The Cruel Cy-Kill Begins A Seibertron.com Review of IDW Go-Bots #1
Synopsis
Go-Bots have changed our way of life. Leader-1 is a self-aware fighter jet on a hostage rescue mission with his partner, Commander Nick Burns. Scooter is the personal transport and best friend to undergrad A.J. Foster. Turbo is Matt Hunter's transforming race car in the hottest sport in America, Go-Bot Racing. Cy-Kill is the champion of the illegal, underground Go-Bot Fighting League. A sophisticated sci-fi epic from the visionary creator that brought you Transformers vs. G.I. JOE. They say they're here to help us, but are they here to replace us?
They see me rollin'
I will be up front and honest with all of you right now: I know practically nothing of Go-Bots. This is an entirely new experience for me with characters I know absolutely nothing about. If this comic series is not true to the Go-Bots lore, I don't know it. This is my introduction to the world of Go-Bots, so lets see how the premiere issue turned out.
I didn't know what to expect from the series. Tom Scioli did some fantastic stuff with Transformers vs. G.I. Joe, albeit some very strange and unique stuff. So coming into a series about Go-Bots, and basically reinventing the franchise, there were a lot of different ways this could play out, good and bad.
And having read issue 1, I can say with a fair amount of confidence that Scioli really seems to have hit something good.
Do your thing Leader-1
The issue itself was not lacking in character introductions that flowed well and action outlining this world of Go-Bots that will last for 5 issues. We start right off with action missions starring Leader-1, Go-Bot world building with Scooter that also provides us some necessary background, a pretty cool introduction to Turbo (who became a favorite of mine in the course of this issue), and a totally metal introduction to Cy-Kill, who certainly lives up to his name and reputation.
A short little history lesson!
The Go-Bots world is built up so fast in just 1 issue, and not in a rushed way. It flows, it feels natural, it gives someone like me who knows nothing of the franchise some background into this strange world. We get to see the line between partners and superiors/inferiors, and how it sets up the big conflict the story is set to tell. Cy-Kill is awesome too, I loved his intro and his characterization so far.
METAL (in context)
As was the case with TF vs G.I. Joe, Scioli does his own art and lettering, and he keeps up the same art styles that he did with the previous series. And it works really well with the Go-Bots universe. The art has an old-fashioned look to it that really lends itself to packing in action in each page with some pretty spectacular coloring. The scenes that are from Leader-1's view are really cool to see, and the human characters are drawn pretty well too. I appreciate how plain yet still so full the art on the pages can be. And the opening introduction to Cy-Kill was masterfully done as well. Everything about that section of the book was amazing.
This too is awesome in context
So for an introduction to the Go-Bots, this series was pretty spectacular. The writing was pretty tight and packed with information that doesn't feel rushed in any particular way and gives a lot of necessary information to understand this Go-Bot land. The writing of the characters was convincing and the Go-Bots themselves were pretty fun in their varying personalities. The art was a pretty neat retro style that made me feel like I was reading an 80's era comic and enjoying it for the fun that it is meant to be.
So good job to Tom Scioli, you gave us a great introduction, and I'm really looking forward to what you have to give us next.

There are a lot of corporate deals happening and many involve our beloved Transformers. We were sent a press release from Hasbro regarding an international distribution deal with Cartoon Network for Transformers: Cyberverse. Transformers: Cyberverse will be coming to Europe, Middle East, Africa and Latin America in late 2018. You can read the press release below.
In other deal news we have a pretty big one with confirmation that Paramount has partnered with Netflix to for a multi picture film deal. There are not a lot of details, but the article from the Observer states the following:
While no specific properties were mentioned on the call, the deal would seem to provide Netflix with access to valuable IP such as Transformers, Star Trek, Cloverfield and more.
This is because Paramount does own the license for Transformers films and if anyone is curious about what that entails legally, we unearthed Viacom's legal agreement/ownerhip details. You can click here to see it.
Hasbro Studios Announces International Distribution Deal with Cartoon Network for Transformers: Cyberverse
Transformers: Cyberverse to Roll Out to Europe, Middle East, Africa and Latin America Late 2018
Burbank, CA, November 20, 2018 - Hasbro Studios, the Los Angeles-based entertainment distribution division of Hasbro, Inc. (NASDAQ: HAS), announced today an international deal with Cartoon Network to distribute Season One of the hit animated series “Transformers: Cyberverse” to Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America. The deal includes both linear and digital distribution to bring the show, which is already a hit on Cartoon Network in the U.S., to the rest of the world.
“We’re very excited to continue to grow our relationship with Cartoon Network,” said Finn Arnesen,
SVP Global Distribution & Development at Hasbro Studios. “They’re the perfect partner to bring ‘Transformers: Cyberverse’ to an international audience and allow fans around the world to enjoy a new Transformers saga that’s truly More Than Meets the Eye.”
In “Transformers: Cyberverse” Bumblebee is on a critical mission where lives are at stake. Only, he can’t remember what it is. It’s a good thing his best friend Windblade has found him to help repair his damaged memory chips. With each recovered memory, Bumblebee rediscovers his past adventures on Cybertron before coming to Earth. He relives fun moments when he played Cybertronian sports with his friends, and even tragic ones that would change his life. His past will shape him into becoming the hero we know today. As each memory is repaired, another clue comes to light that will lead them both to complete their shared mission to save their friends and Earth… however, the Decepticons are hot on their heels and time is running out.

FAO Schwartz, the iconic American toy store which has been rescued from it's parent company, Toys R Us, re opened it's classic New York City store. The ginormous toy shop features rocket ships, giant teddy bears, the infamous giant piano, and a large Optimus Prime! The statue reaches almost 2 stories tall, features lights and movement, and is the corner stone of FAO Schwartz's new Transformers section. The TF section currently has an obvious focus on the Bumblebee movie, but that is sure to change with the coming and going of the different toy lines.
Optimus also features voice lines, recorded by our very own Seibertronian voice actor supreme, Jon Bailey!!

While Transformers Power of the Primes winds down, and the holiday shopping season ramps up, there may be one more opportunity to find some of those elusive late wave Power of the Primes toys. While out on the prowl, our own Site Moderator Cobotron stumbled across wave 4 PotP deluxes and and Wave 3 Prime Masters at his local Family Dollar in Omaha, NE. Keep in mind the only new deluxe in wave 4 is Novastar with repacks of Blackwing, Slug and Ripeprsnapper. Deluxes were $17 and Prime Masters were $6. While the end of the line releases are notoriously spotty for any given Transformers toy line, add Family Dollar as one more outlet to try your luck and complete the line.

So far, Hasbro was the only company to release extra exclusives as part of the Studio Series line, which is why the numbering got derailed. They released Thundercracker and a slew of exclusive Bumblebee toys, while Takara simply released the mainline toys. Well, the have now announced their first exclusive numbered as SS EX. As one might guess, it is a Bumblebee but not one that has been released in the US. Instead it is the Volkswagen deluxe mold done in a rusty deco. The full name is Transformers SS EX 1967 Rusty Bumblebee.
You can see an image below. It is part of the movie campaign for the Bumblebee movie's Japanese release in March. You must buy your tickets in advance at a 7 Eleven as a prerequisite for owning this figure. Another exclusive Bumblebee item linked to advanced tickets purchases is a Bumblebee Kewpie keychain. This is a Japanese doll dressed in a Bumblebee costume which may be of interest to a few members of our community who also collect these types of dolls. You can see a video below.
Going back to the Studio Series toys, we have in package images of the 5th wave of deluxes. This wave has also been labelled as Wave 1 2019 by Hasbro. It includes Clunker Bumblebee, Crankcase, Barricade, Sideswipe and WWII Bumblebee. This wave should be out January 2019 in stores.

Hasbro and Paramount are really going all out on the retro theme of the upcoming Transformers Bumblebee movie. With the Beetle alt mode, the 80s setting and even G1 rereleases sporting original packaging. Well to add to all this we have a new game based on the film available online on the official movie website for everyone to play. This game is made to look like 16 bit games of the past (like the SNES era) and is high score based, you can check my high score below. The idea is that you cannot run low on power and thus you must collect energon cubes, or oil while avoiding obstacles. There is a boss fight at every 5 levels where you will encounter Dropkick or Shatter and they will use both their alt modes.
Give the game a shot and let us know what you think!

Most G1 reissues this year from Hasbro were toys that had been reissued before, that is why a big novelty factor this time around was the packaging. This was the best way to get a min G1 toy in a sealed G1 box without spending a fortune. Many collectors were purchasing these to keep in the box as a show piece. So it was a bit dissapointing to see that Hot Rod was packaged in reverse. Luckily, Walmarts across the US are restocking the G1 reissues (already good news) and we have been getting reports that the Hot Rods being restocked come packaged the right way. You may have already seen that in your local store but we wanted to let everyone know just in case you had been waiting to pick it up or exchange/return your upside down one.
The particular sighting shown below is from the Chicago area, more specifically Rolling Meadows, Il. Also, for those who want to buy him online, it is available at Walmart.com at the reduced price of $26.97.
