBs version.
The face proportions are modified from the 2007 face to be a lot wider and beefier, matching his new head shape and look.
I redesigned and built the eyes from scratch using our kitbash pieces like I did for all the Maximals and Mirage. The studio decided against going for the holographic eyes look from the 2018 Bumblebee film but rather wanted a more simple look in between the 2007 and the 2018 eyes.
I added a lot of small mechanical details to his battle mask animation which we unfortunately never get to see in the film. For example, I designed a fully functional mechanism which pushes his chin piece back when his mask closes. This was very cool when it was visible, our Animation Director and VFX Supervisors were super excited about it, but unfortunately no shot showed it off in the final film.
It was a lot of fun to help model and design Optimus Prime for this film. I'm happy I got to contribute to such an iconic character.

Ruairidh MacNeill modelled the body for Optimus
Let me clarify that despite being a Lead on this show, I personally did not decide to do any of these changes. All of these decisions came from senior leadership in the VFX studio, Paramount, and the director. We are usually provided with concept art or at least references for what needs to be done and we have to do it that way.
The only bit of this design which I had creative freedom for was the centurion battle mask, which also had a few different versions which I showed to the director, Paramount, and VFX leadership team for approval.
I’m glad the teams work on breathing emotions into his facial expressions paid off, I remember how hard everyone worked on them!
My personal favourite Optimus Prime design is the Dark of the Moon one so I do agree with you. I pushed back on some of the studio notes but at the end of the day we have to do what the studio tells us to do.
It was decided by the leadership team to add a bit of deformation to the faces of the characters to help them emote.
The reason [to show his face under the mask] was because they needed him to emote and it’s really difficult to do that with just the mask. The 2018 Prime is more of a cameo than anything so it works, for this film they wanted him to show emotions through his facial performance.
Despite what the director has said online, we never got the note [to make the face look like Cullen] from the studio or from him. The official note we received from Paramount was "make it look like Optimus from 2007"
Perhaps the 2007 design was inspired by Peter Cullens face and that's what he meant.
[There are] Around 1,350 [pieces on the head alone] if I remember correctly.

Good news for Transformers fans and Hot Wheels fans. The final case assortment for 2024 (the Q case) has made its way to Walmarts in the US. This case includes the Bumblebee release in a gold deco, which fans have appropriately dubbed as Goldbug. It was found at Walmart by Manny. These gold Bumblebees are 1 per case of 72, but they will be repacked and more abundant in the case assortment following this one. It is not a treasure hunt item.
Also, there is a reported error where the wrong VW base is used (the original, rather than using the new base that shows BB’s head) so that’s another collectible to watch out for.
Manny’s post also said that he found Track Fleet Optimus Prime at Walmart, which many fans are still on the lookout for. The original post comes from the Botposting Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/share/19Mnj3bM ... tid=K35XfP

It took many years of nominations, but Transformers has finally been inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame for 2024. Transformers will be joined by My Little Pony and Phase 10, beating out other nominees Apples to Apples, balloons, Choose Your Own Adventure gamebooks, Hess Toy Trucks, Pokémon Trading Card Game, remote-controlled (R/C) vehicles, Sequence, stick horse, and trampoline. Organizers The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York now has the three winners on display as part of their National Toy Hall of Fame exhibit.
The Strong had this to say about Transformers:
About Transformers: Hasbro, Inc. first offered Transformers, a toy line of action figures that change their shapes, in the mid-1980s. Marketed with an elaborate backstory supported by a Marvel comic book series, a cartoon television series, animated movies, electronic games, consumer goods, and even its own cereal, Transformers have remained popular ever since. Their popularity has been fueled by additional movies, television shows, and comic books. For more than 40 years now, the appeal of Transformers is, in part, that the toys do what kids do anyway—change the toy to suit the needs of play.
Says Chris Bensch, chief curator, “Transformers enjoy such popularity, in part, because Hasbro has used tried-and-true marketing methods—the multimedia venues for toy-related shows, books, and movies; related consumer products; and new variations and characters regularly added to the line—to keep the toy in front of American kids. But the toys are also popular because they are so suited to the ways kids play. The toy line feeds kids’ imaginations and fantasy play.”
Congrats to the toys that have brought every one of us at Seibertron together!

One of the main obstacles with the Transformers Earthspark was that it was behind Paramount +, which is not one of the main streaming services a family has. Well, if you have Netflix instead, then we have great news for you. The first 18 episodes of EarthSpark are now on Netflix, and they're all normal-length. Meaning the two-parters that Paramount+ has smooshed together as double-length episodes are the individual versions.
Hopefully this is a much easier way for more people to have access to the show around the world and for younger fans to discover it.

Today marks the day that Transformers One starts its next distribution phase as it goes to Paramount +. There, families that have the service will be able to discover it at no extra charge. We'll see how it registers on the charts in the weeks to come.
We have a lot more new regarding this film. Christopher Batty was the cinematographer on Transformers One and sat down for an interview with Animation World Network. You can read that interview here: https://www.awn.com/animationworld/chri ... ormers-one

Wild title, I know. But did you know that the only Funko Pop from Beast Wars so far was Cheetor and that the only way to get him was by redeeming a token that could only be purchased with crypto currency? This is not a joke, Cheetor was part of Funko's NFT release where buying Funko NFTs would give you a chance to get a token that could be redeemed for a physical item. And these tokens could be purchased (and sold) through the droppp.io marketplace where it could only be purchased with crypto currency. And some hardcore fans did all that.
But you (probably) won't need to since the Funko line is now expanding to Beast Wars in 2025. The news comes from Skittlerampage who pulled from various Twitter account. The rumours are that next year we will get BW Megatron, Optimus Primal, Rhinox and Blackarachnia. That does mean that Cheetor remains a crypto exclusive for now.
Image of Funko Cheetor which remains an exclusive for now:
In other funko Transformers news, we did get an image of an upcoming Soundwave Funko Pop which has a helmet which you can open up to reveal one of his cassette bots controlling him, men in black style.

Somehow, Hero Mashers returned. They are back in MixMashers form, and we have images of the first 4 thanks to Amazon Australia. Indeed, while the name has changed the gimmick and toy is very similar to the Hero Mashers. It is cool to see how much Optimus Primal has risen to the status of a primary character within Transformers since the first four characters released are him and Bumblebee, in the standard class, along with Optimus and Megatron in a more expensive package due to extra accessories which augment their form.
You can check out the images below along with the listings.

Some sad news to share this evening. Tony Todd, who voiced the title character in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, as well as Transformers:Prime Dreadwing, has passed away at the age of 69. He died at his home in Los Angeles on November 6th.
While Mr Todd was most known to Transformers fans for those two roles, he also was a well-known actor in other major roles such as the lead in the "Candyman" series of films, as well as Kurn, the brother of the character Lieutenant Worf in the Star Trek universe.

We knew we'd get a Prima toy in 2025, but what did you think it would tur into? Well now we actually have a clue. Some images of a test shot have appeared on Baidu for a figure which we are currently assuming ot be Prima, based on the chest. The colors are not relevant as this is a test shot, but what is extremely revealing is the alt mode elements. We see wheels in the legs as well as a backpack resembling an Orion Pax/Kup like vehicle front. So the very first Transformer would have a concept alt mode similar to the ultimate (and 13th) Prime, Optimus. So it's like poetry, it rhymes.
This is set to be a voyager figure. You'll let us know what you think.

Back in August we got our first look at the T-Spark Synergenex line featuring a Transformers crossover with Godzilla. A few months later and pre-orders are now here! Now, this line didn't have a great reception when it was first announced but there has been at least a little interest in seeing Studio Series Grimlock slightly retooled into a Megatron cosplaying as a discount Godzilla while the other is a very gray Legacy Laser Optimus Prime repaint. But the good news is these are actually fairly cheap, all things considered. Both figures are sold at the Japanese retail price of 9,350 JPY, but Amazon Japan is pricing them tentatively at 8,603 JPY which about the price of a Hasbro Leader at around $56 USD. And like I said, that's tentative, Amazon hasn't reduced the price yet, which is good because you're still going to be charged for shipping. The good news there is that both figures are being released on May 31 in Japan so you can split the shipping on the two and save a little over having to ship them at different months if you choose to go this route.
Here are the Amazon Japan pre-orders, but they'll be available basically everywhere in Japan since these aren't exclusives.

We want to thank xrotorstormx and EmoTim to let us know of Ollie's incredible offer on the second Jurassic Park crossover set. The set is now only $20 and even cheaper with a coupon, as shown on their advert. This, along with the remaining Beast Wars reissues, will be the main Transformers toys they receive for now.
In other deal news, the Walmart exclusive Thundertron set dropped $15 and is now available for $45. This set seems to be online only in the US.

The Transformers Earthspark line isn't fully dead yet. We got a whole new batch of episodes last month or so and now we have word that there will be even more toys coming out in 2025. And better yet, these will be deluxes and one of them is Hashtag which means Hasbro will end up giving us deluxe figures of all Terrans. The other deluxes are Spitfire (redeco of Twitch), Cyber Glow Megatron (another redeco), Soundwave and Cosmos. Those last two are especially interesting, as Soundwave has quite the cool design on the show. Cosmos had some really odd proportions so we will see how that is rendered in toy form.

It's a sure thing now, the Hot Wheels world has got themselves a new chase figure. We now know that Barricade has gotten a revised version which will be what is sent out to retailers from here on out and indeed, the words "to punish and enslave" are no longer written on the side. This was also confirmed through an instagram shared below, along with an image of the change in livery.

A new Transformers line from Takara Tomy has been leaked by TFW2005 user lord ginrai called Transformers Wild King. Before we get into this I will point out that sites are being asked to remove the pictures so you'll have to use your imagination here (or hunt them down). A sales sheet for Japanese retailers is circulating for the new line expected to be released in April 2025 meaning pre-orders are imminent. The line is built around a play feature called "Wildoking" (wild + dock + king) allowing Optimus Prime and Megatron (dubbed Energy Masters) to combine with transforming robot animals called Energy Beasts). Figures will be released both individually and in sets.
That's not all, ahead of release they'll also be launching an Animated series on YouTube in March!
Here's what the lineup looks like and what you should expect from the line. Prices indicate this will be a budget line and images imply they'll have limited articulation.
Energy Masters – ¥4,750 ($31 USD)
-WKM-01 Energy Master Optimus Prime (looks reminiscent of Energon Prime)
-WKM-02 Emergy Master Megatron (tank)
Energy Beasts – ¥2,750 ($18 USD
-WKB-01 Energy Beast Rightol (Giraffe, looks a lot like Longrack)
-WKB-02 Energy Beast Hydrophant (Elephant)
-WKB-03 Energy Beast Captain Vulca (T-Rex)
-WKB-04 Energy Beast Reefback (Triceratops)
-WKB-05 Energy Beast Ignite Bite (Wolf or Lion?)
-WKB-06 Energy Beast Sbilichuan(?) (Spinosaurus)
The Spinosaurus appears to be a remold of the T-Rex.
Wildoking sets – ¥7,700 ($50 USD)
-WKS-01 Optimus Prime & Rightoll
-WKS-02 Megatron & Captain Vulca
Names are far from final, some are probably not even close (Rightol is probably Lightall). Also note that there seems to be an elemental theme going on with the Beasts that will certainly play into their combined forms. We know the giraffe and T-rex can form arms and others will also form legs while there also appears to be interchangeable heads and armor.
With less than six months between now and release are you excited about a new Japanese exclusive budget line? Let us know in the Energon Pub forums!

While caught up in the excitement of Age of Primes Megatronus and the glorious return of plastic window boxes during the Sunday 1027 event you might have missed a rather big Easter egg on the side of the box. We previously had a leaked listing stating the 2025 Titan for this line would be Star Convoy, renamed Star Optimus Prime. Not only does he appear on the side of Megatronus' box, but we're also getting an early look at what appears to be Liege Maximo who hasn't been leaked as part of the 2025 lineup as of yet (we are missing Leader for wave 3). Also Star Optimus Prime has a torso much more reminiscent of Powermaster Optimus Prime than the original Star Convoy figure, feel free to speculate on what that could mean.
The box also appears like it might form a panorama of all the Prime statues as more are released and lined up together.
While we've had many iterations of Optimus Prime and Megatronus/The Fallen and even a few Star Convoy figures and homages this is our first proper Liege Maximo, our only other figure is the Prime Master paired with the Skullgrin decoy armor in Power of the Primes. His design is based on his appearance at the end of Marvel's G2 comic line, though maybe a little leaner.
What do you think of this teaser of two more upcoming Primes? Let us know in the Energon Pub forums!
