Synopsis
Prison Break! After a daring escape, Optimus Prime, the Autobots, Scarlett, G.I. Joe and M.A.S.K. must venture into the heart of Cybertron to stop Cobra’s devastating weapon that will kill every Transformer on the planet!

Transformers News: Review of IDW First Strike #5 #HasbroFirstStrike #Transformers
the weapon is deadpan banter, obvs

Story

Mairghread Scott and David Rodriguez are working hard, there is no doubt about that, with several casts from books they have handled, and even more that they haven't. I have given the books so far a lot of grief too, for the approach to certain storylines and backstories, and I feel that having scheduled readings on time may have assuaged some of those grievances, too.

Arcee gets it

Which leads me to this: after having finally read the conclusion to Revolutionaries - which in one way or another was the direct lead, next to Optimus Prime (the others were much minor, all things considered) into First Strike - I can appreciate a lot more than in previous issues the various levels of parallels drawn for Baron Ironblood with the other unlikeable DAD in the series, Optimus himself. Plus, I can see a lot more of the humour in the overall script.

This is good joke

The very big cast was a lot more noticeable this time, but it didn't really put me off (Colton aside) - and it's really quite good to read and see some more flesh being added to Kreiger in the back-up story by John Barber, continuing the Iron axel of evil set-up alongside present events. He was still the one missing a lot of actual characterisation, other than Shazraella's quips, and we finally have some better looks at what he's doing and why he might be doing it.

Transformers News: Review of IDW First Strike #5 #HasbroFirstStrike #Transformers
#relationshipgoals

The plot armour, as other members of staff have called, around Scarlett is at the point of doing my head in; that I actually really want to know what on earth (/Cybertron?) is wrong with Baron Iron Cotton, and why he decided that the best way to solve his issues with aliens is to adopt standard conservative foreign policy. But with just one issue to go? I hope - and I like to believe that - Scott and Rodriguez are up to the challenge.

Art

The overall art direction for the issue, with Max Dunbar and Ander Zarate taking lines and colours, is the best that I've seen in the crossover so far, and the most consistent in both organic and technorganic designs, and there's a lot of really well brought out visual gags - but I'm still really not convinced about the compatibility of John Wycough inks on Dunbar's lines: they flatten a bit too much, and scenes lose a lot of their impact, even with Zarate's efforts on consistency.

Transformers News: Review of IDW First Strike #5 #HasbroFirstStrike #Transformers
See, I wanted to fully enjoy this a lot more

Much like my comments for the script, the back story on the backstory of Baron Ironblood's vault of villains is really quite pleasing from a visual perspective too: Netho Diaz, Walden Wong, and David Garcia Cruz do some good work on bringing the odd shiny darkness of Kreiger and his - probably worst of the lot, with Mayhem - tendencies towards whatever he's tending towards.

Transformers News: Review of IDW First Strike #5 #HasbroFirstStrike #Transformers
That Herr Half-Man to you

Gilberto Lazcano takes the lettering side, and there are some notable placements of speechbubbles to allow the script to shine through - especially with character interaction and comedic timings - and it's good to see some fun in the fontwork too, during louder scenes. The cover used for the thumbnail is one of two coloured by Thomas Teyowisonte Deer, with lineart by Whilce Portacio and the most TF-free of the lot - you can find all of the other variants in our Database entry for the issue, right here, including the excellent Jay Fosgitt one.

Thoughts
Spoilerish ahead

I've said this a lot already, but let me reiterate: I couldn't help but enjoy the story a lot more in this issue after my grievances with last time's, and with Revolutionaries #8 finally sedimenting - for me - some of the parallels being drawn that felt very out of nowhere until now. It's a shame when good writing gets hindered by logistics, and it's something IDW needs to find a way of addressing soon, for the sake of their creators as well as their readers.

Transformers News: Review of IDW First Strike #5 #HasbroFirstStrike #Transformers
*coff*

With an event and a cast this big (the two are very much related) there's bound to be some seeming inconsistencies or sidelining of characters - Windblade is perhaps the most erratic here - and some cameos that may come across as not ..the most apt - you'll see it directly when you read the book - and I'm still not entirely sold on the main threads running through First Strike. But, if nothing else, I do want to know what has happened, and how it will be resolved. I really, really do.

I like that 5 has some banter.

For the rest of the main story, I'm going to do what my momma taught me and not say anything else when I have nothing nice to say at all.

I enjoyed it a LOT more on my third read. I really did.
But I wanted to like it more, as I did with #3 and #4.

There's another crossover planned for next year. Adding in Revolution, this means IDW are in the midst of doing at least three big multi-franchise crossover events per year in a row.

this is whats bothering me the most.

i think IDW are making a massive mistake with the way theyre rolling these "events" out.

look at the marvel and DC universes. they worked fine for decades cause in the main crossovers were done between two or maybe three books. NOT the entire production line. events like that only really kicked in around the turn of the century and now theyre yearly events its turning off comic buyers BIG time.

ive been a fan of comics since the 70s but ive bascially sworn off everything cept the TF books which ive been getting up to the last relaunch and im ALREADY fuking lost as to whats going on and how im meant to follow it. im barely out a year FFS !

factor in a general dislike of most of the books they're crossing with and im left with no incentive to come back. its just doesnt feel organic.

IMO it'd be a better idea to make the "event" more focused. TF/ROM for instance- and just leave everyone else to get on with their own stories. then next year make it GI JOE and MASK .

What their doing right now not only feels like overkill, its making it a RIGHT pain to collect their trades if youve previously being collecting individual issues. case in point i dropped OPTIMUS PRIME cause i just dont like the art after the first six issues with the intenst of picking up the cheaper trades down the road.

low and behold OP trade 2 has the "ghost stories" annual i already have bound into it.

i can only imagine what its doing across the other books.

save the full universe crossovers for the truly special occasions as right now im getting FIERCE mid 90s xmen crossover fatigue, and im not even buying the books !

Eh, not a fan. I didn't like his work on Spider-Man and Wolverine comics either. Just not into his style at all.
It's weird how there's all that light behind them like it's supposed to be all dynamic and kinetic looking but the poses are all really stiff and dull.

Synopsis

War for the Core! Deep within Cybertron, the ultimate weapon to kill all Transformers is about to be activated! Meanwhile, Elita One plans to stop the weapon—by killing every human on Cybertron! Either way, looks like some species on Cybertron is going down unless Optimus Prime and Scarlett can save the day…

Image
That's one way of trying

Story

And so, the final issue of the second multi-franchise crossover of Hasbro properties from IDW Publishing comes to a close, with some definite repercussions on the satellite stories it spurred - and a distinct flavouring of corporate mandate that taints an otherwise not-that-bad story, if a little by the numbers in the overall plotting. Read on for some specifics!

Image
This whole page was fun, really

The issue does conclude pretty much as expected the bigger of the various threads set up by Mairghread Scott and David Rodriguez, with Scarlett and Joe Colton facing off against each other as the rest of the cast sort of feel accessory to the main showdown - but the sustained action sequence is very pleasing, as we've seen before from Scott, and the interactions make it perhaps more poignant than expected.

Image
Hammering the point

The coda story, which I mention this early as it picks up the main event of the issue and the arc, is probably the real treasure of the event and the actions of Colton and his band of villainous misfits - and it wonderfully built to fit previously explored and teased moments across the Transformers books in particular - including some from before IDW's presence.

Image
Hey Armada fans

The consequences, then, are varied, but they suffer from the sudden inclusion of property management and company announcements seen in the news cycle until now - see my opening comments - only really allowing the writers to do a lot with what little creative liberties they had in terms of ramifications and character storylines (can't remove all the players from future books, and got to introduce the new ones at some points)

Art

The artwork by Max Dunbar, with colours by Ander Zarate, is on par with the previous issue's efforts - even though some expressions, Colton especially, sometimes suffer from bizarre angles - and there is one particularly well-executed sequence that highlights really well one of the major themes running through the event, and which we've touched in previous reviews too.

Image
Spot the parallel

The coda story, on the other hand, brings veteran James Raiz together with David Garcia Cruz - and oh my, do they deliver on something which doesn't really need that much of an introduction, but still do it beautifully. The script only acts as voice-over for this tiny scene, but the payoff is big indeed.

Image
Just.. gorgeous

Tom B. Long handles the lettering throughout the book magnificently, with the positioning of the script and effects making sure points are heard and jokes land, and in a long action sequence that is never to be underestimated. All the cover variants can be seen, with credit, in our Comics Database, plus you can enjoy the one by Alex Ronald as thumbnail for this piece, too.

Thoughts
Spoilerish ahead

There have been flaws in this event, from editorial (typos included, especially when it comes to Kreiger's name) and company perspectives, that I feel have held back a lot of what the writing team could've done having seen their previous efforts. As I mentioned above, what they were able to do was good in the limits of what they could do, and it's a shame that some of the repercussions were a bizarre, sudden introduction to the next chapter in the IDWverse as this book shows...

Image
Introducing: Brian Goldner

The book was able to keep together a fairly big cast of assorted properties, and I was glad to see some of them sidelined to allow for the main story to be told. I really appreciated the parallels between Colton and Optimus Prime, and both of their failings are something I'd like to see revisited soon. And while I am intrigued by the beginnings of the next two major players, the blight of these books (like Revolutionaries, some of the tie-ins, and more before them) confirms itself to be the marketing machine: we knew who both of them were, and we knew it would happen eventually. I wanted to enjoy it much more.

This, at most, should have been a smaller Transformers/GI Joe event.

Action Man and ROM have nothing to do with what's going on, and the involvement of MASK and Micronauts is so minuscule as to be laughable. There was no reason to make this a big 'all-involved' event like Revolution.

That's the only coherent thought I can get about this right now, but in general I can't say I was a fan. I was a bigger supporter of the shared Hasbroverse but it's getting harder and harder to be optimistic about it each week.

A quick glance at Amazon shows it's out on Comixology, but maybe once you get in to the app it isn't?

As far as the issue itself, I can't put my full thoughts down yet because spoilers. I will say that the first 20 pages was complete "meh, s'ok" with one moment so hilariously cheesy, vapid, and overdone that I felt secondhand embarrassment for the creative team, as they were probably told to put it in there. I just imagine the writers laughing while a Suit says "We demand to be taken seriously!"

The last four pages though? <3

I just....I don't get it. Why does the GI Joe books look this way? I'm sorry, I'm not usually critical of artist teams because I personally know what goes into drawing comics and stuff, but come on. If this is the Crown Jewel of the Hasbro Universe, they have GOT to get their top talent on this book instead of it looking like a high school kid is getting his first opportunity here. There's no reason this should look this amateurish.

GI Joe and MASK are a two-part story, like Rom and Micronauts. The cast is the same for both parts, and features the two titles involved!

Warning - The entirety of this story contains spoilers for First Strike.

This month saw the end of the Hasbro and IDW Publishing controlled crossover event First Strike, which pitted against each other every franchise part of the current Hasbro Universe - GI Joe, Transformers, Rom, Micronauts, MASK - and revealed in-story two new directions for the IDWverse hereafter: Unicron and Visionaries. We knew they were both coming, of course, given previous material about them both (see here and here), but now IGN also brings us an interview with editor David Hedgecock on the new status quo and the series springing from First Strike's aftermath: Transformers vs Visionaries, Scarlett's Strike Force, Rom & The Micronauts.

Noteworthy: some of the material covered in the interview, which you can read in full here, was already hinted at and talked around with the Twincast podcast episode 170, which you can find here. Go back and listen, then find some relevant snippets below!

IGN: Unicron is a character who’s been off the table for a pretty long time now, much to the chagrin of his fans. What made now the right time to finally put Unicron back into play? Did Unicron’s “appearance” in Transformers: The Last Knight play a role in that decision?

Hedgecock: We’ve talked about Unicron for a few years now. Its taken that long to get all the players and storylines onto the table in a way that made sense to use him. We’re (almost) there now, and I’m freaking out!

Unicron’s appearance in the movie is entirely unrelated. We knew he was coming in the comics long before we knew anything about the movie. However, there is always synergy with Hasbro’s strategic vision for the Transformers brand.

[...]

IGN: Unicron’s arrival obviously wasn't the only big development in First Strike #6. How will the fallout of this crossover impact the line going forward? What can readers expect from the new wave of Hasbro shared universe comic books?

Hedgecock: FIRST STRIKE was our chance to really explore what it meant for all these different properties to inhabit the same universe. Coming out of the event, the titles are all going to focus on their own stories for a while. The TRANSFORMERS titles in particular are going to focus on just TRANSFORMERS characters for a good, long time.

While we’ve created some interesting mash-ups for the new season of stories, those mash-ups in and of themselves are enough. In 2018, each book will be separate and distinct, and we won’t see much crossover.

Thank god.

I agree with this. However it's kind of ironic that Unicron is a big enough threat for the entire Hasbroverse, yet they wont be involved  . Honestly that's fine though. I have not read all of First Strike yet (I have to get #5 and #6 and a few of the crossovers). I hope that Unicron is his own planet, and not Earth.....

Anyone else think unicron has been hiding out as Antilla? He clearly had an ecosystem before he woke up and shattered his outer shell as you can se trees. And as he's hungry, first port of call i to eat lv117 with a time displaced optinus on it.

This isn't IDW continuity based, at least not purely, but the SDCC Titan Force box insert might support this very subtly. Look where Unicron's facing:

ok so I finally got all caught up except for the last crossover (Transfornmer First Strike) which comes out next week.)

I could be completely off because I don't really get some of these stories, but it seemed to me that Unicron was actually Prysmos...??

Unicron is near a Black Hole. You can see it in the panel where the message reaches him (fair enough you haven't read First Strike yet). Antilla is floating around a Black Hole in IDW. If anything, I would say Unicron was the cause of Prysmos destruction before he went to slumber.

I just wanna see an issue of Unicron eating LV-117 and a time hoping Optimus. He was jumping around in RID #10 and went to a future where the planet was being sucked up and Jhiaxus saying you don’t know true chaos. That story never plot never really came back and what happened to LV-117 wasn’t relevant to dark Cybertron. That’s gotta come back.
